Isaiah said to make a highway for God in the desert. イザヤは言いました、「主のために、荒れ野に道を備え／わたしたちの神のために、荒れ地に広い道を通せ。」 It was the historical situation that the Exile of the Jews in Babylon was over and that they would soon be returning to the Promised Land. 歴史上の状態は、バビロニアに連れていかれたユダヤ人の捕囚（ほしゅう）が終わり、彼らはそろそろ約束の地に帰ります。 It would be a long trip for them, they had to travel through the desert. とても長い旅になります。砂漠を通って行きます。 So, Isaiah told them that God would be with them on their journey home and protect them, and so it would be like walking through a beautiful garden, it was beautiful because they were going home! それで、イザヤは予言しました、その約束の地への旅に、神様が彼らと共に行って彼らを守ります。それで、綺麗な公園を歩く事のようになります。何故ならば、家に帰るからです！
John the Baptist took the words of Isaiah and applied them to his own work. バプテスマのヨハネは、イザヤの言葉を借りて自分の働きに用（もち）いたのです。John was in the wilderness, and there he was preparing a highway for the Messiah to come to the Jews. ヨハネは荒れ野にいました。そこでユダヤ人の所に来られるメシアの来る道を備えました。 Whereas Isaiah told of the forgiveness of God, John was telling the people to repent of their sin and be baptized. イザヤは神様の赦しについて語りましたが、ヨハネは人々が自分の罪を悔い改めて洗礼を受けなさいと言いました。 In the Book of Isaiah, because God had forgiven the Jews, they could return home to the Promised Land from exile in Babylon. イザヤ書の場合には、神様がユダヤ人を赦して下さったので、バビロンでの捕囚から約束の地に帰る事が出来ます。 For John the Baptist, if the Jews again repented of their sins and turned to God, then the Messiah would lead them to salvation. ヨハネの場合には、罪を悔い改めて神様のもとに帰ったら、メシアは彼らを救いに導いて下さいます。 And Jesus did come. そしてイエス様は本当に来られました。 He was the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He was the road to salvation. 彼こそは、道であり、真理であり、命であります。彼こそは救いへの道です。
And today, we hear the words of Isaiah and John. そして、今日、私達はイザヤとヨハネの言葉を聞きます。 It is time for us to repent and believe in the Gospel. 今日、私達は悔い改めて福音を信じる時期です。 It is time for us to travel the road prepared for us. 私達の為に供えられた道を旅する時期です。 It is prepared for us by those who preach and teach the Gospel. 福音を述べ伝えたり教えたりする人が私達の為にその道を備えました。 We are led by the Holy Spirit. 私達が聖霊によって導かれています。 We take up our crosses and follow Jesus to the cross, to the grave, to the resurrection. 私達は自分の十字架を背負ってイエス様の後に従います。それは十字架まで、お墓まで、復活までです。
Both Isaiah and John were prophets. イザヤとヨハネは預言者でした。 They speak to us. 彼らは私達にも語ります。 When we hear these words, perhaps God is telling us also to prepare the road for the Messiah. 私達がその言葉を聞く時、神様が私達に、メシアの為に道を備える事を言われているのでしょうか。 Soon Christmas will be here, and so we need to prepare for his coming. クリスマスはそろそろ来ますので、キリストの来臨の準備をします。 Maybe we too should build a highway for the Lord in the wilderness. 私達も荒れ野の中で、主の道を作れば良いのでしょうか。 Taken literally, we might build a chapel in the desert or in the jungle or on a deserted island. 文字通りに解釈したら、新しい伝道所を砂漠の中やジャングルの中か、無人島に作る事でしょうか。 But when you think about it, sometimes the place where we are right now seems like a wilderness. しかし考えますと、私達が今いる場所が荒れ野のようです。 I am not talking about the economic situation of our homes. 私達の家の経済的な事を意味しません。I am talking about the desert-like conditions of our society as a whole.私達の社会全体的な状態が荒れ野のようです。People wander around in spiritual darkness and fear.人々は霊的な暗闇と恐れで迷い出ています。Hearts and eyes are dry from crying and pain and worry. 涙と痛みと心配の為に、目も心も乾きます。 And so the place to build a chapel is right here. ですから礼拝堂を建てる場所はここです。 This is where it is needed. ここに必要です。 And this is where the Messiah comes. そして、メシアはここに来られます。 That is the Christmas Story. それは、クリスマスのストーリーです。 Christ was born in this sinful wilderness of a world. キリストはこの罪深い荒れ野のような世界に生まれました。 He came to where we are. 私達がいる所に来られました。 Here he suffered like we do and then, even more, he suffered and was crucified for our sin. ここで、私達と同じように苦しみました、いや、それ以上に、私達の罪の為に苦しみを受けて十字架上で死にました。 Then he arose on the third day. そして、３日目に甦られました。 Then he promised our resurrection and eternal life in the Promised Land. 私達の復活と約束の地での永遠の命を約束しました。 That prophecy of Jesus is the prophecy that I believe and trust in the most. このイエス様の預言こそは、最も信じて最も信頼されるべき預言です。
God prophesied the birth of Christ, and he was born. 神様はキリストの誕生を予言して、そして、イエス様が生まれました。 Jesus prophesied his death and resurrection, and it was so. イエス様はご自分の死と復活を予言して、そのようになりました。 And so, I know that there is a highway prepared for me, for me to walk on in this life with Christ by my side. それで、私が知っている事は、私の為に供えられた道です。キリストが私のそばにいて、毎日その道を私は歩きます。 Let's walk with Christ together! キリストと共に歩みましょう！

Isaiah 40:1-5
Comfort for God’s People
40 Comfort, comfort my people,
says your God.
2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,
and proclaim to her
that her hard service has been completed,
that her sin has been paid for,
that she has received from the LORD’s hand
double for all her sins.
3 A voice of one calling:
“In the desert prepare
the way for the LORD;
make straight in the wilderness
a highway for our God.
4 Every valley shall be raised up,
every mountain and hill made low;
the rough ground shall become level,
the rugged places a plain.
5 And the glory of the LORD will be revealed,
and all mankind together will see it. For the mouth of the
LORD has spoken.
マルコ１：１−８
1:1 神の子イエス・キリストの福音の初め。1:2 預言者イザヤの書にこう書いてある。「見よ、わたしはあなたより先に使者を遣わし、／あなたの道を準備させよう。1:3 荒れ野で叫ぶ者の声がする。『主の道を整え、／その道筋をまっすぐにせよ。』」そのとおり、1:4 洗礼者ヨハネが荒れ野に現れて、罪の赦しを得させるために悔い改めの洗礼を宣べ伝えた。1:5 ユダヤの全地方とエルサレムの住民は皆、ヨハネのもとに来て、罪を告白し、ヨルダン川で彼から洗礼を受けた。1:6 ヨハネはらくだの毛衣を着、腰に革の帯を締め、いなごと野蜜を食べていた。1:7 彼はこう宣べ伝えた。「わたしよりも優れた方が、後から来られる。わたしは、かがんでその方の履物のひもを解く値打ちもない。1:8 わたしは水であなたたちに洗礼を授けたが、その方は聖霊で洗礼をお授けになる。」
イザヤ４０：１−５
40:1 慰めよ、わたしの民を慰めよと／あなたたちの神は言われる。
40:2 エルサレムの心に語りかけ／彼女に呼びかけよ／苦役の時は今や満ち、彼女の咎は償われた、と。罪のすべてに倍する報いを／主の御手から受けた、と。
40:3 呼びかける声がある。主のために、荒れ野に道を備え／わたしたちの神のために、荒れ地に広い道を通せ。
40:4 谷はすべて身を起こし、山と丘は身を低くせよ。険しい道は平らに、狭い道は広い谷となれ。
40:5 主の栄光がこうして現れるのを／肉なる者は共に見る。主の口がこう宣言される。
40:6 呼びかけよ、と声は言う。わたしは言う、何と呼びかけたらよいのか、と。肉なる者は皆、草に等しい。永らえても、すべては野の花のようなもの。
40:7 草は枯れ、花はしぼむ。主の風が吹きつけたのだ。この民は草に等しい。
40:8 草は枯れ、花はしぼむが／わたしたちの神の言葉はとこしえに立つ。
40:9 高い山に登れ／良い知らせをシオンに伝える者よ。力を振るって声をあげよ／良い知らせをエルサレムに伝える者よ。声をあげよ、恐れるな／ユダの町々に告げよ。見よ、あなたたちの神かみ
40:10 見よ、主なる神。彼は力を帯びて来られ／御腕をもって統治される。見よ、主のかち得られたものは御もとに従い／主の働きの実りは御前を進む。
40:11 主は羊飼いとして群れを養い、御腕をもって集め／小羊をふところに抱き、その母を導いて行かれる。
