GOSPEL LESSON: Matthew 4:1–11 [Temptation of Christ in the desert.]
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

1さて、イエスは悪魔から誘惑を受けるため、“霊”に導かれて荒れ野に行かれた。 2そして四十日間、昼も夜も断食した後、空腹を覚えられた。 3すると、誘惑する者が来て、イエスに言った。「神の子なら、これらの石がパンになるように命じたらどうだ。《 4イエスはお答えになった。 「『人はパンだけで生きるものではない。神の口から出る一つ一つの言葉で生きる』 と書いてある。《 5次に、悪魔はイエスを聖なる都に連れて行き、神殿の屋根の端に立たせて、 6言った。「神の子なら、飛び降りたらどうだ。 『神があなたのために天使たちに命じると、 あなたの足が石に打ち当たることのないように、天使たちは手であなたを支える』 と書いてある。《 7イエスは、「『あなたの神である主を試してはならない』とも書いてある《と言われた。 8更に、悪魔はイエスを非常に高い山に連れて行き、世のすべての国々とその繁栄ぶりを見せて、 9「もし、ひれ伏してわたしを拝むなら、これをみんな与えよう《と言った。 10すると、イエスは言われた。「退け、サタン。 『あなたの神である主を拝み、ただ主に仕えよ』 と書いてある。《 11そこで、悪魔は離れ去った。すると、天使たちが来てイエスに仕えた。

“飛び降りてはいけない！”
Did the devil really want Jesus to make bread out of the stones? 悪魔は、本当にイエス様に石からパンを作って欲しいと思ったでしょうか。 I do not think so. そうではないと私は思います。 I think he wanted Jesus to die of starvation in the wilderness. イエス様が荒れ野で飢えて死んで欲しいと思ったでしょう。 Then Jesus could not die on the cross for our salvation. そうでしたら、イエス様が私達の救いの為に十字架上で死ぬ事が出来なかったでしょう。 But Jesus trusted in God His Father.しかし、イエス様は父なる神様を信頼しました。
Did the devil really want Jesus to jump off the pinnacle of the temple? 悪魔は、本当にイエス様が神殿の屋根の端（はし）から飛び降りて欲しいと思ったでしょうか。 I think he did. 飛び降りてもらいたいと思ったと私は思います。 Then Jesus would have hit the pavement and died. 飛びましたら、イエス様は地面の石に当たって死ぬでしょう。Then Jesus could not die on the cross for our salvation. そうでしたら、イエス様が私達の救いの為に十字架上で死ぬ事が出来なかったでしょう。 But Jesus trusted in God His Father. しかし、イエス様は父なる神様を信頼しました。 Jesus answered the first temptation with a quote from Scripture, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” 最初の誘惑に答えて、イエス様は聖書の言葉を引用しました、「人はパンだけで生きるものではない。神の口から出る一つ一つの言葉で生きる。《 And so for the next temptation, the devil quoted from Psalm 91:11-12, but the devil did not believe those words. それで、次の誘惑の時、悪魔は詩篇９１編１１-１２から引用しました。しかし、悪魔はその言葉を信じませんでした。 He devil did not think that God would send his angels to save Jesus. イエス様を助ける為に天使を送ると思いませんでした。 He was mocking the Psalm. その詩篇を侮辱しました。 He was mocking the faith of Jesus. イエス様の信仰を侮辱しました。
He is mocking our faith, too. 私達の信仰をも侮辱します。 “On their hands they [the angles] will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.” 「あなたの足が石に打ち当たることのないように、天使たちは手であなたを支える。《 But we know that we have stubbed our toes, and we have stumbled and fallen without the angels catching us. しかし、私達は、自分の足が何かにぶつかって、つまずく事があります。その時、天使が助けに来ませんでした。 We know that God Almighty could do a miracle, but usually he lets the laws of the physical universe take their course. 全能の神様は奇跡をする事が出来たと分かりますが、普通に、物質の自然の方法のままが許されています。 People die. 人は死にます。 And people are saved through medicine and the help of others. 又、薬によってや他の人の手によって人が助けられています。
Our faith is being tested this morning. 今朝、私達の信仰がテストされています。 We are concerned about the New Corona Virus. 新型コロナウイルスの心配があります。 Should we go to church or stay at home? 教会に行くか、それとも家にとどまる方が良いかと悩みます。 Will God protect us since we are in His church? 神様の教会の中にいますので、神様は私達を守るでしょうか。 Is wearing a mask a sign of unfaith? マスクを付ける事は上信仰のしるしでしょうか。 No, it is not. いいえ、そうではありません。 Wearing a mask is a sign of love. マスクを付ける事は愛のしるしです。 If we are sick we do not want to infect others. 自分が病気でしたら、他の人にそのウイルスを移したくありません。 If we are well, we do not want to get sick and infect others. 自分が元気でしたら、自分が病気になって他の人にそれを移す事をしたくありません。 And of course, whether we go to church or stay home, we pray.そして、もちろん、教会に良くても、家にいましても、祈ります。
The devil wants us to test our faith. 悪魔は私達の信仰を試みたいと思います。 We all have times when we wonder about the love and protection of God. 私達皆には、神様の愛と守りについての疑いがあります。 We wonder about the existence of God. 神様の存在も疑う事があります。 We want to see a sign. 私達は何かのしるしを見たいと思います。 Sometimes we actually are given a sign, or see something that bolsters our faith. 時々、しるしが本当に与えられています。又、自分の信仰を強くするしるしを見ます。 Of course the sign could also tell us that we are foolish sinners who are risking our lives rather than trusting God. しかし、そのしるしが教えるのは、自分がおろかな馬鹿な罪人で、神様を信頼する事よりも、自分の命をきけんにさらす事です。
“Jump off the pinnacle of the temple!” 「神殿の屋根から飛び降りなさい。《 “Jump off from the cross!” 「十字架上から飛び降りなさい。《 Jesus was tested. イエス様がテストされていました。 Jesus trusted God. しかし、神様を信頼しました。 In the Garden of Gethsemane he felt the temptation and testing of not drinking the bitter cup of suffering and death. ゲツセマネの園で、にがい苦しみと死の杯を飲まないように、試みられテストされました。 He prayed, “Not my will, but Yours be done.” しかし、祈りました、「しかし、わたしの願いどおりではなく、御心のままに。…あなたの御心が行われますように。《 Trusting his Father, he carried out the plan of salvation. 父なる神様を信頼して、救いのご計画を果たしました。 He died on the cross and on the third day he arose again. 十字架上で死んで、三日目に甦られました。 And so we can trust that our sin is forgiven, even the sin of wanting to test God. それで、私達の罪が赦されていると信頼する事が出来ます。神様をテストしたい罪も赦されています。
We are going to be tested. 私達には試みが来ます。 We will be tempted to test God. 私達に神様を試み見る誘惑も来ます。 Will God save me if I jump off the cliff? もし私が崖（がけ）から飛び降りましたら、神様が私を救うでしょうか。 If God wants me to stand at the bottom of the cliff, he will give me a parachute or a hang glider, or show me the stairway down or the elevator. もし神様の御心が、私がその崖の下の所に立つ事でしたら、パラシュートやハング・グライダを与えます。又、下までに行く階段やエレベータを教えるでしょう。 Or maybe God wants us to be at the top of the cliff, from which we can see the glory of the Lord. 又、神様の御心とは、私達がその崖の上に立つ事でしょう。そこから、主の栄光をみるからです。
When tested, let’s trust the Lord. テストされている時、主を信頼しましょう。
