“The Courageous Chicken”
「勇気があるチッケン」

Luke 13:31-35ルカ１３：３１−３５

31 At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, “Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you.”

32 He replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘I will drive out demons and heal people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.’ 33 In any case, I must keep going today and tomorrow and the next day?for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem! 34 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! 35 Look, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

31 ちょうどそのとき、ファリサイ派の人々が何人か近寄って来て、イエスに言った。「ここを立ち去ってください。ヘロデがあなたを殺そうとしています。」

32 イエスは言われた。「行って、あの狐に、『今日も明日も、悪霊を追い出し、病気をいやし、三日目にすべてを終える』とわたしが言ったと伝えなさい。33 だが、わたしは今日も明日も、その次の日も自分の道を進まねばならない。預言者がエルサレム以外の所で死ぬことは、ありえないからだ。34 エルサレム、エルサレム、預言者たちを殺し、自分に遣わされた人々を石で打ち殺す者よ、めん鳥が雛を羽の下に集めるように、わたしはお前の子らを何度集めようとしたことか。だが、お前たちは応じようとしなかった。35 見よ、お前たちの家は見捨てられる。言っておくが、お前たちは、『主の名によって来られる方に、祝福があるように』と言う時が来るまで、決してわたしを見ることがない。」

“The Courageous Chicken”
「勇気があるチッケン」

Jesus is the Good Shepherd and we are the sheep of his flock. イエス様は良い羊飼いであり、私達はその群れの羊です。He gathers us into the sheepfold and protects us from robbers and wolves. 私達を羊の囲kakoいに集めて、泥棒や狼から私達を守ってくださいます。 This is a very beautiful way to describe the relationship we have with Jesus. 私達のイエス様との関係を表すためにとてもきれいな例えです。 As the Good Shepherd, he lays down his life in order that the sheep might live. 良い羊飼いとして、羊である私達が生きる事が出来るために、ご自分の命を捨ててくださいました。 He died on the cross so that we might be saved. 私達が救われる為に、十字架上で死んでくださいました。

In today’s Gospel lesson there is a different picture of Jesus. 今日の福音書の日課の中では、イエス様を描egaく異なった描写（びょうしゃ）があります。 He says, (vs.34) “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!” ３４節で言われました、「エルサレム、エルサレム、預言者たちを殺し、自分に遣わされた人々を石で打ち殺す者よ、めん鳥が雛hinaを羽haneの下に集めるように、わたしはお前の子らを何度集めようとしたことか。だが、お前たちは応ouじようとしなかった。」 Have you ever thought of God as being a mother chicken who takes her baby chicks under her wings to protect them? 神様が、自分の雛hinaを自分の翼tsubasaの下で守るお母さんの鶏niwatoriのように、考えた事がありますか。 The chicks can be running around the yard, but when danger comes, she clucks and clucks to them to run under her wings and hide in her feathers. 雛が庭を駆け回っていますが、危険が来ると、雌鳥mendoriが鳴いて警報を鳴らすので、雛は走ってきてお母さんの翼の下、羽の中に自分を隠kakuす事が出来ます。 She will use her sharp beak to ward off any cat or dog that gets close. 鋭surudoいくちばしを使って、近よってくるネコや犬と戦います。 Birds can be fierce when protecting their young. 自分の雛を守る時、鳥は恐ろしいほど戦います。I’ve been attacked by both crows and sea-gulls when I’ve gotten too close to their nesting areas. 私の散歩の時、烏karasuにも海のカモメにも襲osoわれたことがあります。それは、鳥の巣の近くを歩いた時です。The birds come swooping down, threatening with their sharp, screeching beaks and sharp claws. 鳥が私を狙neraって、鋭いくちばしで鳴いて、鋭いかきつめを持って飛びかかります。 I get out of the area fast. 私はその巣のある所からすぐ逃げます。 Mother chickens are just as protective. へん鳥は同じ程度自分の雛を守ると思います。 That is the way that Jesus will protect us, too. イエス様も、そのようにして私達を守って下さいます。 We are his chicks, his precious children.私達はイエス様の雛、イエス様の尊い子供です。

But there is a problem. Little chicks like to wander around. 問題とは、小さな雛達は、かき回す事が好きです。 They don’t want to stay under the wings of their mother. 自分のお母さんの翼の下に長くいたくありません。 They are the original meaning of the old expression; they want to “get out from under their mother’s wings.” それで、古い英語の表現の元々の意味があります、即ち、「お母さんの翼の下から出る」事です。 Little chicks have a big world to explore, they want to see what a cat looks like, and they want to try fighting on their own. 小さな雛には、見たい大きな世界があります：ネコはどのものでしょうか、自分で戦ってみたいと思います。 They are just like us. 私達と同じでしょう。Sometimes we might feel smothered under the protective wings of Jesus, we feel that his laws and regulations and commandments are preventing us from enjoying the world. 時々、私達はイエス様の守って下さる翼の下にいると、息をすることが出来ないように感じます。イエス様の律法と規定と十戒の為に、この世界をエンジョイすることが出来ないみたいです。 The church is just a clucking hen trying to suffocate us. 教会は私達の息を殺す雌鳥みたいです。We are like what Jesus said about the city of Jerusalem, 私達は、イエス様がエルサレムの町について話した事と同じです。“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!” 「エルサレム、エルサレム、預言者たちを殺し、自分に遣わされた人々を石で打ち殺す者よ、めん鳥が雛を羽の下に集めるように、わたしはお前の子らを何度集めようとしたことか。だが、お前たちは応じようとしなかった。」 They were not willing to be protected. 彼らは応ouじようと思いませんでした。 They were not willing to be saved. 守ってもらいたくありませんでした。救われる事もねがいませんでした。Jerusalem had been the place where Old Testament prophets had been killed and stoned. 旧約聖書の預言者達がエルサレムで石で打ち殺された事があります。 The prophets wanted to protect the people by proclaiming the Word of God and the Will of God. 預言者達は神様の御言葉と神様の御心を述べ伝えて民を守りたいと思いました。 But the people were not willing to listen to them, and they would not want to listen to Jesus, either. しかし、人々は彼らの言うことを聞こうと思いませんでした、同じように、イエス様の言うことも聞きたくありませんでした。 They would kill their Savior. 自分の救い主を殺そうと思いました。 We do the same when we refuse to believe in Jesus or take protection under his wing, that is to say, when we don’t listen the Bible or receive the sacraments. 私達がイエス様を信じたくない時、彼の翼の下に守ってもらいたくない時、私達はその人々と同じです。例えば、聖書の語る言葉に聞かない時、聖礼典を受けないときです。 It is the same as killing and stoning the prophets. それは預言者達を石で打ち殺す事と同じです。 It is crucifying Jesus.イエス様を十字架に付ける事です。

Perhaps the reason Jesus compared himself to a hen protecting her chicks, was because he had called Herod a “fox.” どうしてイエス様がご自分をへん鳥に例えたかと言いますと、たぶん、先にヘロデを狐に例えたからでしょう。 The really dangerous wild animals in Palestine in the time of Jesus were the lion, bear, and wolf. イエス様の時代のパレスチナ地方の本当に危ない野生の動物とは、ライオン、クマ、とオオカミでした。 Herod is only like a fox, he is not a big political player, but he could still be vicious. ヘロデはただキツネのようでした。ヘロデは政治的に力強い者ではありませんでしたが、それなのに、恐ろしい時がありました。 A fox is wild. 狐は野生の動物です。 It can do damage. 被害higaiをくわえる事が出来ます。 There is the old expression, “to be like a fox in the henhouse.” 古い表現ですが、「鶏の小屋の中の狐」と。 If a fox gets into the chicken coop, it can kill dozens of birds, just for the excitement of killing, and not even eating any of the birds. 狐は鶏の小屋に入りますと、鶏を何羽も殺す事が出来ます、キツネにとってはただ殺すための遊びです。鳥を全然食べないで殺す事があります。 Herod is that sort of wanton killer. ヘロデは、そのようなもったいない、狂っている殺人者です。 So, in the face of Herod the Fox, Jesus will be like the Hen that gathers her chicks under her wings. ですから、この狐であるヘロデの前で、イエス様は、自分の翼の下の雛を集めるめん鳥のようになります。 Even if the fox attacks the hen and kills her, the chicks are protected under her body and are safe. たとえ、狐がそのめん鳥を殺しても、雛は、その体の下に守られて安全です。 Herod wanted to kill Jesus. ヘロデはイエス様を殺したいと思いました。Later he will let that be done by Pilate. 後で、ピラトはそれをします。Jesus will be killed on the cross. イエス様は十字架上で殺されます。 But we who have found shelter under his outstretched arms will be safe. しかし、イエス様の広く伸ばされた手の下で隠れ家を見つけた私達は安全です。

It wasn’t really Herod or even Pilate or the Jews who had Jesus killed. 本当のことを言うと、イエス様を殺したのは、ヘロデでもないし、ピラトでもないし、ユダヤ人たちでもありません。 It was Satan. それは悪魔でした。 He thought Jesus was easy prey, just a “sitting duck.” イエス様が弱く、自分を守る事が出来ないもの「狙neraいやすい人の」ように思いました。 But Jesus was the Sacrifice that arose from the dead on the third day. イエス様は犠牲でした。３日目に甦られた犠牲でした。 He arose to bring healing and life to those who believe in him.しかし、復活して、彼を信じる人々に癒しと命を与えます。

When Jesus calls us, let’s go under his protective wing. イエス様が私達に警報を鳴らす時、彼の守りの翼の下に行きましょう。 The soft feathers are his love and grace.イエス様の愛と恵みは、やわらかい羽haneのようです。 Where is you hiding place? The church, the Bible, friends, prayer?　あなたの隠れる所はどこですか。教会、聖書、友達、祈りでしょうか。

Finally, as a footnote, I wonder if this could add new meaning to Easter eggs. 最後に、ちょっと脱線しますが、この話が、イースターの卵に新しい意味を与えるでしょうか。 We are the eggs. 私達はその卵です。 We are the chicks that are given new life in the resurrection of Jesus. 私達はイエス様の復活によって新しい命を得る雛です。 We are gathered into the basket, like being gathered into the Kingdom of God. かごに集められた事は、神の御国に集められた事のようでしょう。
