In today's Gospel lesson, Jesus talks about selecting seats at a party. Jesus gives this advice: "10 But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, 'Friend, move up to a better place.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow guests. 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."
今日の福音書では、イエス様は、宴会の席を選ぶ事について話しました。「14:10 招待を受けたら、むしろ末席に行って座りなさい。そうすると、あなたを招いた人が来て、『さあ、もっと上席に進んでください』と言うだろう。そのときは、同席の人みんなの前で面目を施すことになる。11 だれでも高ぶる者は低くされ、へりくだる者は高められる。《
You know, Sunday morning at church is like a dinner party, especially when there is the Lord's Supper. 日曜日の朝の教会礼拝は、食事会のようです、特に、聖餐式がある時です。Then of course the place of honor is the Altar where Jesus is our Host. その時、一番良い席とは、私達のホストhostであるイエス様がおられる祭壇です。 Jesus is front and center where we can all see him. イエス様は、真(ま)正面(しょうめん)の私たち皆が見える所にいます。 When Jesus speaks, we all want to hear his words clearly: イエス様が話す時、私達は彼の言葉をはっきり聞きたいと思います。 "This is my body given for you for the forgiveness of sins."「これはあなたがたの為に与える私の体である。これは罪の赦しの為にあなた方と多くの人々の為に流す 私の血における新しい契約である。《と。
When we come to the Sunday morning Church Banquet, where do you like to sit? 日曜日の朝の教会の食事会の宴会に来る時、あなたはどこに座るのが好きですか。 Some people enjoy the front row, some enjoy the back row. ある人は一番前の列が好き、ある人は一番後ろの方が好きです。 If we were to say to the people sitting in the back like Jesus did, "Come up and sit in the front," they would probably refuse "the honor." 後ろに座る人に、イエス様の言葉のように、『さあ、もっと上席に進んでください』と言ったら、多分その栄光を断るでしょう。 When I was a kid, we always sat in the back pews which were marked, "Reserved for Families with Small Children." 私が子供の時、私の家族はいつも教会の後ろの列に座りました。その長い椅子にこう書いていた札（ふだ）がありました、「小さい子供のいる家族の為に予約されている《と。 When we kids got older, my mother was sad that she had to sit up closer to the front. 私達子供達が大きくなりますと、私の母にとってちょっと惜しかったのは、教会の前の方に移らなければならない事でした。 But many mothers have told me that they are happy when their kids can sit still through the service and so they can listen to the sermon, etc. しかし多くのお母さん達が言うのは、子供が大きくなって、静かに座る事が出来る時、説教などを聞く事が出来るので、嬉しい事ですと。
My grandfather always sat up in the balcony. 私のおじいさんはいつも礼拝堂の二階の席に座りました。 There were only a few people up there, rather lonely, I thought. そこに座る人が少ないので、寂しそうと私は思いました。 I asked him, "Why do you sit by yourself in the balcony?" 私は彼に聞きました、「どうして独りで二階に座りますか《と。 He replied, "There is a loudspeaker very close to where I sit so I can hear the service and sermon better." 「わしが座る所は、スピーカに近いので、礼拝と説教を良く聞く事が出来るからです《と答えました。 Years later when he lived at our house and couldn't always go to church, we would come home after Sunday School and he would be sitting in his chair, with his portable transistor radio near his ear listening to the Lutheran Hour and then he would pray the Lord's Prayer out loud together with Rev. Oswald Hoffman. 数年後、おじいさんは私達の家に住みました。いつも教会に行く事が出来ませんでした。教会学校の後に家に帰りますと、おじいさんは椅子に座って、耳の当たりにトランシスター・ラジオをあてて、ルーテル・アワーを聞いて、そして、最後に、自分の声を出して、ラジオの牧師と共に主の祈りを祈りました。
He wasn’t IN church, but he was in CHURCH. 教会の中にいませんでしたが、教会にいました。
My favorite place in church is standing behind the pulpit speaking the word of God. 教会の中で私の好きな所とは、説教台の後ろに立って神様の御言葉を語る所です。 For me it is a place of honor, and humility. 私にとっては、光栄の所ですし、けんそんな所もです。 It is also exciting when I know that by the Holy Spirit I have been given a great sermon that speaks the Word of God to the congregation. わくわくする時とは、会衆の皆さんに、神の御言葉を語る素晴らしい説教が聖霊から与えられた時です。 Both Law and Gospel. 律法と福音です。The Law shows not only our sin, but the results of sin in the world, like disease, hate, war, pain, sadness, loneliness, fear, etc. 律法は、私達の罪を表わすのですが、同時に世の罪の結果も表わします、即ち、病気、憎しみ、争い、痛み、悲しみ、孤独、恐れなどです。 And when the Gospel message brings us out of all our human misery, it is miracle of the Holy Spirit. そして、福音のメッセージが人間の苦しみの中から私達を救い出す時、それは聖霊の奇跡です。 The suffering and death of Jesus on the cross shows the love of God toward us. 十字架上のイエス様の苦しみと死が、私達の為の神様の愛を表わします。
And his resurrection shows the love and power of God. そして、復活は、神様の愛と力を現します。 That means forgiveness, healing, hope and peace. それで、赦しと癒しと希望と平和があります。
Jesus talks about choosing seats. イエス様は席を選ぶ事について話しました。 It is important to choose wisely. 知恵を持って選ぶのは大切です。 Listen to this story about two of Jesus’ disciples. イエス様の弟子の２人のストーリを聞いて下さい。Mark 10:35-40. マルコ10:35-40です。
35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. "Teacher," they said, "we want you to do for us whatever we ask."
36 "What do you want me to do for you?" he asked.
37 They replied, "Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory."
38 "You don't know what you are asking," Jesus said. "Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?"
39 "We can," they answered.
Jesus said to them, "You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, 40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared."
35 ゼベダイの子ヤコブとヨハネが進み出て、イエスに言った。「先生、お願いすることをかなえていただきたいのですが。《
36 イエスが、「何をしてほしいのか《と言われると、
37 二人は言った。「栄光をお受けになるとき、わたしどもの一人をあなたの右に、もう一人を左に座らせてください。《
38 イエスは言われた。「あなたがたは、自分が何を願っているか、分かっていない。このわたしが飲む杯を飲み、このわたしが受ける洗礼を受けることができるか。《
39 彼らが、「できます《と言うと、イエスは言われた。「確かに、あなたがたはわたしが飲む杯を飲み、わたしが受ける洗礼を受けることになる。
40 しかし、わたしの右や左にだれが座るかは、わたしの決めることではない。それは、定められた人々に許されるのだ。《
The time of Jesus’ glory was when he was crowned with a crown of thorns as King of the Jews on the cross. イエス様が栄光を受ける時とは、十字架上で茨の冠でユダヤ人の王としている時です。For us and for our salvation, Jesus chose the seat of the cross. 私達の救いの為に、イエス様は十字架の席を選びました。 That was the time of his bitter cup of suffering and baptism into death. 苦い(にが)苦しい(くる)杯(さかずき)を飲み、死の洗礼を受けた時です。 And in his glory, on his right and left were the two thieves. 栄光を受ける時、イエス様の右と左には、２人の泥棒でした。
And yet, both James and John, and we too, must join with Jesus in his death so that we can join him in his resurrection. それなのに、ヤコブとヨハネも私達も、イエス様と共に死ななければなりません、それは、イエス様と共に復活する為です。 We too have a baptism and a cup to drink, but they bring us eternal life and joy. 私達にも受ける洗礼があり、飲む杯がありますが、それらが私達に永遠の命と喜びを与えます。

Jesus calls us to come up to where he is. イエス様は私達皆をご自分のそばに来るように招かれます。 He calls us to come to his Table. ご自分の食卓の所に招きます。 He is the Host and gives us the Holy Sacrament.彼はその宴会の会長で、私達に聖餐を下さいます。 He loves us and bestows on us the honor of being his friends, of being his brothers and sisters, and of being children of the Heavenly Father. 私達を愛して、私達に栄光を与えます、即ち、ご自分の友として、天の父の子供達として、ご自分の兄弟姉妹としての栄光です。
My favorite place in church is at the altar. 私にとって、教会の中で一番好きな所とは、祭壇の所です。 But Jesus is always with us where ever we are, and so we can be happy where ever we are. しかし、私達がどこにいましても、イエス様はいつも私達と共にいますので、どこにいても、幸せです。 We are always honored that Christ shares his presence with us! キリストが私達と共にいてくださいますので、私達はいつもその栄光をいただきます。
