In the Bible there is not a single good thing said about pride. 聖書の中には誇りや自慢に対して、良い言葉が一つもありません。Pride is always bad. プライドはいつも悪いです。 It is bad because proud people think they are number one, to the detriment of other people. どうして悪いかと言いますと、誇りを持っている人は、自分が一番だと思うからです。それで、ほかの人が皆がだめな人間だと思います。 They think they are number one and everyone else are losers. 自分が一番で、他のすべての人々はクズに過ぎないと思います。 Proud people think they have the right, and even the duty, to put other people down. プライドを持つ人は、他の人を見下す権利がある、いや、義務があると思います。 They think it is necessary to put other people in their place. 他の人が自分より高くならないよう、他の人が“自分の場所をわきまえているように”努力doryokuしなければならないと思います。 It may be from a sense of insecurity, or it may be from a sinful, distorted sense of social order. それをする理由は自分の弱さを感じるからでしょうか。それとも、罪深く、曲がっている社会からくる思いがあるからかもしれません。 They may actually be the best or the champion, but sinful pride is not what the Bible teaches. その人は本当に一番優れている人であるかも知りません、本当にチャンピオンであるかも知れませんが、しかし、聖書が教える事と違います。 The Bible teaches “love your neighbor as yourself.”　聖書は「隣人を自分自身のように愛しなさい」と言います。

Worse than that, the problem with pride is that proud people think they are number one, when the Bible teaches that God is Number One. 聖書は神様が一番であると教えますので、自分が一番だと考える人のプライドの問題は、更にひどくなります。 The proud person does not think God is necessary. 傲慢な人は神様が要らないと思います。 And so pride is also against the Bible command to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and power.” ですから、プライドは聖書の命令、即ち「心を尽くし、精神を尽くし、思いを尽くして、あなたの神である主を愛しなさい。」に反します。 And so pride calls into question a person’s salvation. そのプライドの故に、その人の救いが危ないです。 Is a proud person saved?　そのような人は救われるでしょうか。

Have you ever heard of the so-called “Seven Deadly Sins”? 言われている「死に至る七つの罪」と言う表現を聞いた事がありますか。 They are the following: 1. Pride, 2. Envy, 3. Anger, 4. Avarice (Greed), 5 Sadness (Sloth), 6. Gluttony, and 7. Lust. その七つの罪とは：１．プライド、２．しっと、３．いかり、４．よくばり、５．ゆううつ（又なまけ）、６．食べ過ぎ、そして７．性欲です。 The top of the list is Pride or Arogance. そのリストの一番上にあるのは、プライド、即ち、傲慢です。It is a deadly sin, a sin that leads to death and damnation because it does not think it needs God for salvation.それが死に至る罪とは、即ちそれが滅びに至る罪とは、救いの為に神様が要らないと思うからです。

Some people think pride is important to motivate people and to get them to a certain behavior. ある人はプライドを利用して、人々が正しく振る舞うよう、意欲（いよく）を与えましたら良いと思います。 But pride is not what we need. しかし必要なのは誇りではありません。 We need repentance.必要なのは、悔い改めです。 We need to know who we really are and where we really stand in relationship to God, who is indeed Number One. This is called “humility.” 神様との関係において、自分の本当の価値を理解し、自分の本当の姿、自分がどこに立っているかを理解して、誰が一番か理解する事は、「けんそん」と呼ばれています。 Humility really understands the truth about ourselves. けんそんは、自分自身の本当の真実が分かります。 It realizes that we cannot save ourselves, that we need Jesus as our Savior. 自分で自分を救う事が出来ない事が分かります。救い主としてイエス様が必要でると分かります。 It realizes the love of God. 神様の愛が分かります。God’s love gives us the power to love others. そして、その愛は他の人を愛する力を与えます。 This love lifts others up. It builds others up.この愛は人を高く立たせます。Jesus gives an example of this type of love in today’s Gospel lesson. この愛の種類の例が今日の福音書の日課に書かれています。 Jesus says, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors, if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”　　イエス様はこのように言われました。「昼食や夕食の会を催すときには、友人も、兄弟も、親類も、近所の金持ちも呼んではならない。その人たちも、あなたを招いてお返しをするかも知れないからである。14:13 宴会を催すときには、むしろ、貧しい人、体の不自由な人、足の不自由な人、目の見えない人を招きなさい。14:14 そうすれば、その人たちはお返しができないから、あなたは幸いだ。正しい者たちが復活するとき、あなたは報(むく)われる。」

The best example of humility is Jesus Christ. けんそんの一番良い例とは、イエス・キリストです。 Since he is God Almighty, he is Number One. イエス・キリストは全能の主なる神様ですので、ナンバーワンです。 He has the genuine right to be proud. 誇る権利があるお方です。 And yet, Jesus humbled himself in order to save humans. しかし、人間を救う為に御自分を低くしました。 He left heaven and came down to earth. He was born in a stable in Bethlehem. しかし天国を出て、この地上に下りて来ました。ベツレヘムの馬小屋で生まれました。 He lived a poor life. 貧しい生活を送りました。He taught, healed, and helped many people. 多くの人を癒したり、教えたり、助けたりしました。 He preached the Good News and gave people hope and faith in God. 良い知らせを述べ伝えて、多くの人々に希望と信仰を与えました。 Then he humbled himself even more, becoming a servant to die on the cross for our salvation. なおさら御自分を低くして、私達を救う為に、十字架上で死ぬ僕（しもべ）の身分になりました。 Then he rose victorious on the third day. そして、３日目に勝利者として甦りました。 He had defeated the devil. 悪魔を征服しました。 But this did not create a new problem of pride, because Jesus continues to love us and invites us to the heavenly banquet.しかし、これはイエス様にとって、プライドの問題になりませんでした。彼は私達を愛し続けて、天国の夕食の会に私達を招きます。

The place of honor is next to the guest of honor. 上席とは、特別なお客さまのそばです。 Jesus calls us to come up to where he is. イエス様は私達皆をご自分のそばに来るように招かれます。 He calls us to come to his Table. ご自分の食卓の所に招きます。 He is the Host and gives us the Holy Sacrament. 彼はその宴会の会長で、私達に聖餐を下さいます。 He loves us and bestows on us the honor of being his friends, of being his brothers and sisters, and of being children of the Heavenly Father. 私達を愛して、私達に栄光を与えます、即ち、ご自分の友として、天の父の子供達として、ご自分の兄弟姉妹としての栄光です。 Jesus is always with us where ever we are, and so we can be happy where ever we are seated at the banquet. 私達がどこにいましても、イエス様はいつも私達と共にいますので、宴会の席はどこにいても、幸せです。 We are always honored that Christ shares his presence with us!キリストが私達と共にいてくださいますので、私達はいつもその栄光をいただきます。
