It was a Sabbath Day. 安息日でした。 First Jesus drove out an evil spirit from the man in the synagogue. 先ず、イエス様は会堂にいた人の悪霊を追い出しました。 Then he cured Simon Peter’s mother-in-law who was suffering from a fever. 次に、熱を出して寝ていたシモン・ペテロのしゅうとめを癒しました。 And by the end of the day, everyone in town had heard about it and they brought to Jesus all who were sick or oppressed by demons. その日の暮れごろまでに、町のすべての人々がその事について聞いていたので、病人や悪霊に取りつかれた者を皆、イエスさまのもとに連れて来たのです。 And Jesus cured very many people that day.　その日、イエス様は多くの人々を癒して下さいました。

On this day, people did not come to Jesus to hear the Word of God, but rather to be healed. この日、人々がイエス様のもとに来るのは、イエス様から神様の御言葉を教えてもらう事だけではなくて、むしろ癒してもらうためでした。 They did not come for something spiritual, but for something physical. 何かの霊的なものの為ではなく、体の為のものでした。 Perhaps they came to Jesus for the wrong reason, but they did come. イエス様の所に来る理由は一番良い理由ではなくても、彼らはよく来ました。 And many of them saw more than only miraculous healing. そして多くの人々は奇跡の癒しだけではなく、別なものも見ました。 They saw the love of God. 即ち神様の愛を見ました。 They saw in Jesus the love of God who cares for them. イエス様の中に神様が彼らの事を大事にする事を見ました。 They saw a love that said that they were important. 彼らが大切な者であると現す愛を見ました。 They saw that God does care for them, both body and soul. 彼らは体をも魂をも大事にする神様を見ました。 And so there must have been much rejoicing in that town that night. ですから、その夜その町には、大いなる喜びがあったでしょう。

Jesus loved people and wanted to heal them, イエス様は人々を愛して、彼らを癒したいと思いました。but Jesus came for more than just healing the people, he came to speak the Word of God. しかし、イエス様が来られるのは、人々を癒す為にだけではなく神様の御言葉を語る為です。 And so the next morning he told his disciples, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.” それで、次の朝、弟子達に言われました。「近くのほかの町や村へ行こう。そこでも、わたしは宣教する。そのためにわたしは出て来たのである。」 Jesus came to preach the Good News of Salvation. 救いの福音を述べ伝える為に来られました。 That Good News Gospel says that God forgives sin. その良い知らせの福音が言うのは、神様が罪を赦す事です。 Jesus continued to cure the sick and to cast out demons, but he put more emphasis on preaching and teaching about God. イエス様は続けて人々を癒したり悪霊を追い出したりしましたが、神様の事を述べ伝え、御言葉を教える事をさらに強調しました。

You see, healing the sick was just temporary. と言うのは病気の人を癒す事は、一時的な事だけでした。 All those people eventually got sick again and died. その人皆が、後で再び病気になったりして死にました。 But the Word of God heals the sick soul, and a healthy soul never dies. しかし神様の御言葉は、病気の魂を癒しますので、元気な魂は決して死にません。 The people who were cured by Jesus died eventually. イエス様によって癒された人々が後で死にました。 Bodily health was temporary. 体の健康は一時的なものであるのです。 But the death and resurrection of Jesus proves that even death is temporary. しかし、イエス様の死と復活が現すのは、死でさえも一時的なものである事です。

At least at first, many people came to Jesus because of the healing. 先ず最初にイエス様の所に集まった人々は、その癒しの為でした。 It made the headlines. トップニースになりました。 It made people interested in Jesus. 人々はイエス様の事に興味を持ちました。 People came for a cure, but then they also heard the Good News. 癒しの為に来ましたが、福音をも聞きました。 A lot of people first come to church looking for a miracle. 多くの人々が教会に最初に来るのは、奇跡を求めるからです。 They want to be healed, they want their personal problems solved, they want to make money. 病気からの癒しが欲しい、個人の問題の解決が欲しい、お金が欲しいと思います。 They want health and wealth. この表現があります。「信仰、健康、銀行」と。 I read an article in a magazine from my seminary which talked about spirituality.アメリカの神学校の雑誌の中で、霊的な礼拝についての記事を読みました。 The article said that people come to church looking for magic – not miracles but magic. その記事によりますと、人々が教会に来るのは、マジックを求めるからだと。奇跡ではなくてマジックです。 Magic is something that can be achieved if you have the right formula -- Say the right prayers, make the right gestures, give the right offering, believe right in your heart, etc. マジックとは、正しい祈りを言ったら、正しいジェスチャーをしたら、正しい献金をしたら、正しい事を考えて信じたら、魔法のようになります。 Sometimes there are evangelism rallies with great emphasis on healing. ある時の伝導集会の大きな強調点とは、癒しです。 Sometimes people go there for the show, to see and to feel the magic. そのマジックを見たり、経験したりする為に、そのショーを見る為に行きます。 Do not get me wrong. 誤解しないで下さい。 I do believe in praying for the sick, I do believe that God answers our prayers. 私は病気の人の為に祈る事を信じます。神様が私達の祈りに答える事を信じます。 But answering prayers is not magic. しかし祈りをかなえる事はマジックではありません。 Magic manipulates faith in order to get something done. マジックは、何かをする為に信仰を利用します。Then, faith is just a tool in the bag of magic tricks. その時、信仰はマジックのトリックの道具の一つになります。A real miracle is not a trick. 本当の奇跡はトリックと違います。 It does not try to manipulate God. 神様を利用しようと思いません。It does not make a promise by saying, “God, if you heal me I will change my life.” 「神よ、私を癒して下さいましたら、人生を変えます」などと約束しません。A real miracle relies solely on the mercy and grace of God. 本当の奇跡は、ただ、神様の恵みと憐れみにたよります。

What is the greatest miracle of all? 一番大きい奇跡とは何でしょうか。 Remember, a miracle is not a magic act, but rather it is something that shows the love of God. 奇跡はマジックのショーではなく、奇跡は神様の愛を表すものです。 What miracle really shows the love of God? この奇跡が本当に神様の愛を表すでしょうか。 I think it is the death of Jesus on the cross. 私が思うのは、それが十字架上のイエス様の死です。 I think it is a miracle that Jesus actually died on the cross. イエス様が十字架上で死ぬ事が本当に奇跡だと思います。 After all, Jesus was both human and divine. イエス様は同時に人間であり神様です。 It might be natural that people die, but it is not natural that God should die. 人間が死ぬ事は当然や自然でしょうが、神様が死ぬ事は自然ではありません。 By definition, God cannot die. 「神」でしたら、死ぬ事は不可能はずです。 It was a special miracle. 特別な奇跡です。 It was a special something that showed the love of God. 神様の愛を表す特別なものでした。 It showed that God loves us so much that he gave his one and only Son to die for us, in order to forgive our sin. 私達の罪を赦す為に、神様がご自分の一人の子が死ぬ為に与えたほどの愛です。

I think the second greatest miracle would be the Resurrection of Jesus. 二番目の大きな奇跡とは、イエス様の復活でしょう。 It too shows the love of God. それも神様の愛を表します。 It proves that death is only temporary. 死が一時的なものだと教えます。 It proves that life with God is eternal. 神様との命が永遠のものであるとの証拠です。 It proves that God really does love us because Jesus promised that all who believe in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 神様が本当に私達を愛する事の証拠です。何故ならばイエス様が約束したように、イエス様を信じる人は滅びないで、永遠に生きるからです。

I think the third greatest miracle is faith. 三番目の大きな奇跡とは信仰です。 I think it is a miracle that a human can believe in God. 人間が神様を信じる事が出来る事は、奇跡だと思います。 With our sinful eyes we cannot see God. 私達の罪深い目で私達は神様を見る事が出来ません。 Scientists cannot find him. 科学者達は神様を見つけられません。 The theological expression for this condition is “original sin.” この状態を表す神学的な表現とは「原罪」です。 Faith is a miracle because the Holy Spirit works that miracle in our hearts. 信仰が奇跡であるのは、聖霊がその奇跡を私達の心の中で働かせるからです。 Martin Luther’s Small Catechism says it this way in the explanation of the Third Article of the Apostle’s Creed. マルチン･ルターの小教理問答書は、使徒信条第三条の説明で、このように言います。 “I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Hoy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith.” 「私は、自分の理性や能力によっては、私の主イエス・キリストを信じることも、みもとに来ることもできないことを信じます。けれども聖霊が、福音によって私を召し、その賜物をもって私を照らし、まことの信仰のうちに私をきよめ、支えてくださることを信じます。」

Do you want to see a miracle? 奇跡を見たいと思いますか。 Do you believe in God? 神様を信じますか。 Then there is already a miracle in your heart! そうでしたら、もう既に、あなたの心の中に奇跡があります。 The Holy Spirit has created the miracle of faith in your heart. 聖霊は、あなたの心の中で奇跡をなさいました。 What more do you need? それ以上必要がありますか。

What more do you need? それ以上必要がありますか。 We do not need anything more to prove the love of God. 神様が私達を愛する証拠でしたら、それで十分です。 Christ died, Christ rose, and we believe that he will come again. キリストが死んで、キリストが復活した、キリストが再び来られると私達は信じます。

And yet, we live in this world of sin and pain and suffering. それなのに、私はこの罪深い、痛みと苦しみの世に生きています。 And so we pray. ですから私達は祈ります。 We do not pray for magic. マジックの為に祈りません。 We pray that the miracle of God’s love would be shown in the lives and in the bodies and minds of those whom we love. 神様の愛の奇跡が、私達の愛する人々の人生やその体と心の中にあらわされるように祈ります。 We pray for healing. 癒しの為に祈ります。 And that is a sign of our love. それこそが私達の愛のしるしです。 We pray with confidence, knowing that Jesus can do what we pray for, and can do even more. 確信を持って祈ります。それは、イエス様が私達の祈りに答える事が出来ると信じるからです。私達の祈りを超えて答える事が出来ます。 We know that Jesus will answer us with the love of God in the best way for us.　そして私達に分かるのは、今完全に理解する事が出来なくても、私達の為に一番良い方法で、神様の愛を表して下さる事です。

I enjoy watching a magic show. 私はマジックのショーを見るのが好きです。 It is fun to try to figure out what the trick is, and there is always a trick. そのトリックをさぐる事が楽しいです。そして、いつも何かのトリックがあります。I enjoy seeing a miracle, because I know there is no trick. 私は奇跡を見るのが好きなのは、トリックがないと分かるからです。 There is only the love of God. ただ、神様の愛があります。
