1 Cor. 12:31b–13:13 Love
And now I will show you the most excellent way.
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12 Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

わたしはあなたがたに最高の道を教えます。
13:1 たとえ、人々の異言、天使たちの異言を語ろうとも、愛がなければ、わたしは騒がしいどら、やかましいシンバル。13:2 たとえ、預言する賜物を持ち、あらゆる神秘とあらゆる知識に通じていようとも、たとえ、山を動かすほどの完全な信仰を持っていようとも、愛がなければ、無に等しい。13:3 全財産を貧しい人々のために使い尽くそうとも、誇ろうとしてわが身を死に引き渡そうとも、愛がなければ、わたしに何の益もない。
13:4 愛は忍耐強い。愛は情け深い。ねたまない。愛は自慢せず、高ぶらない。 13:5 礼を失せず、自分の利益を求めず、いらだたず、恨みを抱かない。13:6 不義を喜ばず、真実を喜ぶ。13:7 すべてを忍び、すべてを信じ、すべてを望み、すべてに耐える。
13:8 愛は決して滅びない。預言は廃れ、異言はやみ、知識は廃れよう、13:9 わたしたちの知識は一部分、預言も一部分だから。13:10 完全なものが来たときには、部分的なものは廃れよう。13:11 幼子だったとき、わたしは幼子のように話し、幼子のように思い、幼子のように考えていた。成人した今、幼子のことを棄てた。13:12 わたしたちは、今は、鏡におぼろに映ったものを見ている。だがそのときには、顔と顔とを合わせて見ることになる。わたしは、今は一部しか知らなくとも、そのときには、っきり知られているようにはっきり知ることになる。
13:13 それゆえ、信仰と、希望と、愛、この三つは、いつまでも残る。その中で最も大いなるものは、愛である。

Today’s epistle lesson is the famous First Corinthians Chapter Thirteen. 今日の使徒書はその有名な第一コリント１３章です。 It is about love. 愛についてです。 It is often read at weddings, but love is not just for husbands and wives, it is for the whole family, it is for your friends, it is for your fellow workers and classmates and church members. よく結婚式の時に読まれています。しかし、この箇所は夫婦だけの為にではありません。家族の皆の為にですし、友達の為にも、また同じ職場や学校や教会の人の為にもです。 And it is even for those people you do not like. 自分の好きではない人の為にもです。

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 13:4 愛は忍耐強い。愛は情け深い。ねたまない。愛は自慢せず、高ぶらない。13:5 礼を失せず、自分の利益を求めず、いらだたず、 恨みを抱かない。13:6 不義を喜ばず、真実を喜ぶ。13:7 すべてを忍び、すべてを信じ、すべてを望み、すべてに耐える。

When we read this at weddings, it is with a hope and a prayer that the couple will actually be able to love each other in this way. 結婚式で読む時、この新しい夫婦が本当にこのようにして、互いに愛し合うことが出来るように希望して祈ります。 We read this passage to show what perfect love is like. 完全な愛はどのようなものかを教える為に読みます。

The Bible word for love, agape, is not just a feeling, it is action. 聖書の愛と言う言葉、 アガペは、ただの気持ちの上だけのものではなくて、 行動です。 We have action because we have a connection with that other person. 行動があるのは、その他の人との関係があるからです。 There is responsibility; there is a duty, an obligation to love. そこには責任があり、 愛する義務があります。 God does not give us a choice as to whether we love someone or not. 神様は私達に選択を与えません、他の人を愛するか愛さないかと言う選択チョイスがありません。It is a commandment, it is a command. これは命令です。 “Love your neighbor.” 「隣人を愛せよ。」I think that the opposite of love is not hate.愛の反対とは、憎しみではないと私は思います。 I think that the opposite of love is sinful inaction. 愛の反対とは、罪深く何もしない事でしょう。 That is what the story of the Good Samaritan teaches us. それは、良いサマリア人の話しの教えです。 Those who did not show concern for the man beaten by robbers were sinners who did not show love for their neighbor. 泥棒に襲われた人を助けてくれなかった人々は、隣人に愛を現されなかった罪人です。

Love is action. 愛は行動です。 It comes from my heart. 愛は私の心から来ます。 Love is a revelation of who I am. 愛は私がどの者であるかを現します。 The love I do is me. Perhaps the existential “me.” 私がする愛は私です。 And so I am going to re-read verses 4-7 and instead of the word “love” I am going to read my name. それで、４節から７節までもう一度読みます。今度、「愛」と言う言葉の代わりに、自分の名前を置き変えます。 As you listen, put your own name in the sentence. 聞きながら、皆さんも自分の名前を入り変えて下さい。

Michael is patient, Michael is kind. I do not envy, I do not boast, I am not proud. Michael is not rude, he is not self-seeking, he is not easily angered, he keeps no record of wrongs. Michael does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. Michael always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. マイケルは忍耐強い。マイケルは情け深い。私はねたまない。 私は自慢せず、高ぶらない。マイケルは礼を失せず、自分の利益を 求めず、いらだたず、恨みを抱かない。マイケルは不義を喜ばず、真実を喜ぶ。マイケルはすべてを忍び、すべてを信じ、すべてを望み、 すべてに耐える。

Do these words really describe me? このようにして、この言葉は本当に私の事を現すでしょうか。 Do these words describe you? この言葉はあなたの事を本当に表すでしょうか。 Is your life like this or are you more like a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal? あなたの人生はこのようでしょうか、それとも、騒（さわ）がしいどら、やかましいシンバルの様でしょうか。

St. Paul wrote “11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.” 聖パウロは書きました、「13:11幼子（おさなご）だったとき、私は幼子のように話し、幼子のように思い、幼子のように考えていた。成人した今、幼子のことを棄てた。」 We are no longer children in the faith. 私達は洗礼を受けたので、もう既に信仰の赤ちゃんではありません。 In our Baptism we have been given the mission to love our neighbor. And our neighbor is anyone who needs our love, no matter how near or far away they are. そして、私達の隣人とは、私達の愛を必要とするすべての人です、その人が近くにいましても、遠くに住んでいても隣人です。 If we do not love our neighbor, we are not doing the work of Christ, and so we are not living as a Christian. もし私達は隣人を愛さなければ、私達はキリストの働きをしていないので、私達は本当のクリスチャンとして人生を送っていないことになります。

To live as a Christian we need Christ. クリスチャンとして生きる 為に、私達にはキリストが必要です。 That is why Christ came to this world. その為にキリストはこの世に来られました。 John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” ヨハネ３：１６、「神は、その独り子をお与えになったほどに、世を愛された。独り子を信じる者が一人も滅びないで、永遠の命を得るためである。」 That shows the patience and kindness of God. これは神様の忍耐と情けを現しています。 Christ was not self-seeking and so he died on the cross for us. キリストは御自分の利益を求めず、私達の為に十字架上で死にました。 That is forgiveness, which means he keeps no record of wrongs. これは赦しです。即ち、恨みを抱きません。 And he takes no pleasure in evil and injustice, rather he rejoices in all that is right and true. 悪と不義を喜ばず、代えって、真実と正しい事を喜びます。

In Christ there is true love. キリストには本当の愛があります。 He is the both the source and the power for us to love. 私達の愛する事の源であり、力です。And so in closing, I am going to re-read verses 4-7 and instead of the word “love” I am going to read name Christ. それで最後に、４節から７節までもう一度読みます。今度、「愛」と言う言葉の代わりに、「キリスト」の名前を言い変えます。

Christ is patient, Christ is kind. He does not envy, he does not boast, he is not proud. Jesus is not rude, Jesus is not self-seeking, Jesus is not easily angered, Jesus keeps no record of wrongs. Christ does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. Christ always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. キリストは忍耐強い。キリストは情け深い。彼はねたまない。 キリストは自慢せず、高ぶらない。キリストは礼を失せず、自分の利益を求めず、いらだたず、恨みを抱かない。キリストは不義を喜ばず、真実を喜ぶ。キリストはすべてを忍び、すべてを信じ、すべてを望み、すべてに耐える。
