There is a lot of Christmas art. クリスマスの芸術は多いです。 The art tells the Christmas story and proclaims the Gospel of Salvation. そのアートはクリスマスの物語を教えて、救いの福音を述べ伝えます。 Art often uses symbols to tell the meaning of a story. ストーリの意味を告げる為に、アートはよくシンボルを利用します。 Often the symbols tell a deeper meaning and bring out faith in our hearts. そのシンボルは、もっと深い意味を表して、私達の心の中に信仰を起こします。 Let me give two examples today. 今日、二つの例をあげます。
The first symbol is the star. 一つ目は星です。 The Wisemen saw a star. 博士達は星を見ました。 They interpreted it to mean that a great person had been born in Israel. 彼等の解釈は、イスラエルに偉大なる人が生まれた事です。 So they went to pay homage to the newborn king. それで、博士達は生まれた王様を拝みに行きました。 Their three gifts are symbols of who Jesus was: 彼等の３つの貢（みつ）げものは、イエス様がどなたであるかを教えます。 gold for a king, 王様の為の黄金、frankincense for a priest, 祭司の為のにゅうこう、and myrrh for a suffering prophetそして苦しむ預言者の為のもつやくです。 But back to the star, 星に戻ります。in many religious paintings, the Star of Bethlehem has a special shape. 多くの宗教画には、そのベツレヘムの星は特別な形をしています。 It is not the ordinary 5 pointed star ☆, but a 4 pointed star with the bottom point elongated so that it looks like a cross, a radiant cross. 普通の五画の星☆よりも、四角の星で、その下のとんがりは長いです。それで十字架のような形で、栄光の十字架のようです。And the bottom point of the star leads the Wisemen to the place where Jesus lay. そして、その下のポイントは、イエス様が寝かされた場所に博士達を導きます。 In this work of art, we see the Wisemen going, not just to a little baby, but to the Messiah who would die on the cross to forgive our sins. この芸術の中で、私達は博士達の行く所を見ます。ただの赤ちゃんではなくて、私達の罪を赦す為に死ぬメシアのもとに導きます。 In this cross-shaped star we see the Gospel of Salvation. この十字架の形の星の中に、私達は救いの福音を見ます。We see the meaning of the Birth of Christ. キリストの誕生の意味を見ます。 We are reminded that there is no salvation without the death of Christ. キリストが死ななければ救いがありません。 There is no salvation without dealing with the suffering caused by sin. 私達の罪が引き起こす苦しみの答(こた)えがなければ、救いがありません。 This is the meaning of the Birth of Christ. これはキリストの聖降誕の意味です。
For many years I have been fascinated by the cross-shaped star. 何年も前から、この十字架の形の星が面白いと思いました。This last week for the first time I saw another symbol in Christmas art that I think points to the suffering and death of our Lord. 先週、初めてクリスチャンの芸術の中で、もう一つのシンボルを見ました。それも主の苦しみと死を表します。 That symbol is the donkey. そのしるしとはロバです。
In many Christmas paintings and Christmas pageants, we see Mary sitting on a donkey. 多くのクリスマスの絵や劇の中で、マリアはロバに乗ります。 Mary and Joseph are heading toward Bethlehem where Jesus will be born. マリアとヨセフはベツレヘムに向かって旅をします。そこでイエス様が生まれます。 Then later, in artwork depicting the flight into Egypt, again Joseph leads a donkey, on which Mary is sitting holding the infant Jesus in her arms. 後で、エジプトに逃げる時にも、マリアは赤ちゃんイエス様を腕の中で抱いて、ロバに乗ります。 In the Bible, there is no mention of a donkey in the Christmas story. 聖書のクリスマスの物語の中にロバは出てきません。 I think that artists and Christmas pageant directors have felt compassion for Mary. クリスチャンの絵を書く人やクリスマスの劇を作る人は、マリアを大事にします。 From Nazareth to Bethlehem it is at least 80 miles. ナザレの町からベツレヘムの町までは、１００キロメータ以上です。 That is a long way for a pregnant woman to walk. 妊娠している女の人がそこまで歩くのは大変でしょう。 And artists have always paid special respect for Mary because she is the Mother of our Lord. その上、芸術者はいつも、私達の主の母マリアに特別の尊敬を表します。 And so in Mary, Jesus rode on donkey on the way to Bethlehem, the City of King David. それで、ダビデ王の町ベツレヘムまで、マリアによって、イエス様もそのロバに乗ります。 In the midst of the joy of Christmas, I always thought the pictures of the Holy Family traveling to Bethlehem rather sad. クリスマスの喜びの中で、ベツレヘムへ旅する聖家族の絵が淋しいと思います。
The Bible relates that Jesus later rode another donkey when he entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. イエス様はもう一頭のロバに乗りました。それは、エルサレムに入場した時のしゅろの日曜日でした。 He did not go there to be born, but rather to die. 生まれる為ではなくて、死ぬ為に行かれました。 On Good Friday Jesus would be crucified. 聖金曜日に十字架につけられました。 On Sunday there were cheers but on Friday there were jeers. Shouts of “Hosanna” became shouts of “Crucify him!” 『ホサナ』と言う叫びは『十字架につけよ』と言う叫びになりました。 In the Palm Sunday Gospel there are echoes of Christmas. しゅろの日曜日に、クリスマスのひびきがあります。 The heavenly choir of angels becomes the joyful voices of the Jerusalem crowd. 天使の軍勢のコーラスはエルサレムの群衆の喜びの叫びになります。
The angels sang, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests” Luke 2:14. ルカ２:１３−１４『2:13 すると、突然、この天使に天の大軍が加わり、神を賛美して言った。2:14 「いと高きところには栄光、神にあれ、地には平和、御心に適う人にあれ。」』
The crowd in Jerusalem praises God in loud voices and say, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest” Luke 19:38. ルカ１９:３７−３８『19:37弟子の群れはこぞって、自分の見たあらゆる奇跡のことで喜び、声高らかに神を賛美し始めた。19:38 「主の名によって来られる方、王に、祝福があるように。天には平和、いと高きところには栄光。」』
Both sing of peace and glory in the highest. 両方は平和と栄光について歌います。 Jesus was born in Bethlehem in order to die in Jerusalem. イエス様がベツレヘムで生まれる理由とは、エルサレムで死ぬ為です。 Jesus was born and died in order to bring true peace and glory. 本当の平和と栄光をもたらす為に生まれ、死にました。 That is why the Palm Sunday Gospel is the Gospel for the First Sunday in Advent. このしゅろの日曜日の福音書の日課は、アドベントの第一の主日の為にふさわしいです。 Christmas is not just about babies and gifts and Santa Claus. クリスマスは、赤ちゃんとプレゼントとサンタさんだけではありません。 Christmas is about our sin and our need for salvation. クリスマスは私達の罪と救いの必要について語ります。
I love Christian art. 私はクリスチャンのアートが大好きです。 “A picture is worth a thousand words.” 「一枚の絵は千の言葉に価します。」 A Christian work of art is worth a sermon that proclaims the Gospel of Salvation. クリスチャンのアートは、救いの福音を述べ伝える説教です。 Keep your eyes open this Advent season for Gospel of Salvation. このアドヴェントの節、目をさまして救いの福音を見ましょう！
