Epiphany Sunday, January 4, 2015 The Points of the Star The Three Wisemen followed the Star that led them to the Christ-Child. Today it leads us to the same place where we too shall find the Savior. Since a star has five points, today’s sermon too shall have five points. In mathematics, a point is a fixed place on a graph. In geography, a point is the farthest end of a peninsula, like Maeda Point. In grammar, to point means to show the way toward something. In a speech a point is an important theme. Like the Wisemen, we want to find the point to which the Star is pointing. 1 To Israel, 2 to Bethlehem, 3 to Christ, 4 to us, 5 to the world 1. First the star pointed to Israel. The Wisemen saw the star and like scientists and scholars, they knew that a king had been born in Israel. We have to say that the Holy Spirit led them to this information. And like scientists who explore and go on adventures to learn more, they traveled to Israel. They were looking for a kings so naturally went to the palace of the king, King Herod. But there was no new prince there. 2. And again the Holy Spirit spoke, this time through the Holy Bible and pointed out that the True King of Israel in the line of King David had to be born in the City of David, in the town of Bethlehem. Just as a side-note. Scientist and scholars explore the earth and the universe. The cosmos shouts out the existence of God, but to find God the Holy Spirit must reveal Him. And this is done through the Word of God in the Bible. This is what led the Wisemen to the town of Bethlehem. 3. The Star pointed to Christ. The Wisemen miraculously found the place where Jesus was. Then the three gifts pointed out who the Baby was. The gold pointed out that he was a king, because a king must be honored by being given our most precious things. The frankincense points out that Jesus was a priest, because a priest uses incense in worship. It is burned as a sacrifice offering. A priest has the office of praying for people. And just as the incense smoke rises up, so the prayers rise up to heaven. And the myrrh points out that Jesus is a prophet. A prophet proclaims the word of God. Jesus will proclaim the Gospel. And often a prophet suffers because he proclaims the word of God which comes as judgment upon sinners. That is why Jesus suffered and was crucified. Not because he spoke sweet words of love and peace and forgiveness, but he was persecuted because he spoke words of judgment to those who do not love and who refuse the will of God. Myrrh is a medicine to relieve pain, and it was offered to Jesus on the cross but he did not drink it. It is also used in embalming, and was placed in the cloth when Jesus was buried. This is who Jesus is: The King of Israel, Son of David, Son of God, Son of Man who will preach the Gospel, forgive sin, pray for our salvation, and rule as the King of our lives. 4. The Star points to us. The Gospel shines in our lives because Jesus is the Light of the World. Our eyes are opened to see the love of God. The Holy Spirit gives us faith. The Word of God points out to us our sin and rebellion and tells us of God’s judgment. But shall we crucify Jesus again or shall we worship the one who was crucified for us? When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, he guides us like a star. 5. The Star points to the world. The Wisemen were not Jews, but rather Gentiles, people who were separated from the covenant promises of God. But the Star points out that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is for all the people of the whole world. And as a star points in all directions at once, so the Gospel is to be proclaimed to the ends of the earth. This is the mission that Jesus gave his Apostles. It is also our mission, the mission of Okinawa Lutheran Church. And so we pray that the Holy Spirit would guide us this year to do his work in the places he points us to. Amen. |
顕現主日、2015年1月4日 星の5つのポイント 三人の博士は子供のキリストに導いて下さった星に従いました。今日も救い主を見つける所まで私達をも導いて下さいます。 星には５つの角度があります。今日の説教にも５つの角度、５つのポイントがあります。数学的に言いますと、ポイントとは場所を教える点です。地理学的に言いますと、岬の一番先の所は英語でポイントと言います。前田岬は前田ポイントと言います。文法的に言いますと、英語のto point とは、指さす事、物がどこにあるか教える事です。演説には、一つのポイントは一つの大切なテーマです。博士達のように、その星が指すところを見付けたいと思います。 １．イスラエルに、２．ベツレヘムに、３．キリストに、４．私達に、５．全世界に。 １．まず、星はイスラエルを指しました。博士達はその星を見て、科学者や学者のように、イスラエルに王様が生まれたと分かりました。聖霊はその事を教えて下さったと言わなければなりません。そして、物ごとを調べる科学者のように、勉強する為に冒険に出かけるように、博士達はイスラエルへと旅に出て行きました。そして、王を探したので、勿論、王様の宮殿、ヘロデの所に行きました。しかし新しい若い王子がいませんでした。 ２．再び、聖霊は語りました。今度聖書の言葉を通して話して、本当のイスラエルの王、ダビデの家系の王は、ダビデの町、ベツレヘムで生まれる事を指しました。ところで学者や科学者たちは、この地球や宇宙を探検します。宇宙は神様の存在を叫びますが、神様を見つける為に、聖霊は神様を啓示する事が必要です。これは聖書の言葉によってです。その聖書は博士達をベツレヘムに導いて下さいました。 ３．その星はキリストを指しました。奇跡的に、博士達はイエス様がいる所を見つけました。そして、その３つの贈り物は、その子供がどなたであるかを指しました。黄金はイエス様が王様であると指しました。そして王様にこそ、私達のもっとも尊い物を贈らなければなりません。乳香はイエス様が祭司である事を指します。それは、祭司が礼拝の時に香を使うからです。犠牲の供え物として燃やします。祭司は人々の為に祈ります。香の煙が上に上がるように、祈りも天に昇ります。そして、没薬はイエス様が預言者であると指します。預言者は神様の御言葉を述べ伝えます。イエス様は福音を述べ伝えます。そして、神のみ言葉とその裁きを宣言する預言者が、よく迫害されて苦しめられています。その理由でイエス様が苦しみを受けて十字架上で殺されました。愛と平和と赦しの素晴らしい言葉を話したからではなくて、迫害されたのは、人を愛さないで、神様の御心を拒む人に対する、神様の裁きを宣言したからです。没薬は痛みを和らげる薬で、十字架上のイエス様に、人が飲ませようと思いましたが、イエス様はそれを飲みませんでした。又、没薬は死んだ人の体を塗る物で、イエス様がお墓にほうむられた時に、その布の中に置かれました。これはイエス様です：イスラエルの王、ダビデの子孫、神の子、福音を述べ伝える人間の子、罪を赦す方、私達の救いの為に祈る方、私達の人生を支配する王様です。 ４．星は私達にも指します。イエス様が世の光であるので、福音が私達の人生の中に輝きます。私達の目が開かれて神様の愛を見ます。聖霊は私達に信仰を下さいます。神の御言葉は私達の罪と犯行を指して、神様の裁きを教えます。しかし、私達は再びイエス様を十字架に付けるでしょうか、それとも、私達の為に十字架上で死んだ方を礼拝するでしょうか。イエス様を自分の救い主として信じて受け入れる時、星のように私達を導いて下さいます。 ５．星は全世界を指します。博士達はユダヤ人ではなくて、異邦人で、神様の契約の約束から離れた人でした。しかし、星が指すのはイエス・キリストの福音が全世界のすべての人々の為である事です。そして、星がすべての方向に同時に指すように、福音が地の果てまで述べ伝えられています。イエス様はこの宣教のミッションを使徒達に与えました。それは私達のミッションでもあります。沖縄ルーテル教会のミッションです。それで、今年も、聖霊がさす所で、私達がその働きが出来るように、聖霊の導きの為に祈ります。 アーメン。

Scientist and scholars explore the earth and the universe. ところで学者や科学者たちは、この地球や宇宙を探検(たんけん)します。 The cosmos shouts out the existence of God, but to find God the Holy Spirit must reveal Him. 宇宙は神様の存在を叫びますが、神様を見つける為に、聖霊は神様を啓示する事が必要です。 And this is done through the Word of God in the Bible. これは聖書の言葉によってです。 This is what led the Wisemen to the town of Bethlehem. その聖書は博士達をベツレヘムに導いて下さいました。 3. The Star pointed to Christ. ３．その星はキリストを指しました。 The Wisemen miraculously found the place where Jesus was. 奇跡的に、博士達はイエス様がいる所を見つけました。 Then the three gifts pointed out who the Baby was. そして、その３つの贈り物は、その子供がどなたであるかを指しました。 The gold pointed out that he was a king, because a king must be honored by being given our most precious things. 黄金はイエス様が王様であると指しました。そして王様にこそ、尊敬するので、私達のもっとも尊い物を贈(おく)らなければなりません。
4. The Star points to us. ４．星は私達にも指します。 The Gospel shines in our lives because Jesus is the Light of the World. イエス様が世の光であるので、福音が私達の人生の中に輝きます。 Our eyes are opened to see the love of God. 私達の目が開かれて神様の愛を見ます。 The Holy Spirit gives us faith. 聖霊は私達に信仰を下さいます。 The Word of God points out to us our sin and rebellion and tells us of God’s judgment. 神の御言葉は私達の罪と犯行を指して、神様の裁きを教えます。 But shall we crucify Jesus again or shall we worship the one who was crucified for us? しかし、私達は再びイエス様を十字架に付けるでしょうか、それとも、私達の為に十字架上で死んだ方を礼拝するでしょうか。 When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, he guides us like a star.イエス様を自分の救い主として信じて受け入れる時、星のように私達を導いて下さいます。 5.
