I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE

私が命のパンである

John 6:22-35
22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone. 23 Then some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.
25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” 26 Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.” 28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” 30 So they asked him, “What miraculous sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31 Our forefathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32 Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 “Sir,” they said, “from now on give us this bread.”
35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.

6:22 その翌日、湖の向こう岸に残っていた群衆は、そこには小舟が一そうしかなかったこと、また、イエスは弟子たちと一緒に舟に乗り込まれず、弟子たちだけが出かけたことに気づいた。 6:23 ところが、ほかの小舟が数そうティベリアスから、主が感謝の祈りを唱えられた後に人々がパンを食べた場所へ近づいて来た。 6:24 群衆は、イエスも弟子たちもそこにいないと知ると、自分たちもそれらの小舟に乗り、イエスを捜し求めてカファルナウムに来た。
6:25 そして、湖の向こう岸でイエスを見つけると、「ラビ、いつ、ここにおいでになったのですか」と言った。 6:26 イエスは答えて言われた。「はっきり言っておく。あなたがたがわたしを捜しているのは、しるしを見たからではなく、パンを食べて満腹したからだ。 6:27 朽ちる食べ物のためではなく、いつまでもなくならないで、永遠の命に至る食べ物のために働きなさい。これこそ、人の子があなたがたに与える食べ物である。父である神が、人の子を認証されたからである。」 6:28 そこで彼らが、「神の業を行うためには、何をしたらよいでしょうか」と言うと、
6:29 イエスは答えて言われた。「神がお遣わしになった者を信じること、それが神の業である。」 6:30 そこで、彼らは言った。「それでは、わたしたちが見てあなたを信じることができるように、どんなしるしを行ってくださいますか。どのようなことをしてくださいますか。 6:31 わたしたちの先祖は、荒れ野でマンナを食べました。『天からのパンを彼らに与えて食べさせた』と書いてあるとおりです。」 6:32 すると、イエスは言われた。「はっきり言っておく。モーセが天からのパンをあなたがたに与えたのではなく、わたしの父が天からのまことのパンをお与えになる。 6:33 神のパンは、天から降って来て、世に命を与えるものである。」 6:34 そこで、彼らが、「主よ、そのパンをいつもわたしたちにください」と言うと、
6:35 イエスは言われた。「わたしが命のパンである。わたしのもとに来る者は決して飢えることがなく、わたしを信じる者は決して渇くことがない。

The Gospel reading for today and the next two weeks have the same theme, namely that Jesus says, “I Am the Bread of Life.” 今日の福音書の日課と次の２つの主日の福音書には同じテーマがあります、即ち、イエス様は言われます、「私が命のパンである」と。 Today I want to look at each of those words and seriously look at what Jesus is saying. 今日このイエス様の言葉を一つづつ見て、真面目にイエス様のみ言葉を見たいと思います。

The first word is “I.” 最初の言葉は「私」です。 Jesus is not sharing this honor of giving bread with anyone else. イエス様はパンを与える事の名誉を、ほかの人と分かちあいません。 It was not really Moses who gave the manna in the wilderness; it was the heavenly Father. 荒れ野でパンを与えたのは、モーセではなくて、天の父なる神様でした。 And now the Father in Heaven is giving us the true bread from heaven, which is Jesus Christ Himself. 今度父なる神様は、私達に誠の天からのパンを与えて下さいます。即ちイエス･キリストご自身です。 The bread is not the 5 loaves next to the lake that Jesus broke and fed 5000 people. このパンとは、水辺で5千人を食べさせた５つのパンと違います。 Jesus is himself the bread. イエス様ご自身がこのパンです。 Do not look for things other than Jesus. イエス様以外のものを探してはいけません。 Do not look at other teachers or prophets. ほかの先生や預言者の所を見てはいけません。 Do not look to the Law of Moses for nourishment. 栄養の為に、モーセの律法を見てはいけません。 Do not even look at food to sustain your life. 又、自分の命を支える為に、食事も見てはいけません。 Look to Jesus who said, “I Am the Bread of Life.”　「私が命のパンである」と言われたイエス様を見なさい。

The second word is “Am.” ２つ目の言葉は「である」です。日本語の文書の最後の言葉ですが、聖書のギリシャ語や英語の場合には、２つ目です。 This is present tense. 文法で現在形です。 Salvation is right now. 救いは今です。 We do not have to wait for the future. 将来の為に待たなくてもいいです。 Life with God is now. 神様との命はもう既にあります。 Sometimes Christians live with their head off in the future. 時々キリスト信者の頭は未来に浮(う)いているみたいです。 They forget that they have a calling from God to live for God right now. 私達が忘れるのは、神様からの呼びかけとは、今神様の為に生きる事です。 But Jesus comes to us right now. イエス様は今私達の所に来られています。 He IS the bread of life. イエス様は命のパンである。 He IS working in our lives right now. 今、イエス様は私達の人生の中で働いています。 And so we work with God right now too. それで、私達は今、神様と共に働きます。

The combination of the first and second words is “I AM.” 一つ目と二つ目の言葉を合わせますと、「私である」となります。 “I AM” is the name of the Lord God, Yahweh. 「私はある」とは主なる神様、ヤーウェーの名前です。 At the burning bush, God revealed his name to Moses. 燃えている芝の所で、神様は御自分の名前を、モーセにこのように教えました。 He said “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you’” (Ex.3:14). （出エジプト3:14）、「私はある。私はあるという者だ」と言われ、また、「イスラエルの人々にこう言うがよい。『私はある』という方が私をあなたたちに遣わされたのだと。」 Jesus is the bread of life; the Lord God Yahweh is the bread of life. イエス様は命のパンである。主なる神様ヤーウェーは命のパンである。 This morning I do not want to go into the details of the mystery of the Holy Trinity. 今朝、聖なる三位一体の神様の神秘について話したくありません。 But the clear teaching in the New Testament is that Jesus is God. しかし、新約聖書はイエス様が神様であるとはっきり教えます。 It is God that gives the bread of life. 命のパンを与えるのは神様です。 At the same time it is God who is the bread of life. 同時に神様はその命のパンです。 In Jesus Christ God gives himself to us that we might have life. イエス･キリストに於いて、神様は私達に御自分を与えて下さいますので、私達が命を得る事が出来ます。

The third word is “the.” ３つ目の言葉は「the」です。 This little word is important. 日本語にはない言葉ですが、英語とギリシャ語には大切な小さな言葉です。It means that there is only one bread. その意味とは、パンが一つしかない事です。 Jesus is not just one of many breads, a bread among others, but the one and only bread that will give life. 多くのパンの中で一つのパンの事ではありません、ほかのパンがありません、イエス様は命を与える、ただ一つのパンです。There may be other things, but Jesus is the one and only true bread. ほかの物があるでしょうが、イエス様はただ一つの誠のパンです。

“I am the bread.” 「私はパンである」と。 Bread is made of wheat flour. パンが小麦粉で作られた物です。 There is something about the characteristic of wheat flour that when mixed with yeast it will rise. 小麦粉の特徴は、イースト菌と混ぜましたら、ふくらみます。 That does not work with rice or oats or corn or potatoes or other grains. 別の物はそのようになりません。お米、大麦、トモロコシ、芋、別の穀物はそのようにふくらみません。 At the time of Jesus, bread was the main food, just like rice is the main food in Japan. イエス様の時代、パンは主食でした。日本でお米が主食と同じでした。So Jesus says that he is the food of life. ですから、イエス様は「私が命の食事である」と言われます。 We sinners look to other things when we are hungry. お腹がすいている時、私達罪人はほかの物を探します。 When we are emotionally hungry or bored, we look at other things that we think will give us a better life: love, education, friends, drugs, food, drink, sports, fun, and entertainment. 精神的に飢えている時、退屈な時、より良い人生を与えるだろうと思うほかの物を探します。例えば：愛、教育、友達、薬、食べ物、飲み物、スポーツ、遊楽、エンターテインメントなどです。 But do they satisfy or do they leave us hungry in our hearts? しかし、そのものが私達を満足せせるでしょうか。心を満腹にするでしょうか。 Because these things are gifts of God, and because they are in the list when we pray in the Lord’s Prayer “give us this day our daily bread,” we receive them with thanksgiving, of course. このものは神様からの贈り物であるので、主の祈りの「日ごとの糧」のリストに含まれているので、神に感謝していただきます。勿論。 And when we give thanks for our sandwich or rice ball, we thank God for giving us Jesus Christ, the True Bread from heaven.そして、サンドイチやおにぎりをいただく時、その食事の為に感謝しながら、本当の天からのパンであるイエス･キリストを下さった神様に感謝します。

Finally: “life.” 最後に「命」です。 Jesus said, “I am the bread of life.” イエス様は言われました、「私が命のパンである」と。 What is life? では、命とは何ですか。 Ask the philosophers, theologians, career councilors, your school teacher, your peers, scientists, biologists and zoologists, and adventurers and people who want to have fun. 色々の人に聞きましょう:哲学者、神学者、就職の指導カウンセラー、あなたの学校の先生、自分の友達、科学者、生物学者、冒険者、遊び人。 Today I want to try this definition. 今日、この定義はどうでしょうか。 Life is being with God, or life is the love of God. 命とは神様と共にいる事です。命とは神様の愛です。 Because God loves this world there is life. 神様がこの世を愛するので、命があります。 There is life for plants, animals and humans. 植物や動物や人間の為の命があります。 And in Jesus Christ there is eternal life. そして、イエス･キリストには永遠の命があります。 It is eternal because he is eternal and he gives himself to us. 　この命が永遠のものであるのは、イエス･キリストが永遠のもので、御自分を私達に与えるからです。 He died on the cross, but on the third day he rose again. 十字架上で死にましたが、３日目に甦りました。 He died so that we too can live. 私達も生きる事が出来る為に、イエス様は死にました。 He is the bread that gives us eternal life, life with God, life with the love of God.　イエス様は私達に永遠の命を与えるパンです。それは神様と共にある命です。神様の愛と共にある命です。
