Luke 2:13~14
13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”

13 すると、突然、この天使に天の大軍が加わり、神を賛美して言った。
14 「いと高きところには栄光、神にあれ、／地には平和、御心に適う人にあれ。」
Merry Christmas! メリークリスマス！ It is a “merry” Christmas because God in Heaven is glorious and he is happy to give peace to people on Earth. クリスマスが“メリー”であるのは、天にいる神様には栄光があり、そして神様が喜んでいて、地上にいる人々に、平和を下さるからです。 Tonight I want to look at two words in the song of the Angels: the word “glory” and the word “peace.” 今晩、天使の歌の二つの言葉を見たいと思います：即ち、「栄光」と「平和」と言う言葉です。
Glory is about something that is really good, when something wonderful has been accomplished. 栄光とは、素晴らしい事に対して、素晴らしい事が起こった時です。 The wonderful thing that has happened on Christmas is that God’s Son has been born on this earth. クリスマスに起こった素晴らしい事とは、神様の御子がこの地上に生まれた事です。 That is a wonderful thing because it means salvation. それが素晴らしいのは、救いがあるからです。 It means the forgiveness of sin. 罪の赦しがあるからです。 It is a wonderful thing because in Christ we all are reborn to be sons and daughters of God our Heavenly Father.素晴らしいのは、私達皆がキリストによって、天の父なる神様の息子と娘として生まれ変わるからです。
When a child is born, we usually say to the parents, “Congratulations.” 子供が生まれる時、両親に「おめでとう・ございます」と普通に言います。 And I think that in this Bible passage, that would be a good translation. “Congratulations to God in the highest.” それで、この聖書の箇所の良い翻訳はそれでしょう。即ち、「いと高きところには『おめでとう』、神にあれ、」と。 Or perhaps we could say, “Hallelujah, 又、別の言葉で言えます、「ハレルヤ、 Amen, アーメン、 Hosanna, ホサナ、 Praise, 賛美、 Thank You, ありがとう、 Joy, 喜び、 Banzai, 万歳、 Hip-hip-hurray!”イエ―。」 What are the best human words to express the love and grace and mercy of God? 神様の愛、恵み、と憐れみを表わす一番良い人間の言葉は何でしょうか。 Hymn composers and sermon writers and Christmas card designers all try their hardest to make meaningful to us the word “glory” as sung by the Angels. 讃美歌を書く人、説教を話す人、クリスマス・カードをデザインする人達は皆、一所懸命に、天使の歌った「栄光」と言う言葉を意味深く表わすように頑張ります。 The “Glory” of God is an infinitely big thing, and we shall be singing it for the rest of eternity! 神様の「栄光」が無限のことであるので、私達はそれを永遠に歌うでしょう！
But the really hard word to understand in the song of the Angels is the word “peace.” しかし天使の歌の中で、本当に分かりにくい言葉とは「平和」です。 Perhaps it is hard because it seems that there is no “peace on earth.” この地上には平和がないみたいだからでしょう。 Did the Angels mean something different? 天使が違う事を意味したのでしょうか。 Is this peace something only of our hearts and minds, but not the end of war and strife between people and nations? 又、この平和が私達の心と思いだけにある平和で、人間の間や国と国の間の戦争と争いが終わる事を意味しない事でしょうか。 Is it only a promise for the future? 又、将来の事への約束でしょうか。 Is it only the prayer that we shout from our hearts? 心から叫ぶ祈りだけでしょうか。 Is Christmas peace real?クリスマスの平和が本当の物でしょうか。
Real peace must come from God. 誠の平和は神様から来ます。 Human history shows that humans cannot create peace, but only war and arguments. 人間の歴史を見ると、人間は戦争と喧嘩を作りますが、平和を造る事が出来ません。 Humans have not found a cure to all diseases and worries. 人間はすべての病気や心配の癒しを見付けられません。 Peace is the work of God alone.平和は神様だけの働きです。
The Christmas Angels declare that there is glory to God because he has given peace on earth. 神様は地上に平和を下さったので、神様には栄光があると天使が述べ伝えます。 And that peace comes through love. そして、この平和が愛によって来ます。 God loves us so much that he sent his Son Jesus. 御自分の御子イエス・キリストをこの世に遣わすほど、私達を愛します。 Jesus was born, lived, died and rose again in order to bring peace on earth. 地上に平和をもたらす為に、このイエス様が生まれ、生涯を送って、死んで甦りました。 In his death and resurrection, there is forgiveness. この死と復活によって、赦しがあります。 There is reconciliation. 和解があります。 Reconciliation is the making of friends between God and humanity. 和解とは、神様と人間の間に友情を造る事です。 And so we have peace with God. それで、神様との平和があります。
This peace with God is the whole basis of Christian love, charity, ethics, social and interpersonal relationships. この神様との平和は、キリスト教のすべての愛、チャリティー、道徳、又社会的な交際の基本です。 Since we have peace with God, we can have courage to try to make peace, peace with friends, and world peace. 神様との平和があるので、勇気を持って、平和を造るようにします；仲間と共にある平和を始め、世界平和もそうです。 World peace starts with peace in our hearts. 世界平和の始まりは、私達の心の中から始まります。 And that is where Christmas Peace starts and heads toward the wonderful peace and glory that the Angels sang about. それはクリスマスの平和の始まりで、天使達が歌った素晴らしい平和と栄光に至ります。 The final glory will be when Jesus returns to take us to the complete peace of heaven. 最後の栄光とは、イエス様がこの地上に戻って、完全な平和である天国に私達を連れていって下さる時です。 Our Christmas peace is filled with that joy and hope.私達のクリスマスの平和はその喜びと希望で満たされています。
True peace must begin in the hearts of faith of those people who give glory and praise to God. 本当の平和は神様に賛美と栄光をきせる人々の心にあります。 Tonight we thank God that the Christ-child has been born in our hearts. 今晩、子供のキリストが私達の心の中に生まれた事を神様に感謝します。 And so, like the Angels, we give glory to God in the highest heaven.それで、天使達と共に、「いと高きところには栄光、神にあれ、」と賛美します。
Amen.アーメン。
May the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ give you peace and joy. Amen.
どうか、イエス・キリストの栄光の福音があなたがたに平和と喜びを与えますように。アーメン。
