Ash Wednesday is a rather dirty worship service. 聖灰水曜日はちょっと汚い礼拝です。 We use ashes. 灰を使うからです。 We smudge them on our foreheads. その灰で額(ひたい)を汚すからです。 We get our fingers dirty applying the ashes. 灰をつけると手も汚します。 It is hard to make a nice looking cross with my thumb. 親指で奇麗な十字架を作る事が難しいです。
I tried to think of a cleaner, better way to do it. それで、もっと奇麗な方法がありませんかと思いました。I had a couple of ideas.幾つかのアイディアがありました。
1. How about using a felt marking pen?１．マジックマーカーはどうでしょうか。It would be a nice, clear design. はっきり、書きやすいデザインが出来るでしょう。My fingers would not get dirty.そして、私の手が汚されないでしょう。It would not rub off when you put on your hat or scratch your head.そして、帽子をかぶったり、頭をかく時に、消されないでしょう。All day long people who see you would know you were a Christian.一日中、あなたを見る人々はあなたがキリスト信者であるとすぐ分かるでしょう。 And that is the problem. しかし、それこそは問題です。In the passage following today’s Gospel reading, Jesus said that when we fast, that is when we go about living out our religious faith, we should not be obvious.今日の福音書の次の箇所に、イエス様が言われたのは、私達の宗教的な信仰を活かす時、自分が信者である事が目立ってはいけません。 He said, “When you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen, and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” 言われました、「6:17 あなたは、断食するとき、頭に油をつけ、顔を洗いなさい。6:18 それは、あなたの断食が人に気づかれず、隠れたところにおられるあなたの父に見ていただくためである。そうすれば、隠れたことを見ておられるあなたの父が報いてくださる。」
2. So, my second idea is dead on arrival. ２．それで、私の２つ目のアイディアが良くないとすぐ分かりました。 How about a tattoo on your forehead? それは額に入れ墨をすることです。 Some groups tell their members how to dress, how to cut – or not to cut – their hair, and other outward appearances. ある団体はメンバーに、どのような洋服を着るか、どのように髪の毛を切るか、など外面的な事を教えます。 But Jesus says our religion is a thing of the heart. しかし、イエス様は私達の宗教は心のものだと言われます。 But of course, our behavior should tell everyone that we have Jesus in our heart. 勿論、私達の振る舞いによって、皆さんにイエス様が私達の心の中にあると教えるでしょう。 We do not have to have our faith permanently written on our forehead.それで私達の信仰を、額に消す事が出来ないマークで付けなくても良いです
3. I did not want to get my hands dirty, so I thought about the felt pen. ３．自分の手を汚さないように、マジックマーカーを使いたいと思いました。 But how about applying the ashes with a paint brush? しかし、灰を筆で付けたら、どうでしょうか。 Japanese brush writing uses ink that is made from soot, which is why it is black. 日本の書道(しょどう)が遣っている墨汁のインクは、墨から作られたものです。それで真っ黒です。 I have studied Japanese calligraphy, so I could do it very nicely. 私は日本の書道を勉強したので、奇麗に書けるはずです。 But then I realized that the cross of Jesus is not pretty. しかし考えてみると、イエス様の十字架は奇麗な物ではありません。 It was an ugly wooden thing. 汚い木で出来た物です。
And then I realized that the reason for using ash on Ash Wednesday is because it is dirty. 灰水曜日で灰を使う理由とは、灰が汚いからです。 Ash is a symbol of death. 灰は死のシンボルです。 A tree is burned. 木が燃やされます。 A body is cremated. 死体も燃やされます。 Evidence of life is destroyed. 生命がもうぜんぜんないと言う証拠(しょうこ)です。 In the funeral ceremony we say, “Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.” お葬式の時言います。「灰から灰へ、塵から塵へ」と。 On Good Friday we realize that our sin is the cause of Jesus dying on the cross. 聖金曜日で分かるのは、私達の罪がイエス様の死の原因です。 Sin is the cause of all the problems of the world. 罪は世界のすべての問題の原因です。 And it is also the cause of our death.私達の死の原因です。
When I put ashes on my forehead I realized that I am a sinner. 自分の額に灰をつけると、自分が罪人であると分かります。 I realized that I will die. 自分が死ぬと分かります。 I realize that my sin is dirty and ugly.自分の罪が汚い、醜いものであると分かります。
But the ashes on our foreheads are not permanent ink or a tattoo. しかし、私達の額に有る灰は、マジックマーカーや入れ墨ではありません。 We will go home tonight and wash our faces and remove the smudge. 礼拝後 家に帰りますと、顔を洗って、その汚れを洗い落とします。 It is like baptism. それは、洗礼のようです。 Our sin is washed away and forgiven.私達の罪が赦されて、洗い流されています。
Of course for Jesus to remove our sin he had to die on the cross. 勿論、私達の罪を私達から取る為に、イエス様が十字架上で死ななければなりませんでした。 It was not as simple as washing with soap and water. ただの水と石けんで洗うような、簡単なものではありませんでした。 That is what we want to remember this Lent. 今年の受難節でそれを覚えましょう。 We want to remember how hard it was for Jesus to forgive us –私達を赦すために、イエス様の為にどんなに難しかったか覚えましょう。―― the suffering, イエス様の苦しみ、the pain, 痛み、 the loneliness, 淋しさ、the desertion, 捨てられた事、the mocking, 侮辱、the whipping, 鞭打ち、 and the dying. 死。 His forehead was marked by the crown of thorns. イエス様の額には、茨の冠の傷跡がありました。 His hands and feet were marked by the nails. 手と足の釘後がありました。 His side was marked by the spear. 又脇腹にも槍の傷跡もありました。 In this we see the mark of love. このようにして、私達は愛のしるしを見ます。 It is love that cannot be washed off with water, rather the water of baptism makes a permanent mark on our hearts, on our souls.その愛が水で洗い流す事が出来ません。かえって、洗礼の水は私達の心と魂に、消す事が出来ないマークを付けます。
So, we have our dirty smudges. それで、私達の額にきたいない汚れがあります。 Thereby we remember who we are, and we remember our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.それで、自分がどのものか覚え、又、私達の救い主イエス・キリストもどのものかを覚えます。
