| GOSPEL LESSON: Matthew 2:1–12 [The Magi visit the Child]
1Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: 6“‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’” 7Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” 9After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. | 福音書 マタイ2: 1～12(新2)
2:1 イエスは、ヘロデ王の時代にユダヤのベツレヘムでお生まれになった。そのとき、占星術の学者たちが東の方からエルサレムに来て、2 言った。「ユダヤ人の王としてお生まれになった方は、どこにおられますか。わたしたちは東方でその方の星を見たので、拝みに来たのです。《3 これを聞いて、ヘロデ王は上安を抱いた。エルサレムの人々も皆、同様であった。4 王は民の祭司長たちや律法学者たちを皆集めて、メシアはどこに生まれることになっているのかと問いただした。5 彼らは言った。「ユダヤのベツレヘムです。預言者がこう書いています。 6 『ユダの地、ベツレヘムよ、／お前はユダの指導者たちの中で／決していちばん小さいものではない。お前から指導者が現れ、／わたしの民イスラエルの牧者となるからである。』《 7 そこで、ヘロデは占星術の学者たちをひそかに呼び寄せ、星の現れた時期を確かめた。8 そして、「行って、その子のことを詳しく調べ、見つかったら知らせてくれ。わたしも行って拝もう《と言ってベツレヘムへ送り出した。9 彼らが王の言葉を聞いて出かけると、東方で見た星が先立って進み、ついに幼子のいる場所の上に止まった。 10 学者たちはその星を見て喜びにあふれた。11 家に入ってみると、幼子は母マリアと共におられた。彼らはひれ伏して幼子を拝み、宝の箱を開けて、黄金、乳香、没薬を贈り物として献げた。12 ところが、「ヘロデのところへ帰るな《と夢でお告げがあったので、別の道を通って自分たちの国へ帰って行った。 | <>/tr>
“Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 「ユダヤ人の王としてお生まれになった方は、どこにおられますか。わたしたちは東方でその方の星を見たので、拝みに来たのです。《The Wisemen came to worship Jesus. 占星術の学者達はイエス様を拝みに来ました。 Today I want to think about why they came to “worship” him and also about why we come to “worship” him. 今日考えたいと思うのは、どうして彼らが「拝みに《来たかと、どうして私達も「拝みに《来るでしょうかと。 I also want to think about what “worship” really is.又、「拝む《事、｢礼拝｣とは何でしょうかについて考えたいと思います。
We call them “Wisemen” or “Magi” or “Kings” (“We Three Kings of Orient Are”), or as the Japanese says, “Astrologers.” 彼らを「博士《や「マゴイ《や「王《や「占星術の学者達《とも呼びます。 My Bible dictionary says that they were originally a priestly class of people. 聖書の辞典を調べまして，元々，祭司の級の人々でした。 They were priests who did sacrifices. 犠牲をおこなう祭司でした。 They were also philosophers, scientists, scholars, diviners of sacrifices, astronomers and also astrologers. 又は、哲学者であり、科学者であり、研究者であり、犠牲の意味を説明する人であり、てんもん学者であり、星占いの人でもありました。 They were in Persia, Chaldea, Babylon, and Arabia. ペルシャ、カルデア、バビロン、及びアラビアにいました。 In Greek they are called “Magi” from which comes the word “magician”. ギリシャ語では「マゴイ《と呼ばれています。その言葉から、「マジック《と言う言葉が来ます。
Actually, modern Bible scholars and astronomers do not know what star they saw. 実は、現代の聖書学者や天文学者も、マゴイが見た星がどの星であったか分かりません。 But some how it was revealed to them that a king had been born in Judea. しかし、ユダヤ地方に王が生まれた事が彼らに掲示されていました。 If they were from Babylon, where the Jews had been in exile, and if they knew some Jews who still lived there or if they knew the Jewish Bible, then they could have some idea of what sort of king the child must be. 以前、ユダヤ人はバビロンに捕囚されました。もし博士達がバビロンから来ましたら、多分その地方にまだ住むユダヤ人を知ったでしょう。又、ユダヤ人の聖書を知りましたら、生まれた子供はどのような王になるか少し分かるでしょう。He would not be a regular prince, but a religious figure sent by God. 普通の王子ではなく、神様から送られた宗教的な者でしょう。 And so they went to Jerusalem to “worship” him.それで、エルサレムへ「拝みに《行きました。
Usually when a child is born, family and friends congratulate the new parents and give baby-shower presents. 普通の子供が生まれる時、親戚や友達が新しい親達に「おめでとう《と言って、ベイビーシャーヮーのプレゼントをあげます。 If a royal prince is born, ambassadors and the like would come and congratulate the royal parents. もし王子が生まれましたら、別の国の使者などが来まして、王にプレゼントをあげるでしょう。 But the Magi are not ambassadors. しかし、マゴイは使者ではありませんでした。 They were not interested in King Herod. ヘロデ王に興味がありませんでした。 They had come like priests to worship the child. 博士達は祭司のように、子供を拝みに来ました。 This is what upset King Herod and all the people of Jerusalem. それで「ヘロデ王は上安を抱いた。エルサレムの人々も皆、同様であった《と。 They knew that if the child were to be worshiped, and the Jews never worship human beings but only God, then the child must be the Messiah.もし、その子供を拝む事でしたら、そしてユダヤ人達は決して人間を拝まない、神様だけを礼拝するので、この子はきっとメシヤであると分かりました。
Worship is not congratulations, but it is a celebration. 礼拝とおめでとうは違いますが、お祝いです。 Worship is not a prayer that asks for something. 拝む事は何かを願う祈りではありません。 Worship recognizes the mercy and grace and blessings and salvation given by God, but it is not done in order to get those things from God. 礼拝は神様から来た憐れみと恵みと祝福と救いを認めますが、神様からそれを得る為にしません。 Worship is pure thanks. 礼拝は純粋な感謝です。 It is acknowledgement of the majesty of God. 神様の栄光を認めます。 The Wisement gave gifts to Jesus that show their faith. 博士達は、信仰を表す贈り物をあげました。 They did not expect to get anything back from the gold, frankincense and myrrh. 黄金、乳香、没薬をあげましたが、自分達が何かをもらうと思いませんでした。 It was an expression of their “exceedingly great joy” of having found their quest. 探したものを見つかった時のあふれた喜びの表現でした。
They worshiped the Christ Child because it was the natural thing to do for a Magi. 子供キリストを拝むのは、マゴイにとって、当然な事でした。 That is what they do. マゴイはそのような事をするそうです。 The Holy Spirit gave them an epiphany-revelation: 聖霊は彼らに権限・掲示を与えました: through the star, through the Bible passage that the Jerusalem priests read to them, and then even in a dream, the Holy Spirit revealed to them instructions on how to return home safely.星によって、エルサレムの祭司達が読んだ聖書の箇所によって掲示を与えました。最後に、夢の中の啓示で安全な帰り道を教えられました。
How about us? 私達の場合はどうでしょうか。 Why have we come to worship the Christ Child? どうして私達も子供のキリストを拝みに来たでしょうか。 We do not have to travel to Bethlehem because Christ comes to us. キリストが私達のいる所に来られるので私達は遠いベツレヘムまでに行かなくても良いです。 And we especially find Christ here in the Sunday morning “worship service.” 又、今日の「日曜日の礼拝のサービス《の中でキリストを見つけます。 Were you guided this morning by a star to come to church? 今朝、教会に来る為に星に導かれたでしょうか。 Maybe you came because your mother made you. もしかしたら、お母さんに行かれされたでしょうか。 Maybe you came by habit, or because it is fun, or to visit friends, or to pray for something special, or because the Holy Spirit has given you faith. 来るのは、癖か、教会が楽しいからか、友達がいるからか、特別な祈りがあるからか、聖霊が信仰を与えたからでしょうか。 These are all good reasons to come to church. このすべては、教会に来る良い理由です。 And while we are here, let’s worship Christ. では、教会に来ましたので、キリストを拝みましょう。
We worship in our songs and prayers and the sacrament and in the silence of our hearts. 拝むのは、賛美の歌、祈り、聖礼典、心の静かな所でします。 We do not – or should not – worship in order to get something from God. 神様から何かを得る為に礼拝しない・してはいけません。 Our offerings do not buy God’s favor. 私達の献金が神様の好意を得ません。 God is not bribed or flattered. 神様はわいろやお世辞を受けません。 We might tell our mother that she is pretty, and then ask for money. お母さんがキレイだと言って、お金ちょうだいと願うかもしれません。 We might try flattery with people who are vain and proud, and it might work. 威張(いば)っている人やうぬぼれている人の場合には、お世辞はいいでしょう。 But true worship is different. しかし、本当の礼拝は違います。 God has already given us salvation. 神様はもう既に私達に救いを下さいました。 Our worship says “thank you.” 私達の礼拝は「ありがとうございます《と言います。 Our songs and liturgy and offerings express the feelings and faith in our hearts.私達の歌と式文や献金は私達の心や信仰を表します。
There are many Christian denominations and many worship styles. 多くのキリスト教会の宗派があり、多くの礼拝のスタイルもあります。 And even in the Lutheran Church there are different worship styles, from the very formal high-church to the very casual low-church and no-church. ルーテル教会の中にも、いろいろの礼拝のスタイルがあります、儀式を大事にする「ハイ･チャーチ《からとっても自由な礼拝の形の「ロー・チャーチ《までです。 Some styles I find are more meaningful to me personally and some just plain disturb me. 私個人に意味深いスタイルがあれば、落ち着かないスタイルもあります。 But the thing that makes me want to fall on my knees like the Magi and worship Christ, is when I see the cross of Christ. しかし、マゴイと同じようにひれ伏してキリストを拝みたい時があります、それはキリストの十字架を見る時です。 When I see my sins on that cross. その十字架上に自分の罪を見る時です。 When I see the love of God that died for me. 私の為に死んでくださった神の愛を見る時です。 Then my worship becomes very personal. その時、私の礼拝はとっても個人的なものになります。 There may be a hundred people in church around me, but I am connected to God one-to-one. 私の周りに１００人が教会の中にいましても、私は神様にワン・ツ・ワンとしてつながれています。 And that is worship. これこそは礼拝です。 We are all connected to God.私達皆が神様につながれています。
“Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his cross and empty grave and have come to worship him.” 「ユダヤ人の王としてお生まれになった方は、どこにおられますか。わたしたちは彼の十字架と空っぽうのお墓を見たので、拝みに来たのです。《
