It seems that whenever we see the news, there is some sort of tragedy in the world. ニューズを見るたびに、世界中のどこかで新しい悲劇があるみたいです。Sometimes it is a natural disaster like an earthquake or tsunami or epidemic and other times it is a human disaster like crime, war, gun violence or a terrorist attack. 地震や津波や疫病のような天災があれば、犯罪や戦争やテロリストのアタックのような人間の作った災いもあります。Whenever it happens, people ask "Why?" それが起こるたびに、人々は「何故か」と聞きます。The newscaster tries to explain. テレビのニューズのアナウンサーは説明しようと思います。We get lectures on geology and the weather and politics and psychology and medicine to explain the phenomenon. 地理学や気候学や政治や精神的や医学的な説明があります。
But when people ask "Why?", often they are asking not about the physical causes, but rather it is a much deeper question. しかし、人々は「何故か」と聞くとき、その物質的な原因を聞かないで、もっと深い質問をします。 “Why me? 「どうしてぼくが？ Why my friend? どうして僕の友達が？ Why this young child? どうしてこの小さい子供が？ Why those innocent people?” どうしてその罪の無い人々が？」と。 There is also this question, "Why do bad things happen to good people?" もう一つの質問とは、「どうして良い人に悪い事が起こるか」と。 This cannot be answered by newscasters or scientists or doctors. テレビのアナウンサーや科学者や医者はそれに答えられません。This can only be answered by God. 神様しか答えられません。And Jesus says it is the wrong question to ask, there is a better question to ask. そしてイエス様は、その質問が間違っている質問であると言われました。
In today's Gospel lesson, some people told Jesus about some sad news. 今日の福音書には、人々はイエス様に悲しいニューズを告げました。Pilate had killed some pilgrims from Galilee on their way to the temple to worship. ピラトは礼拝する時にカリラヤ人の巡礼者を殺しました。The question seems to have been, そのニューズを伝えた人々はイエス様にこのように聞いた みたいです、 "Why did God allow this to happen to these good people on their way to the temple? 「どうして神様はこのようなひどい事を許したでしょうか。 They weren't bad sinners to die that way, were they?" その人が礼拝する人だったので、悪い罪人ではないでしょう。」と。And Jesus says that they were no worse sinners than any other Galileans. イエス様は、彼らがほかのカリラヤ人よりも罪深い者ではなかったと言われました。 In other words, they were not being punished by God for their sins. 言い換えますと、何かの罪の為に神様が罰した訳ではありませんでした。
There was also an accident where a tower fell in Jerusalem and killed 18 people. 又、エルサレムでシロアムの塔が倒れた時に、１８人が死にました。Jesus says that they were not killed because of some particular bad sin. イエス様は彼らが犯した罪の為に罰された訳ではないと言われました。They were average sinners. 彼らは普通の罪人でした。 Jesus seems to turn the question around: イエス様は弟子達の質問を逆にしました。 Not why were THEY killed, but why weren't YOU killed. どうしてその人達が殺したかではなくて、どうしてあなた達が殺されなかったでしょうかと。 You are just as bad a sinner, so it could have been you just as well. あなた方は彼らと同じように罪人ですので、彼らの変わりにあなた方が殺されてもかまわないでしょう。 And Jesus called for them to repent, or else something similar might happen to them.そして、イエス様は「悔い改めなさい」と言われました。さもないと、あなた方にも同じような事が起こるでしょう。
In other words: when the towers fall, it is not a time for research, revenge, rage, or retaliation; but a time of reflection and repentance. 言い換えますと、塔が倒れる時は悔い改めの時です。仕返しや他の人を責める時ではありません。
Repentance is like the fruit of a tree. 悔い改めは木の実のようです。Repentance is not just feeling sorry. 悔い改めはただの悪い思いではありません。 Repentance is not just wringing your hands in prayer and feeling bad for your sins. 悔い改めとは、祈りをもって自分の罪のために、ごめんなさいと言っている事だけではありません。Repentance is not just wanting to escape the consequences of your sins. 悔い改めとは、自分の罪の結果から逃げたい事だけではありません。It surely starts there, but repentance grasps onto the forgiveness of Jesus Christ. その事から始まるかも知れませんが、悔い改めはイエス・キリストの赦しをつかみます。Repentance accepts Jesus into your life. 悔い改めは自分の人生の中でイエス様を受け入れます。 And when Jesus is in your life, you are a Christian. そして、イエス様があなたの人生の中にいますと、あなたはクリスチャンになります。That means that your life becomes the life of Christ. 即ち、その時、あなたの人生はキリストの人生になります。 Christ is working in you and through you. キリストはあなたの中で働いて、又、あなたを通して働いています。 You become Christ to the world. このようにして、あなたは世界に現れるキリストです。And when Christ is revealed to someone through you: that is like the fruit of a tree. そして、キリストがあなたを通して誰かに表されていますと、それは木の実のようです。It is proof that Christ is in you.キリストがあなたの中にいる証拠になります。
Whenever I read this Gospel passage, I remember my father. 今日の福音書を読むたびに、私は自分の父を思い出します。He had a nice garden with vegetables and a few fruit trees. 父の庭には、花と野菜と果物の木がありました。 He planted an apricot tree. その中には、あんずの木がありました。It had fruit only once. しかし、果物の実を結ぶのは一回だけでした。その後に実を結びませんでした。After about 3 years of no fruit, he decided to cut the tree down. ３年後、その木を切り倒しました。I am sure that he tried everything he could: pruning, fertilizer, insecticide, compost, etc. その前に、実が結ぶようにいろいろやってみました：せんてい、こやし、殺虫剤(さっちゅうざい)、コンポストなどです。But finally he cut it down to make way for a different sort of tree that would bear fruit: an (Italian) plum tree. しかし、最後に、木を切り倒して、その場所に実を結ぶ木を植えました。プラムの木でした。This tree had good fruit for many years.何年間で美味しい実を結びました。
In the parable, God says that a tree that does not bear fruit is just wasting the resources of the vineyard, taking up space and depleting the soil. 例え話の中で神様が言われるのは、実を結ばない木はぶどう園の土地を無駄にふさいでいます。場所がもったいないですし、土の栄養ももったいないです。 He is talking about people of course. 勿論、神様は人間の事を言われます。The parable is probably speaking about the country of Israel who did not accept Jesus as the Messiah. その例え話が最初にイエス様をメシヤとして受け入れなかったイスラエルの事を意味したでしょう。But these are words of judgment for us also. 裁きの言葉です。
But Jesus is the good gardener. しかし、イエス様は良い園丁です。 "Wait another year. Give it another chance. I'll give it nourishment." 「今年もこのままにしておいて下さい。木の周りをほって、肥やしをやってみます。その木に栄養を与えます。」And Jesus spoke the good news. イエス様は良い知らせを宣べ伝えました。He spoke about the love of God. 神様の愛について話しました。He gave nourishment to it with his life-blood. 又、その木である私達を御自分の命の血によって栄養を与えて下さいました。Traditional fertilizer is manure or compost. 昔から、植物に与える栄養は肥やし又コンポストです。Both are the products of things that are considered worthless. 両方共は、捨てられた物、価値がないと見える物です。 They are made of things that are thrown away. Dead leaves and branches and rotten fruit are thrown into the compost box. 枯れ葉や枝やくさった果物がコンポストの所に捨てられています。 There they decay and are transformed into compost that can give wonderful nourishment to flowers and plants. そこで腐ってしまいますと、コンポストに変わります。それは花や野菜やほかの植物にとって、素晴らしい栄養になります。This is like Jesus. これはイエス様のようです。People discarded Jesus like trash. 人間はイエス様をゴミのように捨ててしまいました。They thought his message of love was like dead leaves. イエス様の愛についてのメッセジーを枯れ葉のように思いました。They crucified and killed him. イエス様を十字架につけて殺しました。 His dead body was placed in the grave. 彼の死んだ体をお墓の中に置きました。Christ died on the cross. キリストは十字架上で死にました。 But decay and death could not decompose his body. 腐敗(ふはい)と死が彼の体を腐(くさ)れさせませんでした。 God Almighty transformed that dead body into a living body. 全能の神様は、その死んだ体を生きている体にしました。In the resurrection, the forces of death and decay gave way to life and healing. 復活によって、死と腐敗の力が命と癒やしの力によって征服されました。Therefore, our resurrected Lord, Jesus Christ, gives life and healing and nourishment to us. ですから、私達の甦られた主、イエス・キリストは私達に命と癒やしと栄養を下さいます。We are alive with the fruit of repentance, that is to say, we are alive with the life-style of faith.私達は悔い改めの実を結んで活きます、即ち、信仰の生活ぶりを送ります。
We started by talking about disasters. 最初に、災いについて話しました。The Gospel points to one earth-shaking event. 福音書の中には、この地球を揺(ゆ)り動かす出来事があります。 This is when the Jesus died on the cross. それは、イエス・キリストが十字架上で死んだ時です。 Why did Jesus have to die? どうしてイエス様が死んだでしょうか。Was Jesus a sinner to deserve such a tragedy? イエス様はそのような悲劇を受けるべき罪人でしたか。 Yes and no. ハイとイイエです。No, because Jesus never committed a single sin. イイエとは、イエス様は決して一つの罪も犯した事がないからです。But yes, because he took upon himself the sin of the world. しかし、ハイとは、御自分の上に世の罪を取ったからです。He became the worst sinner in the world. それで、世の一番ひどい罪人になりました。If Jesus had not died on the cross, then each of us should have died on the cross or should have died some other way. もしイエス様が十字架上で死ななければなりませんでしたら、私達一人一人が十字架上で、又、別の方法で死ぬべきでした。That is why Jesus came to tell us to repent, and to give us the power to repent and believe. ですから、イエス様は「悔い改めなさい」と言われました、そして、悔い改める力も下さいました。 That is to say, to live the life of faith in the power of the Holy Spirit. 即ち、「信仰によって、聖霊の力によって」活きるように力を与えました。 He nourishes us with the Word, with prayer, and with his body and blood in the Holy Communion. イエス様は私達に栄養を与えます、それは、御言葉、祈り、と聖餐式です。
