6 さて、使徒たちは集まって、「主よ、イスラエルのために国を建て直してくださるのは、この時ですか」と尋ねた。7 イエスは言われた。「父が御自分の権威をもってお定めになった時や時期は、あなたがたの知るところではない。8 あなたがたの上に聖霊が降ると、あなたがたは力を受ける。そして、エルサレムばかりでなく、ユダヤとサマリアの全土で、また、地の果てに至るまで、わたしの証人となる。」9 こう話し終わると、イエスは彼らが見ているうちに天に上げられたが、雲に覆われて彼らの目から見えなくなった。10 イエスが離れ去って行かれるとき、彼らは天を見つめていた。すると、白い服を着た二人の人がそばに立って、11 言った。「ガリラヤの人たち、なぜ天を見上げて立っているのか。あなたがたから離れて天に上げられたイエスは、天に行かれるのをあなたがたが見たのと同じ有様で、またおいでになる。」
So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
本日、私はマイケルニヤフッド牧師の就任を宣言する者としてここにまいりました。Today I have come here as the one to proclaim the installation of Pastor Michael Nearhood. 今日はちょうど昇天主日です。Today is Ascension Sunday. たったいまニヤフッド先生からメッセージをいただき、恵まれましたが、さらに就任式にあたっての主の昇天からに聞こえる声をいただきたいと思います。We have just been blessed to hear the message by Pastor Nearhood, and now I would like us to hear what the Lord’s Ascension means for his installation. それは、すなわち、しっかりと終えて、そして新しく神の御力によってしっかりと始めるということです。 It is to finish completely and with the help of the Lord to begin completely. 昇天とは、主とちゃんと別れることです。 Ascension is to be separated completely from the Lord.
そして来週は聖霊降臨日です。And next week is Pentecost. 新しい主の息吹に触れて、聖霊の働きを迎える日。It is the day to be touched with the new breath of the Lord and to greet the work of the Holy Spirit. 教会の暦ではその二つの間に一週間おいていますから別々のことと思いがちですが、たいへん緊密につながっています。On the church calendar these two days are only a week apart, and although we tend to think of them separately, they are actually very closely connected. つまり、ひとつのこととして受け止められます。 And so we put them together. 主の昇天と聖霊降臨は一つのことです。The Lord’s Ascension and the Coming of the Holy Spirit are one. というのも主が昇天しなければ、聖霊降臨はないからです。That is, that without the Lord’s Ascension there is no Coming of the Holy Spirit. 聖霊降臨するためには主は昇天しなければならない。For the Holy Spirit to come down, the Lord must rise up to heaven. それはあなたがたの益となる。That is for your benefit. 別れがあって、そして出会いがある。There is both farewell and welcome.
このことから本日のニヤフッド先生の沖縄ルーテル教会牧師としての就任を考えたとき、教団派遣としての任は終えました。 In this same sense, today as Pastor Nearhood is installed as the pastor of Okinawa Lutheran Church, he finishes his work as a pastor sent by the Japan Lutheran Church. しかし同時に、教会が招聘した牧師としての働きが新たに始まるのです。At the same time he newly starts his work as the called pastor of this church. 昇天主日に就任式を迎えたことの意義はここにあるでしょう。This is the significance of having the installation service on Ascension Sunday. 新しく共にあることだ。 Together in a new way.
さて、地上の弟子たちにとりましては不安な別れの時です。For the disciples of Jesus on this earth, it was a farewell willed with anxiety. この別れのとき、弟子たちはもう一つ別のことを考えていました。 At the time of that farewell, the disciples were thinking of something else. 直前の6節です。That is verse 6. いつ国を立て直して下さるのですか、と尋ねています。They asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” つまり、自分たちの望みであるローマからの独立や、イスラエル王国が確立されるのはいつなのかと尋ねているのです。 That is, they asked him when would they have independence from Rome and the Kingdom of Israel restored. そのことが彼らにとっては大問題です。That was a big problem for them. 私たちもいつホッとできるのですか、とか、いつあの問題は解決するのですか、とか、いつになったら教会が心配ないことになるのですか、と問いたがります。 When can we relax, when will our problems be solved, when will the time come when the church does not have to worry any more? 神様に問題の解決を迫る。We press upon God to solve these problems.
さて、その返答はというと、「父がご自分の権威をもってお定めになった時や時期は、あなたがたの知るところではない。」とのことでした。Jesus replied to the disciples’ question in this way: “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority.” つまり、私たちの側の考えや都合は問題になさらないのです。 Which means that it is not a problem about our way of thinking or about our convenience. それよりもむしろ、神の時と神のご計画、神さまの観点に信頼する、そういう生き方をするあなたがたになりなさい。そうおっしゃいます。Rather Jesus said that it is a matter of God’s timing and God’s plan. It is about having a way of living that trusts God’s viewpoint あなたがたの都合をぎゅっと握りしめて神に願うのではなく、神の観点に生きる新しい生き方を悟りなさい。 It is not that we should pray to God while holding tightly onto our own convience, but rather it is to know the way of living in God’s viewpoint. そのために昇天がある。That is the purpose of the Ascension.主は見えなくなる。The Lord can no longer be seen. だがただ見えなくなるだけではない。But it is not just that he can no longer be seen.
続けて、「あなたがたのうえに聖霊が降ると、あなたがたは力を受ける。」とおっしゃった。Jesus continued by saying, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.” すなわち聖霊によって神の力に生きる新しい存在になるということです。 That is to say, you will have a new existence, living in the power of God through the Holy Spirit. 弟子たちがいつなのですか、と問うことには、この先の不安や恐れがあるのでしょう。The disciples asked when this would be because they were anxious and afraid of what lay ahead of them. それを早く取り払ってもらいたい。 They wanted to get rid of that fear as soon as possible. 自分の平安を手放したくないのです。They did not want to lose a grip on their peace of mind. しかし、そのわずかな自分の平安にしがみついているうちは、不安は消えません。 But, even though they had a little bit of peace, their anxiety did not cease. それは閉じた人生を生きることになります。 The result is living a closed life. その結果は悲惨なことで、せっかく手にしているものが、私たちの手の中で朽ち果ててしまうのです。The result is misery, like as if that which we had held in our hands had become like rotten fruit in our hands.
だから、その生き方にサヨウナラをしなさい。Therefore, say “Good-bye, Sayonara” to that way of living.
いま主は見える者としてあなた方の前にいることをやめる。 So quit being a person who sees the Lord standing in front you. そして見えなくなる。 You can no longer see the Lord. それは、あなたがたの心のうちに生きるためであり、あなたがたが霊の力で生きるためであり、また会うことの喜びを生み出すためなのだ。That is in order that the Lord might live in your hearts, that you might live in the power of the Spirit, and that the joy of meeting the Lord might be born. そのために神の観点をあなたがたに与えよう。 That is why Jesus wants to give you God’s viewpoint. それが聖霊降臨。 That is the Coming of the Holy Spirit. ただ別れるだけではない、ただ離れるだけではない、そのあとに神と共に生きるあなたたちの人生を新しく開いてくださるのです。Not just going away, not just parting, it is so that your life might be newly opened, living with God.
主が天に帰られる昇天ということ。 The Ascension is the Lord returning to heaven. それは私たちが主の霊を心にいただいて、再びこの世界と出会うためなのです。 It is that we receive the Spirit of the Lord in our hearts and meet the Lord when he returns to this world. 自分がしがみついているわずかなものを手放して、とらわれを離れ、霊的に新しく出会うことなのです。We let go of that little thing onto which we grasp, we separate from captivity, we have a new spiritual encounter.
ニヤフッド先生が定年を迎えられたことは教会にとってたいへん不安なことだったでしょう。 It is surely a worry for the church that Pastor Nearhood has reached retirement age. 派遣が終わるわけです。 His mission has ended. 私たち教団も先生の後に働いてもらう人材を確定できないもどかしさがありました。 The Japan Lutheran Church office has not found a successor yet. しかし皆さんが祈りのうちに招聘し、先生が応諾されました。 But you prayed and called him and he accepted your call. これは新しい出発です。 This is a new departure. その出発の恵みをいっそう鮮やかにするためにも、いったんしっかりと別れることが必要と思います。 There is freshness in the grace of that departure, and the need to let go of things. 主の昇天のように。It is like the Lord’s Ascension.
もちろん、ニヤフッド先生は亡くなって天に帰られるわけでもありません。Of course it is not that Pastor Nearhood has died and gone to heaven. むしろたいへんお元気そうです。 Rather he seems very active. 見えなくなってしまうわけでもありません。 He has not disappeared しかし一回終えることです。 But he is stopping for a moment. 離れることです。 It is a separation. そして新しいつながりのなかで、また出会い、新しく共に歩んでいただきたいのです。 And in a new bond, we want to meet and walk together anew.
そこで、新しい物語が始まります。 A new story has begun. 使徒言行録です。It is the Book of the Acts of the Apostles. 使徒言行録は第五の福音書と言われます。 The Book of Acts is called “The Fifth Gospel.” それは聖霊と共に生きるあなたの信仰の物語です。 That Book of Acts is your faith story living with the Holy Spirit. 証人としてのあなたたちの教会の物語です。It is your church’s story as witnesses.
ルカでは、天に昇られる主を仰いで、弟子たちは大喜びでエルサレムに帰ったとある。 In the Gospel of Luke, after seeing the Lord ascending into heaven, the disciples returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 別れなのに喜びがあった。Even though there was a farewell, there was joy. ありがとうイエスさまと言って、自分たちに残された使命を心に刻んだことでしょう。 We say “Thank you Jesus” and we have his enduring mission engraved on our hearts. 天に結ばれた喜びです。 It is the joy of being bonded with heaven.
人生には涙があります。 Life has its tears. 不安もあります。 There are worries. だが、教会は天の祝福の命綱で結ばれて、この世の涙も喜びとされるほどの、揺るぎない平安を得ているのです。But the church, having the lifeline of the blessings of heaven, with all the tears and joys of this world, has recieved unshakeable peace and security.
主イエスが、またおいでになる。 The Lord Jesus will come again. このみ言葉は希望です。 This word is hope. この希望を抱いて聖霊に満たされて、これからを歩んでください。 Please keep walking on, holding onto this hope and filled with the Holy Spirit. 教会は、十字架と復活に生きる民です。 The church is the people who live by the cross and resurrection. 恐れや悲しみの中に、神の希望に生きる道を発見している民の歩みなのです。 In the midst of fear and grief, it is the people who travel the living road of God’s hope. 神の祝福をお祈りします。I pray for God’s blessing.
