Luke 7:1-10
[The faith of the Roman centurion]
After he had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. Now a centurion had a servant who was sick and at the point of death, who was highly valued by him. When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy to have you do this for him, for he loves our nation, and he is the one who built us our synagogue.”
And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed. For I too am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.” And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant well.

7:1イエスは、民衆にこれらの言葉をすべて話し終えてから、カファルナウムに入られた。 7:2 ところで、ある百人隊長に重んじられている部下が、病気で死にかかっていた。 7:3 イエスのことを聞いた百人隊長は、ユダヤ人の長老たちを使いにやって、部下を助けに来てくださるように頼んだ。 7:4 長老たちはイエスのもとに来て、熱心に願った。「あの方は、そうしていただくのにふさわしい人です。 7:5 わたしたちユダヤ人を愛して、自ら会堂を建ててくれたのです。」
7:6 そこで、イエスは一緒に出かけられた。ところが、その家からほど遠からぬ所まで来たとき、百人隊長は友達を使いにやって言わせた。「主よ、御足労には及びません。わたしはあなたを自分の屋根の下にお迎えできるような者ではありません。 7:7 ですから、わたしの方からお伺いするのさえふさわしくないと思いました。ひと言おっしゃってください。そして、わたしの僕をいやしてください。 7:8 わたしも権威の下に置かれている者ですが、わたしの下には兵隊がおり、一人に『行け』と言えば行きますし、他の一人に『来い』と言えば来ます。また部下に『これをしろ』と言えば、そのとおりにします。」
7:9 イエスはこれを聞いて感心し、従っていた群衆の方を振り向いて言われた。「言っておくが、イスラエルの中でさえ、わたしはこれほどの信仰を見たことがない。」 7:10 使いに行った人たちが家に帰ってみると、その部下は元気になっていた。
Jesus was surprised. イエス様は驚きました。We read in today’s Gospel, ‘When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.”’ 福音書の日課を読みます。｢7:9 イエスはこれを聞いて感心し、従っていた群衆の方を振り向いて言われた。「言っておくが、イスラエルの中でさえ、わたしはこれほどの信仰を見たことがない。」 There are other surprises in this Gospel story for us to look at today also. この福音書の話しの中には、ほかの驚くべきものもあります。
The first surprise is that the man who requested help from Jesus was not a Jew. 最初の驚くべきものとは、イエス様の助けを頼んだ人がユダヤ人ではなかった事です。He was a Roman soldier, a centurion. ローマの兵隊、百人隊長でした。 Usually Jews thought that their religion was only for the Jews. 普通、ユダヤ人達が考えたのは、自分の宗教はユダヤ人だけの為だと思う事です。 Salvation and God’s help was only for themselves. 救いと神様の助けは、自分達だけの為だと思いました。 There are some prayers and stories in the Old Testament that show God’s love for everyone, but usually Jews thought that only they were God’s Chosen Nation. 旧約聖書の中には、すべての国の人々の為の神様の愛を表す祈りや話しがありますが、普通のユダヤ人達は、自分達だけが神様の選ばれた民だと思いました。 And so it surprising in this story that the elders of the Jews pleaded with Jesus to help this foreigner, a Gentile. それで、今日の話しの中で、そのユダヤ人の長老達がイエス様の所に行き、その外人の為に熱心に願った事は驚くべきです。They said, “He is worthy to have you do this for him, for he loves our nation, and he is the one who built us our synagogue.” 言いました、「あの方は、そうしていただくのにふさわしい人です。わたしたちユダヤ人を愛して、自ら会堂を建ててくれたのです。」 This too is surprising that a foreigner would love the Jews, even respecting their religion enough to build a synagogue. これも不思議です。外人がユダヤ人を愛する事、会堂を立ててくれるほど彼等の宗教を大事にする事です。 He may have done it as PR, community relations, but I think he honestly did love the Jews. 彼はPRの為に、兵隊と町の人々の良い関係を作る為にしたかも知れませんが、彼が本当にユダヤ人を愛したと私は思います。 This is shown by the concern and love that he had for his servant. それは、自分の部下への関心と愛の中に表されていると思います。 This is surprising because this servant was his slave. 驚くべき事は、このしもべとは、奴隷であるからです。 The Greek New Testament uses the word “slave,” which most modern translations weaken to “servant.” ギリシャ語の新約聖書の言葉は｢奴隷｣です。多くの現代的な聖書翻訳は、弱い言葉である｢下部（しもべ）｣と言います。 It is surprising because slaves were like cattle or tools, things that could be used and discarded. 驚くのは、その時、奴隷は家畜や道具にすぎなく、使って捨てる事が出来るものと思われていたからです。 But this army officer was worried about his slave and wanted to get help for him. しかし、この兵隊の百人隊長は、自分の奴隷の事を心配して、助けてもらいたいと思いました。
After the elders of the Jews pleaded with Jesus, Jesus went with them towards the house of the centurion. ユダヤ人達の長老達はイエス様にお願いして、イエス様は百人隊長の家に向かって行きました。 This would be surprising for any Jew but Jesus. イエス様以外の人でしたら、その行動に驚きます。 Jews did not want to have any contact with an unclean foreigner. 何故ならば、ユダヤ人は、汚れている異邦人と接触（せっしょく）したくないのです。 They would not want to enter his house because then they would have to do a special cleansing ritual afterwards. 異邦人の家に入りましたら、後でめんどくさい清めの儀式をしなければならないからです。 Some Jews would be surprised that Jesus would not fear ritual uncleanness. イエス様がその宗教的な汚れを恐れないので、あるユダヤ人は驚くでしょう。 But you and I are not surprised. しかし、あなたと私は全然驚かないでしょう。 Jesus talked to sinners and tax collectors and prostitutes and he told the parable of the Good Samaritan. イエス様は罪人と徴税人と売春婦と話したり、良いサマリア人の例え話を話しました。 Jesus heard about a man who was dying and went to help him. 病気で死にかかっている人の事を聞いたので、イエス様はその人を助ける為に行きました。 Jesus did not care about the man’s social status, his nationality, or even his religion. その人の社会的な地位、彼の国籍、彼の宗教をもかまいません。 This is one of the most surprising aspects of God’s love. これこそは、神様の愛の一番びっくりするところです。 God loves sinners. 即ち、神様は罪人を愛する事です。 Likewise, Jesus did not help the centurion because he was a good man who loved the Jews and built their synagogue. 同じように、イエス様がその百人隊長を助ける理由とは、彼が良い人でユダヤ人を愛して彼等の会堂を建てたからではありません。 That was nice of him to do that, but it did not make him worthy of Jesus’ help. 彼がそれをしたので親切ですが、それでイエス様の助けにふさわしくなる訳ではありません。The Jewish elders were wrong. 長老達は間違いました。 Jesus helped him because the servant was sick. イエス様が彼を助けたのは、しもべが病気だからです。
Then comes the part where even Jesus is surprised. 今度、イエス様ご自身が驚きます。 The centurion sent messengers to tell Jesus not to come to his house, saying, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed.” 百人隊長は友達を使いに送って言わせました、「主よ、御足労には及びません。私はあなたを自分の屋根の下にお迎えできるような者ではありません。ですから、私の方からお伺(うかが)いするのさえ ふさわしくないと思いました。ひと言おっしゃってください。 そして、私の僕をいやしてください。｣ Here we see two things: ここに２つの事を見ます: his humility and his faith in Jesus. その人のイエス様に対するけんそんと彼のイエス様に対する信仰です。 Jesus saw his faith. ‘When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.”’ イエス様はその信仰を見ました。イエスはこれを聞いて感心し、従っていた群衆の方を振り向いて言われた。「言っておくが、イスラエルの中でさえ、わたしはこれほどの信仰を見たことがない。」
Christianity is filled with surprises: キリスト教の中にサプライズがいっぱいです。 There is Christmas, that God would become a human person; 先ず、クリスマス:神様は人間になる事： Easter, that God would die on the cross and then rise on the third day; イースター：神様は十字架上で死んで３日目に甦る事;and Pentecost, that the Holy Spirit would bring faith and power and authority to proclaim the Gospel to the whole world. そしてペンテコステ：聖霊は信仰を起こして、全世界に福音を述べ伝える為の力と権威を与える事です。 There is the surprise that in Jesus Christ, God would love us, have mercy on us, and would forgive our us sin. イエス様によって、神様が私達を愛して、あわれんで、私達の罪を赦す事は驚くべきことです。 The world is surprised when Christians really do practice what they preach. クリスチャン達が本当に説教するように行動する時、この世の人々は驚きます。 The world is not surprised, but disappointed when Christians do not practice what they preach. クリスチャン達が説教するように行動しない時、この世の人々は驚きません。しかし、がっかりするでしょう。 Personally, sometimes I am surprised, even amazed, that God has not given up on a sinner like me. 個人的に言うと、神様が罪人である私をあきらめていないので、驚きます。 Actually, God has kept his promise which he made when I was baptized. 実は、私が洗礼を受けた時に神様が約束した事を神様は守りました。 In baptism God promised to be my Father, my Brother and Redeemer, and my Guide and Forgiver. 洗礼の時、神様が約束したのは私達の父になる事、私の御兄さんと贖い主になる事、又、私のガイドと赦し主になる事です。 That is God’s promise for you, too. この神様の約束は、あなたの為にもです。 Everyday God surprises us with miracles of love and forgiveness and acceptance and peace. 毎日、神様の愛と赦しと和解と平和の奇跡は私達を驚かします。
