GOSPEL LESSON: Matthew 11:28–30
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
福音書 マタイ 11:28～30
28 「疲れた者、重荷を負う者は、だれでもわたしのもとに来なさい。休ませてあげよう。29 わたしは柔和で謙遜な者だから、わたしの軛を負い、わたしに学びなさい。そうすれば、あなたがたは安らぎを得られる。30 わたしの軛は負いやすく、わたしの荷は軽いからである。」
Today’s Gospel Reading is pure gospel. 今日の福音書の日課は、純粋な福音です。 It is sweet good news. 喜ばしい良い知らせです。 To millions and millions of Christians, it has given hope and comfort and peace and strength and joy and rest. 昔から多くのキリスト信者達に、希望と慰めと平和と力と喜びと安心を与えました。 “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” 「疲れた者、重荷を負う者は、だれでも私のもとに来なさい。休ませてあげよう。」 Everyone has burdens. すべての人々には重荷があります。 Everyone has baggage. 皆には荷物があります。 Everyone has work or responsibilities. 仕事や責任があります。 There are worries, 心配を始め、sickness, 病気、 pain, 痛み、 sorrow, 悲しみ、 regret, 後悔、fear. 恐れがあります。 The words of Jesus are an invitation to find rest and peace. イエス様の言葉は、やすみと平和を得るためへの招きです。
But the words of Jesus are drowned out by the empty promises of this world. しかし、この世のやかましくて空しい約束があるので、イエス様の言葉が聞こえません。Rather than eternal peace, they offer all sorts of temporary relief or diversion. 永遠の平和の代わりに、一時的な解放や展開しかありません。 Not all of those things are sinful. そのものが別に罪深い訳ではありません。 The beauty and good things of this world are gifts of God. この世の綺麗なものと良いものは神様からの恵みです。 Friends and medicine help us in bad times. 友達や薬によって助けられます。 But sometimes we have so much worry and pain that nothing seems to help. しかし、ある時、心配とか痛みがひどくて、何も役に立たないみたいです。 Hopelessness can seem like hell. 失望は地獄のようです。And it is hell when we give up on Jesus. イエス様を諦めましたら、それは地獄です。
The reason the words of Jesus are pure gospel is because Jesus is with us. He says, “Come to me.” イエス様の言葉が純粋な福音であるのは、イエス様が私達と共にいるからです。「わたしのもとに来なさい」と言われます。 Jesus understands the responsibility of our burdens. イエス様は私達の問題の責任を知るからです。 He shares our pain. 私達の痛みを感じるからです。 He shares our troubles. イエス様は私達の問題が分かります。 It is sweet good news because Jesus took upon himself the sin of the world, the pain of the world, and the burdens of the world when he died on the cross. これが素晴らしい良い知らせであるのは、イエス様は御自分の上にこの世の罪を取って、世の痛みを取って、世の重荷を取って十字架上で死にました。 He had all the burdens upon himself, but when he arose on Easter, he left all those sins behind. 御自分の上にその重荷がありましたが、イースターの朝に甦った時、その罪を全部後ろに捨てました。They are dead. その罪が死にました。 When he arose on Easter, he had healing and life. イースターに復活した時、癒しと命がありました。
Psalm 23 says the same thing: 詩篇２３篇は同じ事をいいます： “The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul.” 「主はわたしの牧者であって、わたしには乏しいことがない。主はわたしを緑の牧場に伏させ、いこいのみぎわに伴われる。主はわたしの魂をいきかえらせ」。
Jesus said, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” イエス様は言われました、「私は柔和(にゅうわ)で謙遜(けんそん)な者だから、私の軛(くびき)を負(お)い、私に学びなさい。そうすれば、あなたがたは安らぎを得られる。 私の軛は負いやすく、私の荷は軽いからである。」We will find rest for our souls when we find the yoke of Jesus. イエス様のくびきを見つける時、魂の安らぎを見つけます。 Do you know what a yoke is? くびきが分かりますか。 A yoke is a type of collar. It is part of a harness.首のカラーの一種です。If you want a horse or an ox to pull a plow or a wagon, you have to connect the animal to the cart somehow. 鋤やワゴンを馬や牛に引っ張る時、その働物をそのワゴンやカートにつながなければなりません。 This is done with the harness. つなぐ為にくびきを使います。 The yoke goes over the neck and shoulders of the ox so that its whole strength can pull the wagon. 牛の首と肩にかけますので、その牛の力が全部をそのワゴンを引っ張る力になります。 The yoke needs to be the right size for the animal, not too big so it slips off, not to small so that chokes the ox, not rough so that it will cut into the skin. くびきのサイズが大切です。大きいと落ちるでしょう。小さいと牛の首を絞めるでしょう。スムーズでなければ、牛の皮膚を切るでしょう。 If the yoke is just the perfect fit, it will be comfortable and so it will be easy to pull the wagon. 丁度良いフィットでしたら、楽になり、簡単に負い易くて、簡単にそのワゴンを引っ張る事が出来ます。 That is what Jesus means when he says that his yoke is easy. イエス様が「私の軛は負いやすく」と言われる時、その意味です。 He makes it easier for us to handle our problems in life. イエス様の助けによって、私達の人生の問題がより易く扱います。 And when he helps us, the burdens become lighter. そして、イエス様の助けによって、私達の重荷がより軽くなります。
It is true. 本当です。 I have found that prayer makes my problems lighter. 私の経験ですが、祈りますと、私の問題が軽くなります。 When I bring my problems to Jesus in prayer, he helps me. 祈りによって私の問題をイエス様の所に持って行きますと、イエス様は私を助けて下さいます。 I have found that singing helps. 又、歌を歌う事も役に立つと私には分かります。 A song is a prayer, and it is reminder of God’s love. 歌は祈りですし、神様の愛を思い起こすものです。 That is why we should memorize a verse or two of our favorite hymns and praise songs. ですから、私達が好きな賛美歌や聖歌の一節や二節を覚えて置くべきです。 Prayers and songs are like yokes that connect us with Jesus. 祈りと歌は、私達をイエス様につなぐくびきです。 Worship is great, too. 礼拝も素晴らしいです。 In the confession and absolution, we lay down and get rid of the old sins that burden us. 罪の告白と赦しによって、その古い罪の重荷を下ろして捨てます。 In the Lord’s Supper, we get strength for our faith and daily life with Jesus. 聖餐式によって、信仰の為の力と毎日のイエス様との人生の力をももらいます。
There are many wonderful Bible passages to memorize, let’s memorize this one! 暗記すれば素晴らしい聖句が沢山あります。今日の福音書の箇所をも覚えましょう。 “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” 「疲れた者、重荷を負う者は、だれでもわたしのもとに来なさい。休ませてあげよう。わたしは柔和で謙遜な者だから、わたしの軛を負い、わたしに学びなさい。そうすれば、あなたがたは安らぎを得られる。わたしの軛は負いやすく、わたしの荷は軽いからである。」
