What does God look like? 神様はどのように見えるでしょうか？ No one has ever seen God, except in visions and in the Person of Jesus Christ. 誰も神様を見た事がありません。イエス･キリストによって、又幻によって見る事以外です。 But what does God look like? しかし、神様はどのように見えるでしょうか？ It is something beyond the imagination of humans, I am sure. 確かに、人間の想像を越える形でしょう。 But we humans need something to see or something to imagine when we think about something. しかし、私達人間が何かについて考える時、何かを見たり、想像する事が必要です。Let’s list some of the common images of God: 幾つかの神様のイメージがあります： An old man with a great white beard sitting on a throne. 王座に座る、白いひげをはやしている老人。 A great white, blinding light. まぶしい大きな白い光。 Bolts of lightening to punish sinners. 罪人を罰する雷。 A judge. 裁判官。 The architect of the universe. 宇宙の設計士。 A shepherd leading his sheep. 羊を導く羊飼い。 A mother hen taking care of her chicks. 雛を守る雄鶏。 A friend to walk next to us. 自分のとなりを歩く友達。 A cool breeze or a gentle wind. 涼しいさわやかな風。The force of the universe that is in everything. すべての物の中に存在するフォースの力。 Pure energy. 純粋なエネルギー。 In pagan religions, idols try to capture the image of God as a person, an animal like a strong bull or lion or dragon, a person with many arms to show that God can do many things. 異教で神様のイメージを表す遇像があります：人間やライオンや牡牛や竜のような強い働物や神様が何でも出来るので手と腕が沢山ある人のような遇像です。 Since God is infinite, we cannot grasp the total form of God. 神様が無限のものであるので、私達は神様の完全な形をつかむ事が出来ません。
Genesis Chapter One Verse 26, 26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness.” 創世記１:２６、｢1:26 神は言われた。『我々にかたどり、我々に似せて、人を造ろう。』｣
But, people try to make a god in their own image. しかし、人間は自分達のイメージによって神の形を作ろうと思います。 That is to say, they create a god that they can control. 即ち、自分がコントロールする事が出来る神を作ろうと思います。 This is a god that will grant my every desire. この神は私のすべての欲しいものを下さいます。 That will permit every behavior of mine. 私の振る舞いを何でも認めます。 That will destroy my enemies both national and personal. 私のすべての敵を破壊します。 That will be my personal servant. 私個人の奴隷になります。 That will give me health and wealth and happiness.私に健康と富と幸せを下さいます。
Or people make themselves god. 又は、人間が自分自身を神にします。 It is a type of idol worship. これは遇像礼拝の一種です。 They think they are the center of the universe. 自分が宇宙の中心のように考えます。 I am god. 私は神である。 Everyone should obey me. すべての人が私に従うべき。 The world exists to give me happiness. この世の存在理由とは、私の幸せの為だ。 I can do anything I want to because everything I do is permitted by me. 私が何でも好きなように出来るのは、私の振る舞いが私に赦されているからだ。 I decide what is right and wrong. 何が正しいか、何が悪いか、私が決める。
Perhaps this is the basic sin: making yourself god. これこそが根本的な罪でしょう。即ち、自分自身を神にする事でしょう。 Genesis Chapter Three explains that the root of sin is when people want to decide for themselves what is right and wrong, and what is good and bad. 創世記３章が説明するのは、罪の本質です。即ち、人間が自分の為に、何が正しいか何が間違っているか、何が良いか何か悪いかを決める時です。 When people want to decide without God it is like eating the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. 神様を無視にして ものを決める事は、善悪の知識の木から実を食べる事のようです。 On that day people start to die because they are living without God. この日から死ぬのは、神様から離れて生きるからです。 Do not blame Satan and the Snake. サタンやその蛇に責任を負わせないで下さい。 Do not blame Adam and Eve. アダムとエバを責めないで下さい。 When given the chance we do the same.チャンスがある時､私達は同じようにするからです。
God makes the decision of what is right and wrong, and what is good and bad. 何が正しいか何が間違っているか、何が良いか何か悪いかの事は神が決めました。 As Genesis 2:16-17 says, “And the LORD God commanded the man, ‘You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.’” For many people, this is the image of God, and the form that they will see on Judgment Day. 創世記２：１６-１７が言います。2:16 「主なる神は人に命じて言われた。『園のすべての木から取って食べなさい。2:17 ただし、善悪の知識の木からは、決して食べてはならない。食べると必ず死んでしまう。』」多くの人々の為に、これは神様のイメージで、そして裁きの日に、この神様の形を見ます。
And then God made another decision of what is right and wrong, and what is good and bad. 何が正しいか何が間違っている、何が良いか何か悪いかの事を神様はもう一度決めました。 It is the decision of love and mercy and forgiveness and reconciliation. 今度は愛と憐れみと赦しと和解を決めました。 To show that love, God took on the form of something that humans could see and understand. その愛を表す為に、神様は、人間が理解する事が出来る形を取りました。 God was born in Bethlehem as a helpless baby. 神様はベツレヘムで力の無い赤ちゃんとして産まれました。 Jesus grew up to be a Holy Spirit-filled charismatic Messiah who proclaimed the love of God. 成長したイエス様は、聖霊に満たされたカリスマ的な、神様の愛を述べ伝えるメシヤになりました。 Through signs and miracles he showed the form of God that loves us and cares about us. 奇跡とほかのしるしによって、私達を愛して、私達の事を大事にする神様の形を表して下さいました。 It was a form that people could see and hear and touch, and that could speak to and reach out to and touch people. この形ならば、人々は見たり、聞いたり、触ったりする事が出来、又、この形で、神様は人々に話したり、手を伸ばしたり、人を触ったりする事が出来ました。
And then Jesus took the form which we see on the cross. そして、イエス様は、十字架上で見られた形を取りました。 When he took the sins of the world upon himself, he took the form of every sinner. イエス様が、御自分の上に世の罪を取る時、すべての罪人の形をも取りました。 He became the criminal. イエス様は犯罪人になりました。 He became the murderer, 又、人殺し、the sinner, 罪人、the thief, 泥坊、 the gossip, 噂話を言う人、 the liar, 嘘つき、the pervert, へんたい、the blasphemer, 神を冒涜する人、the adulterer. 姦通する人などになりました。 He took my form. 即ち、私の形を取りました。 He took your form. あなたの形も取りました。 He took the form of the person on the other side of the room. 部屋の向こうの人の形も取りました。 He took the form of your friend and of your enemy. あなたの友達の形も、あなたの敵の形をも取りました。 And taking that form, he died to forgive and recreate and resurrect you and me. そして、この形を取ってあなたと私を赦して、再創造して復活させました。
Philippians Chapter Two talks about the “transfiguration” of Jesus.
6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death — even death on a cross!
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
フィリピの信者への手紙２章は、イエス様の『変容』について話しました。
2:6 キリストは、神の身分でありながら、神と等しい者であることに固執しようとは思わず、2:7 かえって自分を無にして、僕の身分になり、人間と同じ者になられました。人間の姿で現れ、2:8 へりくだって、死に至るまで、それも十字架の死に至るまで従順でした。
2:9 このため、神はキリストを高く上げ、あらゆる名にまさる名をお与えになりました。2:10 こうして、天上のもの、地上のもの、地下のものがすべて、イエスの御名にひざまずき、2:11 すべての舌が、「イエス・キリストは主である」と公に宣べて、父である神をたたえるのです。
So, what does God look like? それで、神様はどのように見えるでしょうか。 How does Jesus look when he comes to us today?イエス様が今日私達の所に来られる時、どのように見えるでしょうか。 He comes in Word and Sacrament. 御言葉と聖礼典によってこられます。 Here we can see and hear and touch and taste our Lord. ここで、私達は私達の主を見たり、聞いたり、触ったり、味をみたりする事が出来ます。 He comes in love that moves our hearts and strengthens our bodies. 私達の心を動かして、私達の体を強くする愛を持って来られます。 We might not know what the face of Jesus looks like, but we know what his heart looks like. 私達はイエス様の顔がどう見えるか分からなくても、私達はイエス様の心がどのようなものであるか分かります。God is love. 神様は愛です。
