My favorite section in this long Gospel reading of John Chapters 18 and 19 is the scene in the Garden of Gethsemane when Jesus is arrested. 今日の長い福音書、ヨハネ１８章と１９章の中での、私の好きな箇所とは、イエス様がゲッセマネの園で逮捕される時です。 Jesus has finished his praying and now the soldiers and Jewish officials have come to find him. その苦しい祈りを終えまして、兵士とユダヤ人達はイエス様を探しに来ました。 Jesus knew everything that was going to happen to him. 御自分の身に起こる事、これからどうなるか、イエス様は何もかも知りました。 He had the chance to run away, but rather he went up and met them. 逃げるチャンスがありましたが、進み出て彼を迎えました。 “Whom do you seek?” 「誰を探しているのか」と聞きました。 “We want Jesus of Nazareth.” 「ナザレのイエスだ」と。 Jesus answered, “I am he.” そしてイエス様はこのように言われました。「私である」と。 As soon as he had said that, they drew back and fell to the ground. そう言われると、彼らは後(あと)ずさりして地に倒れました。 It is like a big force of energy had come out of Jesus and blew them back. 何か、イエス様の中から大きな力か威力（いりょく）が出て、彼らを後ろの方に吹き飛ばしてしまったみたいです。 Why did that happen? どうしてそのようになったでしょうか。 It is because Jesus said, “I am.” それは、イエス様が「私である」と言われたからです。

The Name of God is “I AM.” 神様の名前とは、「私である」と言う名前です。 When Moses asked God at the burning bush what his name was, God answered, “I AM WHO I AM.” モーセが燃える芝の所で神様と話した時、神様の名前を聞きました。その時、神様はこのように答えて下さいました、「わたしはある。わたしはあるという者だ」と言われました。 “Say to the people of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” (Ex.3:14) また、「イスラエルの人々にこう言うがよい。『わたしはある』という方がわたしをあなたたちに遣わされたのだと。」（出3:14）。In Hebrew it is “YHWH, Yahweh.” ヘブライ語では「ヤーウェー」です。 The Second Commandment says, “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.” 第二戒めはこれです、「あなたの神、主の名をみだりに唱えてはならない。」。 To keep that Commandment, pious Jews never even said God’s name, they avoided using it by using terms like “Heaven” or “Lord.” その戒めを守る為に、敬虔(けいけん)なユダヤ人は、決して神様の名前を話しませんでした。それを避ける為に、「天国」や「主」と言いました。 They used grammatical passive statements in order to avoid saying God’s Name. For example, rather than say “May God bless you” they would say “May you be blessed.” 又、神様の名前を話す事を避ける為に、文法的に、受け身の形を使いました。例えば、「神があなたを祝福する」と言わないで、「あなたが祝福されるように」と言いました。 And so Jesus surprised them, even shocked them, by saying the divine Name. それで、イエス様が神様の名前を言われますと、そのユダヤ人達にはびっくりで、彼等はショックを受けました。Jesus said, “I AM, I am he, I am the one you are seeking. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth and I AM he. イエス様は言われました。「私である」と「あなたがたが探しているナザレのイエスは、私である」と。 Jesus of Nazareth is the LORD GOD YHWH.” ナザレのイエスは主なる神様ヤーウェーです。 This is the Incarnate Word-made-flesh, God-with-us Emmanuel. この方こそは肉体となった御言葉であり、神が私達と共にいるイマヌエルです。 When those people who had come out to arrest Jesus heard the Name of God, they were blown back and they fell down on the ground in the posture of prayer and worship, even if it was against their intentions. イエス様を逮捕しようと思った人々が神様の名前を聞く時、後ずさりして、地に倒れました。それは彼らの計画ではありませんでしたが、それは祈りと礼拝の姿です。

This scene in the Garden is very important. ゲッセマネの園の中の出来事は大切です。 It shows that Jesus is in control. イエス様がすべてをコントロールしている事を表します。 He came out to meet those who would arrest him. 彼を逮捕する為に人々を出迎えました。 He told them to let the disciples go and not to arrest them also. 弟子達を「去らせなさい」、逮捕しないように命令しました。 He told Peter to put his sword away and not to try to prevent his arrest. イエス様の為に戦おうと思ったペテロにその逮捕の邪魔をしないで、「剣をさやに納めなさい」と言われました。 Jesus told Peter, “Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?” (18:1). 「父がお与えになった杯は、飲むべきではないか」と言われました。 The arrest, trial, suffering, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus is the plan of God for our salvation. 即ち、イエス様の逮捕、裁き、苦しみ、十字架に付ける事、又復活は、私達の救いの為の神様の御計画でした。

Jesus is in control. イエス様がすべてをコントロールします。 Even at his trial, Jesus is not afraid of his accusers or of Pilate. 裁かれている時も、イエス様はその告発者(こくはつしゃ)らをもピラトをも恐れません。 When Pilate asked if he was the king of the Jews, he did not deny it, but he would have chosen a better word than king, perhaps the word Messiah or Savior or Lord. ピラトがイエス様に「お前がユダヤ人の王なのか」と聞いた時、イエス様はそれを否定しませんでしたが、『王』と言う言葉より違う言葉を選ぶでしょう、例えば『メシアか主か救い主』でしょう。18:37, “You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” 18:37, そこでピラトが、「それでは、やはり王なのか」と言うと、イエスはお答えになった。「私が王だとは、あなたが言っていることです。私は真理について証しをするために生まれ、そのためにこの世に来た。真理に属する人は皆、私の声を聞く。」

Jesus is in control. イエス様がすべてをコントロールします。This is again shown in the dialog with Pilate, 再び、ピラトとの対話でそうです。19:9b-11. “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer. 10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?” 11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.” 19:9-11. 再び総督(そうとく)官邸(かんてい)の中に入って、「お前はどこから来たのか」とイエスに言った。しかし、イエスは答えようとされなかった。10 そこで、ピラトは言った。「私に答えないのか。お前を釈放(しゃくほう)する権限(けんげん)も、十字架につける権限も、この私にあることを知らないのか。」11 イエスは答えられた。「神から与えられていなければ、私に対して何の権限もないはずだ。だから、私をあなたに引き渡した者の罪はもっと重い。」

Jesus is in control. イエス様がすべてをコントロールします。 He tells the disciple John to take care of his mother Mary. 弟子ヨハネが母マリアを大事にするように言われました。

Jesus is in control. イエス様がすべてをコントロールします。 He said “It is finished” (19:30) and bowed his head and gave up his spirit. 最後に「成し遂げられた」と言われ、頭を垂(た)れて息を引き取られました。 Even at the moment of death, he chose the time to die, he was in control.　死ぬ時も、死ぬ瞬間をも選びました。イエス様がすべてをコントロールします。

One thing I want to stress today: that Jesus is God Almighty. 今日、強調しようと思うのは、イエス様は全能の神様である事です。 He was born on this earth as a human in order to save humans from sin, death, and the devil. 人間として生まれたのは、私達人間を罪や死や悪魔から救い出す為です。 Jesus had some nice teachings about love, but in his death he showed to us what love really is. 愛について素晴らしい教えがありましたが、死ぬ時、愛は本当に何であるか教えました。 He showed the measure of his love for us. 私達の為の愛の測りを見せて下さいました。

Jesus asked those who had come out to arrest him, “Whom do you seek?” イエス様は彼を逮捕しようと思った人々に、「誰を探しているのか」と聞きました。 They answered, “We want Jesus of Nazareth.” 「ナザレのイエスだ」と答えました。 Today, whom do you seek? 今日、あなたは、誰を探しているでしょうか。 Whom do you want to find? 見付けたいのは誰でしょうか。 Who is it that can bring you salvation and help and strength and healing and peace and control? 救いと助けと力と癒しと平和とコントロールを与えるのは誰でしょうか。 Sometimes we can relate to Jesus. 私達はイエス様の事をよく理解する時があります。 Like Jesus was arrested, we feel that someone is out to get us, イエス様が逮捕されたように、私達も誰かが私達を捕(つか)まえようとするものがあるように感じる時があります。like a trial to pry into our lives, イエス様が裁かれたように、誰かが私達のプライベートの事を調べて裁く事があるように感じます。 to embarrass us before other people, イエス様と同じように、他の人の前で侮辱さあれて、恥ずかしくなった時があります。 to punish us for something we did not do, 又、イエス様のように、私達も自分が出来なかった罪や、誤りの為に罰を受けた事があります。to inflict bodily and emotional harm and pain, 私達も体の上にも、心の中にも痛みと害を受けた事があります。and we see death before our eyes. 又、自分の目の前で死を見る事があります。“Whom do you seek?” 「誰を探しているのか。」 We seek our Savior. 救い主を探します。

Jesus asks us, “Whom do you seek?” イエス様は私達に聞きます、「誰を探しているのか。」 We confess, “We want Jesus our Savior.” そして、私達は信仰を告白して『救い主なるイエス・キリストです』と答えます。 And Jesus replies, “I AM HE.” そして、イエス様は返事して下さいます。「私である」と。

Amen. アーメン。
