GOSPEL LESSON: John 11:1–41 [Jesus heals the blind man on the Sabbath.]
As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” Having said these things, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man's eyes with the mud and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing. The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” Some said, “It is he.” Others said, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” So they said to him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed and received my sight.” They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.”
They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And there was a division among them. So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.”
The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” (His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.) Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”
So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.” He answered, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” And they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.” The man answered, “Why, this is an amazing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” They answered him, “You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they cast him out.
Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” He answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.” He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.” Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, “Are we also blind?” Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains.

福音書 ヨハネ11:17～53 (新p.189) 11:17 さて、イエスが行って御覧になると、ラザロは墓に葬られて既に四日もたっていた。 11:18 ベタニアはエルサレムに近く、十五スタディオンほどのところにあった。 11:19 マルタとマリアのところには、多くのユダヤ人が、兄弟ラザロのことで慰めに来ていた。 11:20 マルタは、イエスが来られたと聞いて、迎えに行ったが、マリアは家の中に座っていた。 11:21 マルタはイエスに言った。「主よ、もしここにいてくださいましたら、わたしの兄弟は死ななかったでしょうに。 11:22 しかし、あなたが神にお願いになることは何でも神はかなえてくださると、わたしは今でも承知しています。《 11:23 イエスが、「あなたの兄弟は復活する《と言われると、 11:24 マルタは、「終わりの日の復活の時に復活することは存じております《と言った。 11:25 イエスは言われた。「わたしは復活であり、命である。わたしを信じる者は、死んでも生きる。 11:26 生きていてわたしを信じる者はだれも、決して死ぬことはない。このことを信じるか。《 11:27 マルタは言った。「はい、主よ、あなたが世に来られるはずの神の子、メシアであるとわたしは信じております。《 11:28 マルタは、こう言ってから、家に帰って姉妹のマリアを呼び、「先生がいらして、あなたをお呼びです《と耳打ちした。 11:29 マリアはこれを聞くと、すぐに立ち上がり、イエスのもとに行った。 11:30 イエスはまだ村には入らず、マルタが出迎えた場所におられた。 11:31 家の中でマリアと一緒にいて、慰めていたユダヤ人たちは、彼女が急に立ち上がって出て行くのを見て、墓に泣きに行くのだろうと思い、後を追った。 11:32 マリアはイエスのおられる所に来て、イエスを見るなり足もとにひれ伏し、「主よ、もしここにいてくださいましたら、わたしの兄弟は死ななかったでしょうに《と言った。 11:33 イエスは、彼女が泣き、一緒に来たユダヤ人たちも泣いているのを見て、心に憤りを覚え、興奮して、 11:34 言われた。「どこに葬ったのか。《彼らは、「主よ、来て、御覧ください《と言った。 11:35 イエスは涙を流された。 11:36 ユダヤ人たちは、「御覧なさい、どんなにラザロを愛しておられたことか《と言った。 11:37 しかし、中には、「盲人の目を開けたこの人も、ラザロが死なないようにはできなかったのか《と言う者もいた。 11:38 イエスは、再び心に憤りを覚えて、墓に来られた。墓は洞穴で、石でふさがれていた。 11:39 イエスが、「その石を取りのけなさい《と言われると、死んだラザロの姉妹マルタが、「主よ、四日もたっていますから、もうにおいます《と言った。 11:40 イエスは、「もし信じるなら、神の栄光が見られると、言っておいたではないか《と言われた。 11:41 人々が石を取りのけると、イエスは天を仰いで言われた。「父よ、わたしの願いを聞き入れてくださって感謝します。 11:42 わたしの願いをいつも聞いてくださることを、わたしは知っています。しかし、わたしがこう言うのは、周りにいる群衆のためです。あなたがわたしをお遣わしになったことを、彼らに信じさせるためです。《 11:43 こう言ってから、「ラザロ、出て来なさい《と大声で叫ばれた。 11:44 すると、死んでいた人が、手と足を布で巻かれたまま出て来た。顔は覆いで包まれていた。イエスは人々に、「ほどいてやって、行かせなさい《と言われた。 11:45 マリアのところに来て、イエスのなさったことを目撃したユダヤ人の多くは、イエスを信じた。 11:46 しかし、中には、ファリサイ派の人々のもとへ行き、イエスのなさったことを告げる者もいた。 11:47 そこで、祭司長たちとファリサイ派の人々は最高法院を召集して言った。「この男は多くのしるしを行っているが、どうすればよいか。 11:48 このままにしておけば、皆が彼を信じるようになる。そして、ローマ人が来て、我々の神殿も国民も滅ぼしてしまうだろう。《 11:49 彼らの中の一人で、その年の大祭司であったカイアファが言った。「あなたがたは何も分かっていない。 11:50 一人の人間が民の代わりに死に、国民全体が滅びないで済む方が、あなたがたに好都合だとは考えないのか。《 11:51 これは、カイアファが自分の考えから話したのではない。その年の大祭司であったので預言して、イエスが国民のために死ぬ、と言ったのである。 11:52 国民のためばかりでなく、散らされている神の子たちを一つに集めるためにも死ぬ、と言ったのである。 11:53 この日から、彼らはイエスを殺そうとたくらんだ。 ＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊＊
Lazarus died. ラザロは死にました。 He was dead. 完全に死にました。 He had been buried. お墓に葬られました。 The funeral was over but people were still in mourning. お葬式が終わりましたが、人々がまだまだ悲しみました。 He had been buried for four days and the tomb was closed. With no food nor water nor fresh air for four days, he was surely dead. もう４日もたっていたので、閉じられたお墓の中には食べ物や飲み物や新鮮な空気がなかったので、確かに死んだのです。Therefore, the miracle of Jesus was surely a miracle that even the Pharisees had to admit. ですから、このイエス様の奇跡は、ファリサイ派の人々でさえも認めなければならない本当の奇跡でした。
Jesus died. イエス様は死にました。 He was dead. 完全に死にました。 The soldier at the foot of the cross knew it. 十字架の下に立っていた兵士はそれを知りました。 He stuck him in the side with his spear. 槍をイエス様の脇に刺しました。 Perhaps he pierced him to make sure, perhaps for fun or disrespect, but then blood and water poured out of his side, which alone would have killed him. 刺したのは、確認するか、遊びか、侮辱するためでしょうか。しかし、イエス様の脇から血と水が交ざって流れたので、それだけでイエス様を殺すでしょう。 Pilate made sure Jesus was dead and then officially allowed Jesus to be buried. ピラトはイエス様が死んだかどうか確認して、葬る許可を与えました。 He was buried in a sealed tomb.イエス様は封印されたお墓に収められました。Therefore, the resurrection of Jesus was surely a true resurrection even if the Pharisees did not want to admit it. ですから、このイエス様の復活は、ファリサイ派の人々が認めたくなくても、本当の復活でした。
There was mourning for Lazarus. ラザロの為に人々が悲しみました。 Even Jesus wept. イエス様でさえも涙を流されました。 There was mourning for Jesus also. イエス様の為にも悲しみがありました。 His Mother and his followers wept. お母さんと弟子達は涙を流したでしょう。
Martha, the sister of Lazarus, had hope for the resurrection on the Last Day and eternal life. ラザロの姉妹、マルタには、世の最後の日の復活と永遠の命の希望がありました。 In contrast, it seems that the disciples of Jesus had lost all hope. 反対に、イエス様の弟子達は希望を捨ててしまったみたいです。 Rather than hope, they had fear. 希望よりも、恐れがありました。
Why did Jesus raise Lazarus? どうしてイエス様がラザロを甦らせたでしょうか。 Surely it was out of love. 確かに愛の為にでした。 Lazarus was his good friend, and so were his sisters Mary and Martha. ラザロはイエス様の良い友達でした、姉妹マリアとマルタもそうです。 His love was shown in his tears. その愛はイエス様の涙によって表されました。 But perhaps Jesus was also crying because he had the vision of his own dying. しかし、もしかしたら、イエス様が泣いたのは、ご自分の死の幻があったでしょうか。He knew that in order to give life to not only Lazarus but to all the dead, he himself would have to suffer and die. イエス様が知ったのは、ラザロに始め、すべての死人に命を与える為に、御自分が苦しみを受けて死ななければならない事です。 Perhaps in this gospel story we see a Jesus whose unhindered tears brought him into deep solidarity with the pain and sorrow of this world. もしかしたら、この福音書には、イエス様の隔しなかった涙が、この世の悲しみと痛みとの深い連帯関係を造ったでしょう。 Jesus knew and felt and experienced the pain and sorrow of this world. イエス様ご自身は、この世の悲しみと痛みを知って、感じて、経験したからです。 It is the love of John 3:16 which sent Jesus to save the grieving world.これはヨハネによる福音書３章１６節の愛です。即ち、この悲しむ世を救う為に送った愛です。
Why did God the Father raise Jesus? どうして父なる神様がイエス様をよみがえらせたでしょうか。 Jesus is the “Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world,” then as a sacrifice with our sins upon him, it would be normal that he died. イエス様は「世の罪を取り除く神の子羊《です。それで、犠牲として御自分の上に私達の罪を取って、死ぬ事は普通です。 When sin is forgiven, we want that sin to remain dead. 罪が赦されましたら、その罪が死んだままでいてほしいです。 We do not want it resurrected. その罪に復活がないようにと思います。 But in Jesus Christ, our sin is so forgiven that it disappears. しかし、イエス・キリストによって、その罪が消えてしまう程赦されています。 The resurrection of Jesus proves that fact. イエス様の復活はその事を証言します。 The grave stone is rolled away so that we can look into the tomb and see that it is empty. お墓の石が横に転がされているので、私達がそのお墓の中を見て、空っぽであると見えます。 Jesus was victorious over death and sin and hell.イエス様は、死と罪と地獄の上に勝利を持って甦りました。
Just as Lazarus died, we too must die. ラザロが死んだと同じように、私達も死ななければなりません。 Unless Jesus returns in Glory soon, we will all die sometime. イエス様が栄光をもってすぐこの世に戻れなければ、私達皆がいつか死にます。 But before we physically die, we must first spiritually die. しかし、体が死ぬ前に、まず、霊的に死ぬ事が必要です。 We must die with Jesus. 私達はイエス様と共に死ななければなりません。 The condemnation of our sin puts us on the cross with Jesus. 私達の罪に対する宣告の罰の為に、私達がイエス様と共に十字架に付けられています。 When we confess our sin, our sin is put on Jesus. 私達は自分の罪を告白する時、その罪がイエス様の上に置かれています。 And so, just as Jesus rose from the dead, we do also. それで、イエス様が復活したと同じように、私達も復活します。 Just as Jesus left our sin in Hell so that he rose pure and holy, so we too must leave our sin behind and rise pure and holy. イエス様が私達の罪を地獄に捨てて置かれて、清くて聖なる者として甦ったと同じように、私達も私達の罪を捨てて、清くて聖なる者として甦えなければなりません。 That is what Baptism is. それは洗礼です。 Baptism is a daily dying and rising with Christ. 洗礼とは、キリストと共に毎日死んで甦る事です。
Jesus calls to us as he called to Lazarus, “Come out!” ラザロに呼びかけたのと同じように、私達にも「オイ！出て来い！《と言われます。 It is resurrection, it is new life, it is new birth. これは復活です。新しい命や新しい人生で、新しい生まれです。 We take off the grave clothes and are freed to live the life of Christ.私達はそのお墓の朊を脱いで、キリストの人生を自由に生きるようにされています。
