Last week in the sermon I talked about three donkeys. Today I want to talk about three trees. Or maybe it is four trees, or maybe they are all the same tree.
Today let’s start by talking about the Christmas tree. 今日、先ず、クリスマス・ツリーについて話しましょう。 As a Christmas decoration it has been used at least since the days of Martin Luther. クリスマスの飾りとして、マルティン・ルターの時代から使われています。In winter when most flowers and other vegetation is dormant, the fir or pine tree is green and beautiful. 冬には、多くの花や植物が眠っていますが、松やモミの木は緑で覆われていてきれいです。 Luther thought of the Christmas tree as a symbol of the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden. ルダーはクリスマスの木を、エデンの園の命の木のように考えました。 The Christmas tree lights, or the candles that Martin Luther used, represent the angels who sang over the fields of Bethlehem the night Jesus was born. クリスマス・ツリーの電気の光、又ルターが使ったロウソクの光は、イエス様が生まれた夜にベツレヘムの野原で歌っていた天使達を表します。 The star on the top of the tree represents the star seen by the Wisemen who were guided to Bethlehem to worship the Newborn King. 木のてっぺんの星は、生まれた王様を拝む為に博士達を導いた星です。 Some of the ornaments have meanings, some are just pretty. ある飾りには意味がありますが、他の飾りはただきれいです。
Tree #1. 第一の木。
John the Baptist said that the faith and religion of the people of Israel were like a tree that produced bad, rotten fruit, and so God would cut down that tree and destroy it.バプテスマのヨハネは、イスラエルの人々の信仰と宗教は、腐っている果物を結ぶ木のようであるので、神様はその木を切り倒して破壊すると言いました。 Matthew 3:10, “Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” マタイ3:10、「斧は既に木の根元に置かれている。良い実を結ばない木はみな、切り倒されて火に投げ込まれる。」
John would preach the same way to us today, also. It is a warning for us, too. ヨハネは、私達にも同じように説教するでしょう。私達にとっての警告になります。 But John also had a message of hope. しかし、ヨハネには、希望のメッセージもありました。The Messiah was coming.メシアが来ます。 The Holy Spirit was coming, too.聖霊も来ます。 This would be a Baptism that would purify and give salvation.このバプテスマは人々を清めて、救います。
Tree #2. 第二の木。
Isaiah was a prophet of God. イザヤは、神様の預言者でした。 He foresaw the destruction of Israel and he also saw the restoration of God’s people. 彼はイスラエルの破壊をも、神様の民の復活をも見ました。He compared Israel to a tree that had already been cut down. イスラエルをもう既に切り倒された木に例えました。 He said, Isaiah 11:1, “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.” 言いました、イザヤ１１：１、「エッサイの株(かぶ)からひとつの芽(め)が萌(も)えいで／その根(ね)からひとつの若枝(わかえだ)が育(そだ)ち｣と。 Jesse is the name of King David’s father, and so Isaiah prophesied the future restoration of the Kingdom of Israel. エッサイと言う人は、ダビデ王の父だったので、イスラエルの王国の将来の復活を予言しました。The destruction of the Kingdom was because of the evil and the unbelief of Israel. その国の滅びの理由とは、イスラエルの悪や不信仰の為でした。 This punishment would be carried out by Babylon. バビロンによってその罰をイスラエルに行います。 But Isaiah also knew the love of God. しかし、イザヤは神様の愛をも知りました。 God would not forget his promises to Abraham and to David: 神様は御自分のアブラハムとダビデへの約束を忘れません： the promise of land and the promise of descendents numbering like the stars of the night. それは土地の約束と夜の星の数のような子孫の約束でした。
Our text reads “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse.” 私達のテキストは言います、「エッサイの株(かぶ)からひとつの芽(め)が萌(も)えいで｣と。 A “stump” is that part of a tree that is left in the ground after a tree is cut down. この「株」とは、切り倒した木の地面に残された幹(みき)の部分です。 Because the roots remain, there is still life in that stump. その木の根が残っているので、その株には生命が残っています。And oftentimes, new shoots will sprout from the stump and a whole new tree will grow in the place of the one cut down. それで、その株から新しい芽が出て、新しい木が切り倒した木の代わりに生えて来ます。 This is what Isaiah is talking about. これはイザヤの話です。 This tree is “Jesse.” この木とは「エッサイ」です。 Jesse is the name of the father of King David. エッサイとはダビデ王の父の名前です。 At the time of the Babylonian Exile when the Israelites were taken away as slaves, the kingdom of David was destroyed. バビロニアの捕囚(ほしゅう)の時、イスラエルの民がバビロニアに奴隷として連れて行かれたとき、ダビデの王国が滅びました。 It was cut down. 切り倒されました。 But Isaiah foretells that a new king will arise in Israel who will be a descendent of King David. しかし イザヤが予言したのは、ダビデ王の子孫の一人が、イスラエルの中で新しい王として現れる事を予言しました。
This new King is Jesus Christ. この新しい王とはキリストです。 The Gospel of Matthew makes it very clear that Jesus was born of Mary the wife of Joseph who is a direct descendent of King David. マタイの福音書がはっきり言うのは、イエス様がダビデ王の子孫であるヨセフの妻マリアによって生まれた事です。 The Christmas Angles tell the Shepherds that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the City of David. 又、クリスマスの天使が羊飼い達に告げたのは、イエス様がダビデの町のベツレヘムで生まれた事です。 Jesus is the branch from the stump of Jesse. イエス様はエッサイの株の芽です。 And in this sense, Jesus was a tree, the original Christmas Tree. この意味ではイエス様御自身は木です、最初のクリスマス・ツリーでした。
We usually connect Jesus with another tree, however: 普通に考えますと、イエス様を別の木につけられていると思います。 the tree of the cross. それは十字架の木です。 Jesus was hung on the cross, not with care like a precious ornament, but with savage brutality and hate. きれいな飾りのように、イエス様がその十字架の木につけられないで、ひどい乱暴と憎しみによって、その木につけられました。 He was hung there with all the hate and sin of the world. 世のすべての憎しみと罪が彼の上に掛けられたのです。 There were no lights, but rather darkness. 光よりも闇がありました。 There was no shining star at the top, but a sign that said, “Jesus of Nazareth, King of Jews.” 木の上に輝く星はありませんでしたが、一つの書き札がありました、「これはユダヤ人の王ナザレのイエスだ」と。 And so it was official that this tree was the branch from the stump of Jesse. それで正式的には、この木こそがエッサイの株の芽でした。The life of this tree was cut down. この木の命が切り倒されました。 But on the third day, like a new branch,he rose again. しかし３日目に新しい枝のように甦りました。 Like a new sprout with new life, bearing fruit of peace, love, forgiveness, and eternal salvation. そして、新しい命を持つ芽のように、その木には実がありました。即ち、平和、愛、赦しと永遠の救いです。
And so at Christmas, I have more respect for the Christmas tree. それでクリスマスに、クリスマス・ツリーに対して尊敬が私にはあります。 Since it reminds us of the Cross of Jesus, it also reminds us of our sin and shame. イエス様の十字架を思い起こすので、私達の罪と恥をも思い起こします。But the green branches remind us of the resurrection and new life in Jesus. しかし、その緑の枝はイエス様の復活やイエス様による新しい命をも思い起こします。 And so our sin is covered up through faith in Christ.ですから、私達の罪がキリストによる信仰によって隠されています。The tree and Jesus give light in the midst of dark December. その木もイエス様も暗い１２月に光を与えます。 As the branch of Jesse it reminds us of the promise of God, and that Jesus is the fulfillment of that promise. エッサイの枝として神様の約束を思い出して、そして、その約束の成就はイエス様である事を思い出します。 It reminds us of the tree of the cross, and the new life of the resurrection, and the tree of Life in the Garden of Eden. これは十字架の木を指しますし、復活の新しい命をも指し、エデンの園の命の木を指します。 The star and the lights and various ornaments have various meanings and various memories. その星と電気と飾りには、色々の意味と思い出があります。 The tree is a sign of hope and so a source of peace and joy and grace and love in our Lord Jesus Christ. この木は希望のしるしですので、平和と喜びと恵みと主イエス・キリストの愛を私たちに運びます。
