Where is the King?　王はどこですか？

MT 2:1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."
MT 2:3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. 5 "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written:
MT 2:6 " `But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.' "
MT 2:7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him."
MT 2:9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
MT 2:13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him."
MT 2:14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son."
MT 2:16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
MT 2:18 "A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more."
MT 2:19 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child's life are dead."
MT 2:21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets: "He will be called a Nazarene."

2:1 イエスは、ヘロデ王の時代にユダヤのベツレヘムでお生まれになった。そのとき、占星術の学者たちが東の方からエルサレムに来て、 2:2 言った。「ユダヤ人の王としてお生まれになった方は、どこにおられますか。わたしたちは東方でその方の星を見たので、拝みに来たのです。」
2:3 これを聞いて、ヘロデ王は不安を抱いた。エルサレムの人々も皆、同様であった。 2:4 王は民の祭司長たちや律法学者たちを皆集めて、メシアはどこに生まれることになっているのかと問いただした。 2:5 彼らは言った。「ユダヤのベツレヘムです。預言者がこう書いています。
2:6 『ユダの地、ベツレヘムよ、／お前はユダの指導者たちの中で／決していちばん小さいものではない。お前から指導者が現れ、／わたしの民イスラエルの牧者となるからである。』」
2:7 そこで、ヘロデは占星術の学者たちをひそかに呼び寄せ、星の現れた時期を確かめた。 2:8 そして、「行って、その子のことを詳しく調べ、見つかったら知らせてくれ。わたしも行って拝もう」と言ってベツレヘムへ送り出した。
2:9 彼らが王の言葉を聞いて出かけると、東方で見た星が先立って進み、ついに幼子のいる場所の上に止まった。 2:10 学者たちはその星を見て喜びにあふれた。 2:11 家に入ってみると、幼子は母マリアと共におられた。彼らはひれ伏して幼子を拝み、宝の箱を開けて、黄金、乳香、没薬を贈り物として献げた。 2:12 ところが、「ヘロデのところへ帰るな」と夢でお告げがあったので、別の道を通って自分たちの国へ帰って行った。
2:13 占星術の学者たちが帰って行くと、主の天使が夢でヨセフに現れて言った。「起きて、子供とその母親を連れて、エジプトに逃げ、わたしが告げるまで、そこにとどまっていなさい。ヘロデが、この子を探し出して殺そうとしている。」
2:14 ヨセフは起きて、夜のうちに幼子とその母を連れてエジプトへ去り、 2:15 ヘロデが死ぬまでそこにいた。それは、「わたしは、エジプトからわたしの子を呼び出した」と、主が預言者を通して言われていたことが実現するためであった。
2:16 さて、ヘロデは占星術の学者たちにだまされたと知って、大いに怒った。そして、人を送り、学者たちに確かめておいた時期に基づいて、ベツレヘムとその周辺一帯にいた二歳以下の男の子を、一人残らず殺させた。 2:17 こうして、預言者エレミヤを通して言われていたことが実現した。
2:18 「ラマで声が聞こえた。激しく嘆き悲しむ声だ。ラケルは子供たちのことで泣き、／慰めてもらおうともしない、／子供たちがもういないから。」
2:19 ヘロデが死ぬと、主の天使がエジプトにいるヨセフに夢で現れて、 2:20 言った。「起きて、子供とその母親を連れ、イスラエルの地に行きなさい。この子の命をねらっていた者どもは、死んでしまった。」
2:21 そこで、ヨセフは起きて、幼子とその母を連れて、イスラエルの地へ帰って来た。 2:22 しかし、アルケラオが父ヘロデの跡を継いでユダヤを支配していると聞き、そこに行くことを恐れた。ところが、夢でお告げがあったので、ガリラヤ地方に引きこもり、2:23 ナザレという町に行って住んだ。「彼はナザレの人と呼ばれる」と、預言者たちを通して言われていたことが実現するためであった。


Where is the King? 王様はどこですか？ "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him." 「ユダヤ人の王としてお生まれになった方は、どこにおられますか。わたしたちは東方でその方の星を見たので、拝みに来たのです。」Where is the King?　王はどこですか？

Of course the official King of Judah at that time was Herod. 勿論、その時代の正式なユダヤ人の王はヘロデ王でした。He was not born in the line of King David, but the Roman Senate had given him the title of “king.” 彼はダビデ王の家系に生まれた人ではありませんでした。 ローマの政府は｢王｣と言う肩書きをヘロデに与えました。Naturally, when the Wisemen came, Herod first thought of himself or his children or grandchildren. それで博士達が来る時、ヘロデ王は先ず自分の子供や孫の事を考えました。 But there were no little children in the household of Herod. しかし、ヘロデの親戚の中には赤ちゃんがいませんでした。 Was there a mistake? 何かの間違えでしょうか？ No one doubted the Wisemen because they were “Magi,” astrologers. いいえ、誰もその博士達を疑いませんでした。彼らは占星術の学者だったからです。People respected astrologers in those days. そしてその時代の人々は占星術の学者を尊敬しました。 And these astrologers had been given a revelation by God that the King of the Jews had been born. この占星術の学者達は、神様から啓示を受けました。それはユダヤ人の王が生まれた事です。 So where is the king? しかしその王はどこですか？ Then Herod realized that if it was not a member of his family, then it must be the Messiah, the Christ, sent by God. ヘロデ王が分かったのは、もし自分の家族の人ではなければ、神様が送ったメシア、キリストです。 Then he called upon those who studied the Bible and asked them where the Christ was to be born.　それでヘロデは聖書を勉強する学者達を呼びまして、キリストはどこに生まれるはずかと聞きました。

The Chief Priests and Teachers of the Law did not trust stars. But they trusted the Word of God. 祭司長たちや律法学者たちは星の占いを信頼しませんでしたが、神様のみ言葉を信頼しました。 And they answered Herod according to the Word of the Bible. 聖書の言葉によってヘロデに答えました。
"In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written: `But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.' "
2:5 彼らは言った。「ユダヤのベツレヘムです。預言者がこう書いています。2:6 『ユダの地、ベツレヘムよ、／お前はユダの指導者たちの中で／決していちばん小さいものではない。お前から指導者が現れ、／わたしの民イスラエルの牧者となるからである。』」

And so the Magi went to Bethlehem where they saw the star again. それで博士達はベツレヘムに行きました。そして、再びその星を見ました。 They found where the Christ Child was. 子供のキリストを見つけました。 They worshiped him and gave their gifts of gold, incense and myrrh. イエス様を拝みました。そして、宝物をあげました：黄金、乳香、没薬でした。

Later, King Herod tried to destroy the child by killing all the little boys in Bethlehem two years old and under. ヘロデはその後、ベツレヘムの２歳以下のすべての男の子を殺す事によって、子供のキリストを殺そうと思いました。 But it was not yet time for the Christ to die, so God sent Jesus to Egypt to be safe.　しかし、キリストの死ぬ時がまだ、だだったので、安全の為に神様はイエス様をエジプトに送りました。

Where is the King? 王はどこですか？ The Wisemen asked it, King Herod asked it, and so do we. 博士達も、ヘロデ王も、私達も聞きます。 But maybe our quest is more like that of Herod. しかし、私達が探すのは、ヘロデ王のような方でしょうか。 We think that we ourselves are kings and queens. 私達は、自分こそが王様や女王様のように考えます。 In our own little world at home or at work, it maybe so. 自分の小さな世界の中、自分の家や自分の仕事場の中では、そうかも知れません。 We want to control things, or at least know what is going on. 私達はものを知り、ものを支配したいと思います。 And like Herod, it is hard for us to give up control. ヘロデ王のように、コントロールを失いたくないと思います。 It is hard to share power with anyone else. 他の人と権力を分かち合う事が難しいです。 We understand Herod very well. 私達はヘロデ王の立場がよく分かります。 We may not like the murderous king, we may not be like him, but we understand why he wanted to destroy the Christ. 私達はヘロデ王が好きではないでしょう、私達はその人殺しの王のようではないでしょう、しかし、どうして彼がキリストを殺したいと思ったか分かります。 Sinful people do not want competition from God. 罪人は神様からの競争が欲しいと思いません。 Sinful people want to destroy Christ. 罪人はキリストを殺したいと思います。 Sinful people want to crucify him. 彼を十字架につけたいと思います。 And so we are more successful than Herod was. それで、私達の行動はヘロデ王より成功します。 In our sin and pride, we crucified Jesus. 私達の罪とプライドによって、私達はイエス様を十字架につけました。 We nailed him to the cross and put up the sign above his head, “This is he King of the Jews.”　釘でイエス様を十字架に付けて、頭の上に札をつけました、「これはユダヤ人の王である」と。

Where is the King? 王はどこですか。 We have found him! 見つけました！He is on the cross. 十字架の上です。 The Good News is that Jesus did not flee again to Egypt for safety, but rather suffered and died for us. 福音とは、イエス様が再び安全なエジプトに逃げなかったことです。私達の為に苦しみを受けて死んで下さいました。 At that time he served us as our King. その時、私達の王として私達の為に働いて下さいました。 He took upon himself the sin of the world, the responsibility for the sin of the world, and so died. 御自分の上に、世の罪を取り、世の罪の責任を取り死にました。 But in that death, he began to rule as King over hell and sin and death. しかし、この死ぬ事によって、悪魔と地獄と罪の上に王として支配し始めました。

Where is the King? 王はどこですか？ On the third day he rose again. ３日目に甦りました。 He ascended into heaven where he reigns as King of kings and Lord of lords. 天国に昇りました。あそこで、王の王、主の主として支配しておられます。

Where is the King? 王はどこですか？ Herod could not find him, but we can. 　ヘロデ王は彼を見つけられませんでしたが、私達には出来ます。 Jesus is in our hearts and lives. イエス様は私達の心の中にいますし、私達の人生の中にいます。 He is in the Bible. 聖書の中にいます。 He is in Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. 洗礼と聖餐式の中にいます。 He is in our prayers and the prayers of others who pray for us. 私達の祈りの中にも、私達の為に祈ってくれる人の祈りの中にもいます。 We do not have to follow a star and go to Bethlehem. 私達は星に従ってベツレヘムに行かなくてもいいです。 Jesus comes to us. イエス様は私達のもとに来られます。 In faith we find him. 信仰によって私達は彼を見つけます。 In faith we offer to him our treasures, we offer our very lives to him.　信仰によって私達は自分の宝をささげます、即ち、自分の人生こそを奉げます。
