Clean Hands and a Pure Heart 綺麗な手と心

GOSPEL LESSON: Mark 7:1–8, 14-23
1When the Pharisees gathered to [Jesus], with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem, 2they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands, holding to the tradition of the elders, 4and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.) 5And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” 6And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,
“‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;
7 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’
8 You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”
14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15 Nothing outside a man can make him ‘unclean’ by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a man that makes him ‘unclean.’”
17 After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable. 18 “Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him ‘unclean’? 19 For it doesn’t go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out of his body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods “clean.”) 20 He went on: “What comes out of a man is what makes him ‘unclean.’ 21 For from within, out of men’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22 greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and make a man ‘unclean.’”

7:1 ファリサイ派の人々と数人の律法学者たちが、エルサレムから来て、イエスのもとに集まった。7:2 そして、イエスの弟子たちの中に汚れた手、つまり洗わない手で食事をする者がいるのを見た。7:3 ――ファリサイ派の人々をはじめユダヤ人は皆、昔の人の言い伝えを固く守って、念入りに手を洗ってからでないと食事をせず、7:4 また、市場から帰ったときには、身を清めてからでないと食事をしない。そのほか、杯、鉢、銅の器や寝台を洗うことなど、昔から受け継いで固く守っていることがたくさんある。――7:5 そこで、ファリサイ派の人々と律法学者たちが尋ねた。「なぜ、あなたの弟子たちは昔の人の言い伝えに従って歩まず、汚れた手で食事をするのですか。」 7:6 イエスは言われた。「イザヤは、あなたたちのような偽善者のことを見事に預言したものだ。彼はこう書いている。
『この民は口先ではわたしを敬うが、／その心はわたしから遠く離れている。7:7 人間の戒めを教えとしておしえ、／むなしくわたしをあがめている。』7:8 あなたたちは神の掟を捨てて、人間の言い伝えを固く守っている。」
7:14 それから、イエスは再び群衆を呼び寄せて言われた。「皆、わたしの言うことを聞いて悟りなさい。7:15 外から人の体に入るもので人を汚すことができるものは何もなく、人の中から出て来るものが、人を汚すのである。」7:16 ＊聞く耳のある者は聞きなさい。 7:17 イエスが群衆と別れて家に入られると、弟子たちはこのたとえについて尋ねた。7:18 イエスは言われた。「あなたがたも、そんなに物分かりが悪いのか。すべて外から人の体に入るものは、人を汚すことができないことが分からないのか。7:19 それは人の心の中に入るのではなく、腹の中に入り、そして外に出される。こうして、すべての食べ物は清められる。」
7:20 更に、次のように言われた。「人から出て来るものこそ、人を汚す。7:21 中から、つまり人間の心から、悪い思いが出て来るからである。みだらな行い、盗み、殺意、7:22 姦淫、貪欲、悪意、詐欺、好色、ねたみ、悪口、傲慢、無分別など、7:23 これらの悪はみな中から出て来て、人を汚すのである。」



At the time of Jesus, people did not know about germs and viruses. イエス様の時代の人々は黴菌やヴィルスの事を知りませんでした。 The Pharisees were worried not about being dirty but about being unclean. ファリサイ派の人々は手が汚(よご)れて汚(きたな)いことよりも、手が汚(けが)れている事について感心を持ちました。 They did not want to be religiously unclean. これは宗教的な汚（けが）れの事です。 At first it was a good idea. 最初これをきちんと守ることは立派な事でした。 Mark 7:4 says, and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. マルコ７：４が言います、また、市場から帰ったときには、身を清めてからでないと食事をしない。 They were not concerned about catching the flu or some disease. インフルエンザや別の病気を心配しませんでした。 The marketplace was an area where there were things more dangerous than germs! マーケット市場には、黴菌より危ないものがありました！ It was a place filled with sin. 罪の多い所でした。 There were the dishonest merchants. There were the tax collectors. There were the Jews who did not follow the dietary regulations of the Bible. There were the pagan Romans. There were various temptations to sin. There was gossip and lies. 正直ではない店の人、徴税人、聖書の食べ物に対する規定を守らないユダヤ人、異教のローマ人、色々の罪からの誘惑、噂(うわさ)や嘘(うそ)もありました。 This sinful stuff pollutes not the hands but rather the mind and the heart. このような罪深いものが心と思いを汚（けが）します。 When a person would come from the marketplace and wash their hands it was like a prayer. ですから人が市場から家に帰りますと、手を洗う事は祈りをすることのようでした。Please God, protect me from the sin I saw today, forgive me if I sinned, make me pure and holy and keep me in the true faith. Amen. どうか神様、今日わたしが見た罪から私を守って下さい。犯した罪があれば赦して下さい。私を清めて、聖なる者として、誠の信仰を守る事が出来るようにして下さい。アーメン。

In the years prior to Jesus, the Jews who returned from Exile in Babylon wanted to protect the people of Israel so that they would not be punished by God again because of their unbelief and disobedience. イエス様の生まれるずっと前に、ユダヤ人たちはバビロニアの捕囚から約束の地に帰りました。二度と神様の罰を受けないように、自分達を守りたいと思いました。 They became very strict. 厳しくなりました。 They kept the Ten Commandments and the Law of Moses, and they added many traditions not written in the Bible but added with the purpose of helping people keep the Commandments of God. 十戒や他のモーセの律法を守る為に、聖書に書いていない多くの言い伝えや習慣を作りました。それは神様の命令をよく守る為でした。 Then things became turned around. しかし、いつのまにか、ものごとが逆になりました。 The traditions and man-made laws became more important than the Ten Commandments. 言い伝えや習慣が神様の十戒より大切になりました。 They followed traditions and customs so carefully that I think maybe it was close to compulsive behavior.その習慣を守るために、厳しく守ったので、精神病の脅迫（きょうはく）された衝動(しょうどう)行動(こうどう) compulsive behavior に近くになったと思います。 And then the real meaning of the tradition became lost. その時、その言い伝えの本当の意味がなくなりました。 For example, washing hands was not longer a prayer; it was a symbol that someone kept the law. 例えば手を洗うのは、もう祈りではなくて律法を守る人のしるしになりました。 Washing hands became a sign that a person obeyed the Pharisees and their strangle hold on society. 手を洗うと、その人が社会を支配するファリサイ派の人々に従う人のしるしでした。 The Pharisees asked Jesus, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” ファリサイ派の人々はイエス様に聞きました。「なぜ、あなたの弟子たちは昔の人の言い伝えに従って歩まず、汚れた手で食事をするのですか。」 In other words, why do your disciples not follow our teachings? 言い換えますと、どうして弟子達が私達の言う事を聞かないのでしょうか。 It was no longer a matter of praying to God for forgiveness, it was a sign of obedience to the religious leaders. もう神様に願っている赦しの為の祈りではなくて、宗教の指導者に対する従順のしるしになりました。 They thought that Jesus was trying to destroy their religion by destroying their religious traditions and therefore their religious identity. 彼らが思ったのは、イエス様がそのユダヤ教の習慣を破(やぶ)って、そのユダヤ教のアイデンテティを弱くし、その宗教を破壊(はかい)すると。

Jesus called them hypocrites. イエス様は彼らを「偽善者(ぎぜんしゃ)」と呼びました。 In summary, Jesus said that washing hands was not as important as cleansing the heart. 言い換えますと、手を洗う事よりも、心を清める事の方が大切であるとイエス様は言われます。 Or, what you ate and what went into your stomach was not as important as what went into and came out of your heart. どの物を食べてお腹に入るかよりも、何が心に入ったりたり出たりする方が大切です。 It is in the heart where all sin and evil are. 心の中には、すべての罪と悪があるからです。 The heart cannot be cleansed by washing with soap and water. 水と石けんを使って心をきれいにする事が出来ません。 It can only be cleansed by the water of Baptism. ただバプテスマの水によってだけです。 It can only be cleansed by the blood of Christ who died on the cross. 十字架上で死んだキリストの血によってだけです。 It can only be cleansed by the forgiveness of sin. 罪の赦しによってだけです。 It can only be cleansed by the work of the Holy Spirit who leads us to faith. 私達を信仰に導く聖霊の働きだけによってです。

The Jew washed their hands when they returned from the marketplace, maybe we should, too. ユダヤ人が市場から帰りますと手を洗ったように、私達もそうした方が良いでしょうか。 What I mean is this. Whenever we go out of the safety of our church and homes, there are many evil things and temptations to sin all around us. と言うのは、教会や自分の家の安全な所から出かけると、私達の周りには多くの悪と多くの罪を犯させる誘惑があります。 There are constant temptations to sin: cheating, fornication, lying, greed, violence and more. 誘惑がいつもあります：人をだます事、性欲の罪、嘘つき、欲張り、暴力、等。 We need to pray for protection before we go out, and for forgiveness when we come home. 出かける前に守りの為に祈ればよいでしょう。家に帰りますと赦しを祈ります。 Or we need to pray a prayer of thanksgiving that we safely returned home. 又、安全に家に帰りますと感謝の祈りが良いでしょう。

Temptation to sin will always be with us. But the forgiveness of Jesus is also always with us. 罪を犯す誘惑がいつも私達の所にありますが、イエス様の赦しもいつも私達の所にあります。 Jesus is not with us because we wash our hands or because we try hard to be good, rather, it is his forgiveness that cleanses our hearts. イエス様が私達と共にいるのは、私達が自分の手を洗うからではありません。又、私達が良い子になるように一所懸命にするからでもありません。むしろイエス様こそが私達の心を清めます。

But rather than washing our hands, we need to wash our ears and polish our reading glasses. しかし手を洗うよりも、耳を洗って読書のメガネを磨く必要があるでしょう。 It is the Word of God that purifies our hearts.神様の御言葉は私達の心を清めます。 It is the Word of God’s love that creates love in our hearts. 神様の愛についての御言葉は私達の心の中に愛を作ります。 Even if your hands are dirty, fold your hand to pray, and even if your hands are dirty, open your Bible or devotion book daily and read it. 自分の手が汚(よご)れていても、手を組んで祈って、手が汚れていても聖書やデボーションの本を開いて毎日読みましょう。Hear the words of peace and forgiveness. 平和と赦しの言葉を聞きましょう。 Hear the words of encouragement and hope. 勇気と希望の言葉を聞きましょう。 Hear the words of psalms and hymns and praise music that put our trust in God. 詩編と讃美歌と聖歌の言葉は神様を信頼する信仰を作ります。 Hear the words of the prayer before eating. 食前の祈りの言葉を聞きましょう。Listen to Christian music in your house and in your car. 家の中にも車の中にもクリスチャンの音楽を聞きましょう。 Then let’s open our forgiven and purified hearts and our lips and sing words of praise and thanksgiving to God. 赦されて清められた心と唇を開いて神様に賛美して感謝しましょう。
