ローマ5:6-11. 6 実にキリストは、わたしたちがまだ弱かったころ、定められた時に、上信心な者のために死んでくださった。7 正しい人のために死ぬ者はほとんどいません。善い人のために命を惜しまない者ならいるかもしれません。8 しかし、わたしたちがまだ罪人であったとき、キリストがわたしたちのために死んでくださったことにより、神はわたしたちに対する愛を示されました。9 それで今や、わたしたちはキリストの血によって義とされたのですから、キリストによって神の怒りから救われるのは、なおさらのことです。10 敵であったときでさえ、御子の死によって神と和解させていただいたのであれば、和解させていただいた今は、御子の命によって救われるのはなおさらです。11 それだけでなく、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストによって、わたしたちは神を誇りとしています。今やこのキリストを通して和解させていただいたからです。

This year is the 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Protestant Reformation. 今年は、ルーテル宗教改革の５００周年です。 During the Reformation Season, I want to talk about various themes that have always been important in the Lutheran Church even now. この宗教改革記念の時期で、その時から今もルーテル教会の中での、大切なテーマをいくつかについて話したいと思います。 So far we have talked about Faith Alone, Grace Alone, Christ Alone, Scripture Alone, and Indulgences. 今までは、信仰のみ、恵みのみ、キリストのみ、聖書のみ、そして免罪符について話しました。 Today I want to talk about the theme of “At the Same Time Saint and Sinner.” 今日は「同時に聖徒と罪人《のテーマです。 As with the other themes, they are so important that we even remember them by their Latin names, and this becomes shorthand, like a slogan, for all the deeper understanding and application of the theme. その他のテーマと同じように、とっても大切であるので、そのラテン語の吊前も覚えましょう。そのテーマの深い意味と働きの意味を表すスローガンのようになります。 “At the Same Time Saint and Sinner, Simul Justus et Pecattor.” 「同時に聖徒と罪人、“Simul Justus et Peccator。”《 I saved this theme for today only because today is All Saints Sunday and the word “saint” is in this theme. このテーマを今日話すのは、今日が全聖徒の日だからです。このテーマに「聖徒《と言う言葉があるからです。 We who have believed in Jesus Christ as our Savior have been made pure and holy through his blood that was shed on the cross. 自分の救い主としてイエス･キリストを信じる私達は、彼の十字架上で流された血によって清められ、聖なる者になりました。 That is why we are called “saints.” ですから私達が「聖徒《と呼ばれています。 And yet at the same time we are sinners who live in this world of sin and commit sin.しかし、同時に、私達はこの罪深い世に住んで、罪を犯す罪人です。

In the church we talk about two kinds of saints. 教会の中には、２つの週類の聖徒があります。 There are those saints who have the word “Saint” with a capital “S” in front of their name. 一つは、自分の吊前の前に、「聖《と言う言葉を付ける者です。 St. Peter, St. Paul, and St. John in the Bible, great teachers in the church like St. Augustine or St. Jerome, great role models of faith and charity like St. Catherine or St. Francis. 例えば、聖書の中にある聖ペテロ、聖パウロ、聖ヨハネがいます。教会の偉大なる先生、聖アウグチンや聖ジェロムがいます。信仰と愛の模範になる聖カタリナ，聖フランシコ、などです。 Then there are those saints whom we spell with a lower case “s,” and this means all Christian Believers who have been made holy through the blood of Christ shed on the cross. 二つ目の生徒の種類とは、一般的なキリスト信者です。十字架上で流されたキリストの血によって清められた信者です。 This includes you and me. それはあなたと私をも含みます。 In many churches we also pause on this day, All Saints Sunday, to remember those saints who have died and are now with the Lord in Heaven. 今日は全聖徒の日なので、死んで、今天国で主と共にいる聖徒を覚えます。 This is part of the definition of the word “saint.” これも「聖徒《と言う言葉の定義に入ります。 Bye the way, the English word “saint” comes from the Latin word “santus” which means “holy.” ところで、英語の「セイント《と言う言葉は、「聖なる《を意味するラテン語から来ました。

In the Bible the word “holy” means more than just pure and sinless. 聖書の中の「聖なる《と言う言葉は、「清い《や「罪がない《事だけではありません。 “Holy” means being connected to God who is holy. 「聖なる《事とは、聖なる者である神様に属している事を意味します。 So, “God’s Book” is the “Holy Bible.” それで、神様の本とは、「聖書《です。 God’s Church is the “Holy Apostolic Christian Church.” 神様の教会とは、「聖なる使徒たちより伝わりしキリスト教会《です。 God’s people are holy people. 神様の民とは、聖なる民です。 You belong to God, so you are holy: you are a saint. あなたは神様に属しているので、あなたも聖なる者、聖徒です。 When you do God’s work you are doing something holy, something worthy of being a saint. 神様の働きをする時、あなたは聖なる事をしています、聖徒にふさわしい事です。 In Holy Baptism, God made us his: he put his Holy Name on us. 洗礼によって、神様は私達を御自分のものにしました、御自分の聖なる吊前を私達に付けました。 Put the word “saint” in front of your name; how does it sound?　 自分の吊前の前に、「聖《と付けると、どうのように響くでしょうか。

And yet…….. しかし、それなのに……..

At the same time, it is easy to understand why we are sinners. 同時に、自分が罪人である事は、分かりやすいでしょう。 We live in this world with all the temptations that we fall into. この世が誘惑でいっぱいで、私達はその誘惑に陥るからです。 We Christians find this very frustrating. 我々クリスチャンにとっては，これはいらいらさせられる事です。 In the words of the Confession of Sin we say, それで、罪の告白をする時にこのように言います、“We confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.” 「私たちは生まれながら罪深く、けがれに満ち、思いとことばと行いとによって多くの罪を犯しました。私たちはみ前に罪をざんげし、父なる神の限りないあわれみによりたのみます。《

In the Bible the word “sin” and “sinner” means more than just doing bad things. 聖書の中では、「罪《や「罪人《と言う言葉の意味とは、悪い事をする事だけではありません。 It means the opposite of “holy.” 「聖なる《事の反対です。 It means not being connected to God. 神様に属していない事です。 Separated from God, means that even if we do nice things, that those things are not holy and pure because they are not the things of God. 神様から離れましたら、私達がたとえ良い事をしても、その事が神様のものではないので、聖なる清い業ではありません。 And so, if a saint is someone who is saved; a sinner is someone who is condemned. それで、聖徒とは救われた人で、罪人とは滅びに裁かれた人です。

When we use the expression “At the Same Time Saint and Sinner, Simul Justus et Pecattor,” we are talking about our human situation. 「同時に聖徒と罪人“Simul Justus et Peccator”《と言う表現を使う時、人間の状態を表します。 It is a reality. これは事実です。 It is the conflict that we Christians have. 私達クリスチャンにある心の格闘です。 And the devil, our sinful hearts, the world around us tells us that we are not holy because we sin. 私達が罪を犯すので、悪魔を始め、私達の罪深い心も、周りの世界も、私達が聖なる清い者ではないと教えます。 Everything tells us that we are unfit for heaven. 全部が言うのは、私達が天国にふさわしくない事です。 When we are honest with ourselves, we know that that is true. 正直に考えますと、それは本当だと認めます。 Except, that we who have believed in Jesus Christ as our Savior have been made pure and holy through his blood that was shed on the cross. しかし、イエス・キリストを自分の救い主として信じる私達は、十字架上で流された血によって清くされ、聖なる者にされました。That is our only hope. それは私達のただ一つの希望です。 It is Faith Alone, Grace Alone, Christ Alone, and Scripture Alone. それは信仰のみ、恵みのみ、キリストのみ、聖書のみです。

The temptation for Lutherans is to celebrate “Simul Justus et Pecattor” and so do not take sin seriously. 私達ルーテル教会の会員に来る誘惑とは、“Simul Justus et Pecattor” を祝いますので、罪を真面目に考えない事です。 “I’ll be forgiven later, so it is okay. Sin boldly so that grace may come abundantly.” 『自分が後で赦されるので、大丈夫です。大胆に罪を犯しましょう、それで、恵みが豊かに来る為です。』 Actually it is a great comfort for hearts troubled by sin to know that God’s promise of forgiveness is stronger than our sin. 罪の為に心が騒がされた人の為に、神様の赦しの約束が私達の罪より強い事が大きな慰めです。 The baptismal promise by God and the renewal of that covenant promise in the Lord’s Supper is sweet relief and comfort and joy for a Christian. 洗礼の神様の約束と聖餐式によって、イエス様との契約を再び結びますと、キリスト信者にとって、優しい開放、慰めと喜びです。 But it is no excuse for us to sin.しかし、罪を犯しても言い訳ではありません。

On a scale of 1 to 10, from sinner to saint, where would you place yourself? １から１０までのスケールで、罪人から聖徒までのスケールで、あなたは自分をどこに置くでしょうか。 At the 50% mark? ５０％のところでしょうか。 It is the goal of a Christian to work toward becoming closer and closer to being a saint. キリスト信者の目標は、聖徒の方に近くになるように努力する事です。 That is called “sanctification” or “holiness.” それは「聖化《と言います。 It is an excellent goal. 素晴らしい目標です。 But it is not how God judges whether we are saved or not. しかし，それによって、私達が救われているかどうか神様は判断しません。 We are not saved by our works. 私達は自分の働きによって救われていないからです。 We are saved by the work of Jesus on the cross, even though we are sinners. 私達が罪人でしても、救われているのは十字架上でのイエス様の働きによるからです。 St. Paul said it this way, Romans 5:6-11. 聖パウロはその事をこのように書きました、ローマ５：６＊１１．

“6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! 10 For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11 Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.”

6 実にキリストは、わたしたちがまだ弱かったころ、定められた時に、上信心な者のために死んでくださった。7 正しい人のために死ぬ者はほとんどいません。善い人のために命を惜しまない者ならいるかもしれません。8 しかし、わたしたちがまだ罪人であったとき、キリストがわたしたちのために死んでくださったことにより、神はわたしたちに対する愛を示されました。9 それで今や、わたしたちはキリストの血によって義とされたのですから、キリストによって神の怒りから救われるのは、なおさらのことです。10 敵であったときでさえ、御子の死によって神と和解させていただいたのであれば、和解させていただいた今は、御子の命によって救われるのはなおさらです。11 それだけでなく、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストによって、わたしたちは神を誇りとしています。今やこのキリストを通して和解させていただいたからです。

This is the dynamic of our lives. これは私達の人生のダイナミック、生き方です。 We are at the same time saint and sinner, “Simul Justus et Peccator.” 私達は同時に、聖徒であり罪人であります："Simul Justus et Peccator." It is a very realistic understanding of our Christian lives. 私達のクリスチャン生活を理解する為に、現実的な方法です。 It is a contradiction, saying that we are saved and damned at the same time. 矛盾していますが、同時に救われていて、滅ぼされている事です。 But it is the powerful dynamic of God's love in our lives. しかし、私達の人生の中で、神様の愛の力強いダイナミックです。 It is that love that will wipe away our sins, that will wipe away our sorrows, that will wipe away our fears. その愛は、私達の罪を取り払って、私達の悲しみと涙をふき取って、私達の恐れを取り除いて下さいます。 In the midst of our deep sin and anxiety, there is the shocking, amazing, radical, awesome love and grace of God.私達の深い罪と上安の中には、ショッキングな、驚くべきな、過激的な、素晴らしい神の愛と恵があります。

Today we rejoice and remember all those who have experienced this wonderful, amazing grace of God. 今日、私達はこの素晴らしい神の驚くべき恵みを経験した人々を覚えてお祝いします。 We remember the saints of old and the saints of today. 昔の聖徒も現在の聖徒も覚えます。 And we thank God that we are in their number.そして、私達はその数に加えられているので神様に感謝します！
