Matthew 5:1-12, The Beatitudes
マタイ５：１－１２
Today is All Saints Day. 今日は全聖徒の日です。 Some saints in the Bible have their own, special day on the church calendar, like St. Peter (June 29) or St. John (December 27). ある聖書に出てくる聖徒には、教会のカレンダーで、特別の日があります。例えば、聖ペテロ（６月２９日）や聖ヨハネ（１２月２７日）です。 In the history of the church, there have been many martyrs and evangelists and teachers who are remembered on the day of their birth or the day when they were martyred. 教会の歴史の中には、多くの殉教者、伝道者、宣教師、教師などがいます、そして、その誕生日や殉教者として死んだ日が記念されています。 One such famous saint is St. Patrick who preached the Gospel in Ireland (March 17). 有名な聖徒の一人は聖パトリックです。彼はアイランドで福音を述べ伝えました（３月１７日）。 We remember these people as special models for our faith life. この人々を覚えるのは、彼らは私達の信仰の生き方の模範になるからです。 They give us courage to preach the Gospel even under persecution. 迫害があっても、福音を述べ伝える勇気を与えます。 They give us strength for our daily life. 私達の毎日の生活に力を与えます。 But there have been many, many great Christians who are not famous, many who are unknown or not remembered. しかし、有名ではないし、又知られていない、また 忘れられた 多くの素晴らしいクリスチャンもいます。 All Saints Day gives us an opportunity to thank God for them.全聖徒の日にはその人の為に、神様に感謝する機会です。
And today we remember not only the famous saints, but we also remember those saints who are special to us personally. 又、今日、有名な聖徒を覚えながら、私達が個人的に大切にする聖徒をも覚えます。 We remember our parents, grandparents, teachers, friends, or other people who have influenced our Christian lives. その人は私たちの両親、親戚、教師、又自分のクリスチャンの人生に影響を与えた人です。 That is why we have a special memorial prayer today in our worship service. ですから今日の礼拝には、特別昇天者のための記念の祈りがあります。
What is a “saint”? 「聖徒」とは何でしょうか。 The word “saint” means “a holy person.” 「聖徒」と言う言葉の意味とは、「聖なる人」です。 But what makes a person “holy”? しかし、人を「聖」にするのは何でしょうか。 “Holy” can mean “pure” and “without sin.” 「聖なる事」には、「清い」や「罪が無い」との意味もあります。 But the saints were not holy because they lived sinless lives, rather they were forgiven by the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. しかし、聖徒達が聖になったのは、罪が無い人生を送ったからではなくて、十字架上のイエス様の犠牲によって赦されていた人達です。 None were completely sinless because they lived in this world of temptation and sin. その人々が完全に罪が無いのは、この罪深く、誘惑の多い世に住んでいたからです。
Or are the saints holy because they are the people of today’s Gospel reading, Matthew 5:1-12? 又は、その人が聖なる人になったのは、彼らが今日の福音書、マタイ５章の人々だったからでしょうか。 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, the mournful, meek, hungry and thirsty for righteousness, merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers, and persecuted.” 「幸いである者は、心の貧しい人、悲しむ人、柔和の人、義に飢え乾く人、憐れみ深い人、心の清い人、平和を実現する人、迫害された人です。」 Sometimes, yes. ある時はその通りです。 And they can be models so that we can learn to be like them, even if being like that means that we will be persecuted. そして、彼らは私達の為の模範で、私達が彼らと同じようになる事が出来ます、迫害があってもです。 But they are not holy because they are like that. しかし、その人々がそのような人だったから聖なる者ではありません。 Their character does not make them holy. 彼らの性格によって聖なるものになった訳ではありません。 They live that life style because they were first holy.彼らにそのような生き方があったのは、先ず、自分が聖であるからです。
Today I want to define the word “holy” in this way: 今日、「聖」と言う言葉をこのように定義しようと思います： to be holy is to be connected with God who is holy. 聖なる事とは、聖なる神様に属している事です。 For example: I have two books. 例えば、私には２冊の本があります。 This book is an ordinary novel. 一冊は普通の小説です。 This book is the Holy Bible. もう一冊は聖書です。 It is holy because it is the Word of God. 聖なる書物であるのは、神様の御言葉であるからです。 It is God’s book, therefore it is holy. 神様の本であるので聖です。 Baptism water is holy. 洗礼の水は聖です。 It is different than ordinary drinking water because it is connected with God’s word and God’s promise, 普通の飲み水と違うのは、神様の御言葉と神様の約束に属しているからです。 The promise is Mark 16:16, “whoever believes and is baptized will be saved.” その約束とは、マルコ16:16 です。「信じて洗礼を受ける者は救われる」と。 Holy Communion is holy because it is body and blood of Christ; therefore it is different than regular sandwich bread. 聖餐式が聖であるのは、キリストの体と血であるからです；ですから普通の食パンと違います。These things are connected with God who is holy. この物は聖なる神様と結ばれています。
What makes a person holy is that that person is connected with God. 人を聖にするのは、その人が神様とつながれているからです。 The grace and love of God sent Jesus to this world. 神様の恵みと愛によって、イエス様がこの地上に送られていました。 Christ became a person, born, suffered, died, buried and arisen. キリストは人間になって、産まれて、苦しんで、死んで、葬られて、復活しました。 Christ connected himself with us. キリストは御自分を私達とつなぎました。 That means forgiveness, life and salvation. それで、赦しと命と救いがあります。 Forgiveness means that we are not broken off from or separated from God. 赦しとは、私達を神様から遠く離すものが無い事です。 We are connected, and that is what makes us holy.神様と結ばれている事があるので、私達は聖です。
In Holy Baptism we are connected with God, and that makes us holy. 聖なるバプテスマによって、私達は神様に属しているので、洗礼によって、私達を聖なる者になります。 In the Holy Communion, Christ renews his covenant promise and we are made holy through his holy body and blood. 聖餐式の時、キリストは御自分の契約の約束を再び結びますので、私達は彼の聖なる体と血によって聖になります。 We are holy. 私達は聖です。 We are saints.私達は聖徒です。
Now officially, even though we are saints of God, today’s celebration of All Saints Day is not about us who are still alive. 私達が神様の聖徒ですが、正式に言うと、今日の全聖徒の日のお祝いは、まだ生きている私達の為ではありません。 Yet we join with the whole church of all places and all time to praise God whose praises are eternal and infinite.しかし、私達は どこでもいつでも あるすべての教会と共に神様を誉めたたえます。神様の誉れは永遠です。
