Matthew 14:13–21 [Feeding of the five thousand.]
Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” And he said, “Bring them here to me.” Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

14:13 イエスはこれを聞くと、舟に乗ってそこを去り、ひとり人里離れた所に退かれた。しかし、群衆はそのことを聞き、方々の町から歩いて後を追った。14:14 イエスは舟から上がり、大勢の群衆を見て深く憐れみ、その中の病人をいやされた。14:15 夕暮れになったので、弟子たちがイエスのそばに来て言った。「ここは人里離れた所で、もう時間もたちました。群衆を解散させてください。そうすれば、自分で村へ食べ物を買いに行くでしょう。」14:16 イエスは言われた。「行かせることはない。あなたがたが彼らに食べる物を与えなさい。」14:17 弟子たちは言った。「ここにはパン五つと魚二匹しかありません。」14:18 イエスは、「それをここに持って来なさい」と言い、14:19 群衆には草の上に座るようにお命じになった。そして、五つのパンと二匹の魚を取り、天を仰いで賛美の祈りを唱え、パンを裂いて弟子たちにお渡しになった。弟子たちはそのパンを群衆に与えた。14:20 すべての人が食べて満腹した。そして、残ったパンの屑を集めると、十二の籠いっぱいになった。14:21 食べた人は、女と子供を別にして、男が五千人ほどであった。
From only five loaves of bread and two fish, Jesus fed a crowd of 5000 men plus women and children: maybe 5000 families. たったの五つのパンと二匹の魚から、イエス様は女と子供を別にして、男が五千人ほど食べさせました。５千人の家族でしょうか。 There are two things to see here: the compassion of Jesus and the power of Jesus. ここで、二つの事を見ましょう。一つはイエス様の憐れみともう一つはイエス様の力です。
When Jesus saw the great crowd that followed him, he had compassion on them; he healed their sick and spoke words of God’s love. ご自分の所にあるいて来た群衆を見た時、イエス様は彼らを憐れみました。その中の病人をいやしたり、神様の愛の言葉を話したりしました。 In the evening, he knew the people would be hungry and they needed to eat before taking the long walk home. 夕方になりますと、皆のお腹が空いていると知りまして、家に帰る長い道のりを歩く前に、何かを食べさせなければならないと知りました。 And so he fed them. それで、彼らを食べさせました。 Compassion is love. 憐れみとは愛です。 Compassion sees the distress and the helplessness of people. 憐れみは人の苦難や無力を見ます。 And so in this same compassion God sent Jesus to save the distressed sinners of this world who were helpless to save themselves. それで、この同じ憐れみを持って、神様はイエス様をこの世で苦難している罪人を救う為に、この無力な人間を助ける為に送りました。 As John 3:16 says, “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, so that whoever believes in him shall not parish but have everlasting life.” ヨハネ3：16が言う通りです。「神は、その独り子をお与えになったほどに、世を愛された。独り子を信じる者が一人も滅びないで、永遠の命を得るためである。」 This is this compassion that led Jesus to the cross. It is this love which forgave our sins. この憐れみはイエス様を十字架に導きました。この愛は私達の罪を赦しました。
The second thing to see is the power of Jesus. ２つ目に見たいものとは、イエス様の力です。 Now there are people who do not believe in miracles. ある人々は奇跡を信じません。 They deny this miracle and all the others. この奇跡とすべての奇跡を否定します。 But let me tell you how I think. しかし、私の考え方を教えましょう。 If God is god, then he is almighty god and can do anything. もし神様は神であるのでしたら、全能の神であるので何でも出来ます。 If Jesus is god, then he has almighty power to do anything. もしイエス様が神でしたら、何でも出来る全能の力があります。He can change water into wine, he can walk on the water, he can heal the sick, he can feed the 5000, he can take the sin of the world upon himself, he can forgive that sin, he can defeat the power of the devil, he can rise on the third day, he can return to judge the living and the dead. 水をぶどう酒に出来、水の上を歩け、病気を癒せ、５千人を食べさせ、御自分の上に世の罪を取り、悪魔の力を征服し、三日目に甦り、生ける人と死んでいる人を裁く為に再び来られる事が出来ます。 So I have no trouble with miracles. ですから、私にとっては、奇跡は問題ありません。 And when Jesus does a miracle, he does it well. 奇跡をする時、イエス様は上手にします。 There were six barrels of delicious wine at Cana, カナの結婚式の為に6つの樽ほどのぶどう酒を作りました。twelve baskets of leftovers from the five loaves and two fish, 五つのパンと二匹の魚の残ったパンの屑を集めると、十二の籠いっぱいになったのです。and unlimited forgiveness of sins for all believers. すべての信者達の為に、限りない赦しがあります。In this miracle we see the power of Jesus, and it strengthens our faith.この奇跡の中で、私達はイエス様の力を見ると、私達の信仰が力づけられます。
I want to look at another time when Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it and distributed it. もう一つの時も、イエス様はパンを取って、祝福して、それを裂いて、人に与えました。 This is what Jesus did at the Last Supper. 最後の晩餐です。 He did not give it to 5000 people, and not only to the twelve disciples, but to millions and millions of believers throughout the ages. それを与えたのは、５千人にではなくて、１２人の弟子達だけにではなくて、その後の代々の数え切れない多くの信者達に与えました。 This is indeed a miracle that exceeds the feeding of the 5000. この中で、五千人を食べさせた奇跡より偉大なる奇跡を見ます。 Again we see here the compassion of Jesus and the power of Jesus. ここにも、イエス様の憐れみと力を見る事が出来ます。
The Words of Institution
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: “Take and eat; this is my body given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
設定のことば
私達の主イエス･キリストは くるしみを受ける前日、パンを取り、感謝し、これを裂き、弟子達に 与て言われました。「取って食べなさい。これはあなたがたのために与える私のからだ である。私の記念のため、これを行ないなさい」。
食事ののち、杯をも同じようにして言われました。「取って飲みなさい。これは 罪の赦しのため、あなたがたと多くの人々のために流す 私の血における 新しい契約である。私の記念のため、これを行ないなさい」。
We see the compassion of Jesus in the words, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.” イエス様の憐れみがこの言葉の中にあります、「これは 罪の赦しのため、あなたがたと多くの人々のために流す 私の血における 新しい契約である。」 This is the Gospel. これは福音です。 God is making a new covenant, a “New Testament” with us. 神様は新しい契約、新約を私達と結びます。 With love and compassion for us sinners, God sent his Son to die on the cross as a sacrifice to forgive our sins. 私達罪人の為に愛と憐れみを持って、神様は御自分の独り子を、私達の罪を赦す為に、犠牲として十字架上で死ぬように送りました。 Christ gave his body over to death and his blood was shed under the whip and on the cross, for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. キリストは御自分のからだを死に渡しました。彼の尊い血が鞭打たれたとき、十字架上にも流れました。それは、あなたとすべての人々の罪の赦す為でした。 When we take it and eat and drink it, we do it for the remembrance of Jesus. それを取って、食べて、飲む時、キリストの記念の為にします。This does not mean that we simply remember the historical Bible story. 記念とは聖書の歴史の物語をただ思い出す事ではありません。It means that we remember the meaning and the purpose and benefit of Christ’s death. キリストの死の意味と目的と利益をも覚えます。 To remember Christ and to receive the sacrament means that in faith we confess our sin and rejoice in forgiveness and salvation. キリストを記念するのは、信仰を持ってその聖餐式を戴くのは、信仰を持って、自分の罪を告白して、赦しと救いをお祝いする事です。
Remembrance is not just thinking about history. 記念する事は、ただ歴史を考える事だけではありません。 Let me give a couple of examples that this congregation might understand. この教会の人々が分かると思う例を挙げたいと思います。 When a Marine remembers Iojima, it is a rededication of service to the Corps. 海兵隊の人が硫黄島を覚える時、自分自身を海兵隊で働くように再び献身します。 When a Japanese visits Hiroshima or the Okinawa Peace Park, it is a rededication to pray for world peace. 日本人が広島や沖縄の平和祈念公園に行く時、自分自身も世界平和の為に祈る人になるように献身します。 When we Christians remember the death and resurrection of Jesus, it is a rededication to the covenant of God’s Grace and our gratitude. 私達クリスチャンがイエス様の死と復活を記念する時、自分自身を神様の恵み深い契約と、私達の感謝の人生に献身します。 [That is why only baptized believers receive the sacrament, because it is a proclamation of our faith, and a proclamation of God’s love and compassion to us.] [ですから、洗礼を受けた信者達だけがこの聖礼典を戴きます。私達の信仰の告白でし、神様の愛と憐れみの証しだからです。]
Also in the Lord’s Supper we see the power of Jesus. 又、主の晩餐の中では、イエス様の力を見ます。 Jesus said, “This is my Body” and “This is my Blood.” イエス様は言われました、「これは私の体である」と「これは私の血である」と。 In this we see a miracle greater than the feeding of 5000. この中で、五千人を食べさせた奇跡より偉大なる奇跡を見ます。 In the Sacrament, Jesus gives us his real body and blood. この礼典に於いて、イエス様は御自分の誠の体と血を私達に与えます。 This miracle is different than changing water into wine or feeding 5000 with only 5 loaves of bread. この奇跡は、水をぶどう酒に変える事やたったの５つのパンで五千人を食べさせる事と違います。 In those miracles people could see with their eyes and taste with their tongues the result of the miracles. その奇跡の場合には、人々はその奇跡の結果を自分の目で見たり、自分の舌で味を見る事が出来ました。 In the Sacrament of the Altar, we see and taste bread and wine, we do not see or taste the flesh and blood of Christ. しかし、聖餐式の場合には、私達はそのぶどう酒とそのパンを見たりしますが、キリストの肉や血を見たり、味をみたりしません。 But does that mean that it is not there? それでは、それがそこにない訳ですか？
But let me tell you how I think. 私の考え方を話しましょう。 If God is god, then he is almighty god and can do anything. もし神様は神でしたら、全能の神であるので、何でもかんでもお出来になります。 If Jesus is god, then he has almighty power to do anything. もしイエス様が神でしたら、何でも出来る全能の力があります。 Can Jesus become bread and wine? イエス様はパンとぶどう酒になる事が出来ますか？ Can the Holy Spirit become a dove or wind or flame as on Pentecost? 聖霊は鳩やペンテコステに風や炎になる事が出来ますか？ Can the Son of God be born a Baby in Bethlehem? 神の子がベツレヘムの赤ちゃんとして産まれる事が出来ますか？ Can God die on the cross? 神様は十字架上で死ぬ事が出来ますか？ When people looked at Jesus of Nazareth, they did not see Jesus as God. 人々がナザレのイエス様を見た時、神様のように見ませんでした。 Yet Jesus of Nazareth was God. しかし、ナザレのイエス様は神でした。 That is the miracle of the Incarnation, the miracle of God becoming human flesh and blood. それは、人間になる奇跡、人間の肉と血になる神様の奇跡です。 Jesus became one of us, in order to redeem us, to save us. 私達を救う為に、私達を贖う為に、イエス様は私達のようになりました。 And so when it comes to the Lord’s Supper, Jesus comes to us in a wonderful way. それで、聖餐式の場合、イエス様は素晴らしい方法で私達に来られます。 Just as bread nourishes our bodies, so Christ nourishes our souls. パンが私達の体を養いますように、キリストが私達の魂を養います。 It reminds us that Christ is not far removed from us in heaven somewhere, rather he is with us in a way that is very intimate, personal, tangible, touchable, tasteable. キリストが私達からはるかに、天国のどこに離れている事ではなくて、私達と共にいます。とっても親しい、触る事が出来、味を見る事が出来る程近いです。
Human minds cannot fully understand miracles without faith. 人間の思いは、信仰無しに奇跡を理解する事が出来ません。 But with faith, it is easy to accept miracles, しかし、信仰があれば、簡単に奇跡を信じる事が出来ます。because every miracle of Jesus shows his power and compassion and love. 何故ならば、すべての奇跡にイエス様は私達に御自分の力と憐れみと愛を見せて下さるのです。
