On Christmas Eve we celebrated the Birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ. クリスマス・イブ、私達の主イエス・キリストの誕生日をお祝いしました。 In faith, we journeyed to Bethlehem and heard the Angels who sang, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." 信仰によって、私達はベツレヘムに旅をして、天使の歌を聞きました：「いと高きところには栄光、神にあれ、／地には平和、御心に適う人にあれ。」 Through the reading of the scriptures and in song and prayer, we went to the Manger and saw the New-Born Christ Child who was to become the Savior. 聖書の朗読や歌や祈りによって、私達は飼い葉桶の所に行って、救い主になる子供のキリストを見ました。 Today we return to Bethlehem as we travel with the Wisemen. 今日、博士達と共に旅をして、私達はベツレヘムに戻ります。 What will we see new today? 今日新しく見るものは何でしょうか。
The thing that we will emphasize today is that Jesus was to become the Savior of the whole world. 今日強調する事は、イエス様が全世界の救い主になる事です。 At Christmas, the shepherds and all who were there were Israelites. クリスマスの時、羊飼いなどは全部イスラエル人でした。 Jesus first came to the chosen people of Israel. イエス様は先ず、イスラエルである神様の選ばれた人々に来られました。 Jesus was born under the Jewish Law. イエス様はユダヤ人の律法の下に生まれました。 He fulfilled the prophecies of the Old Testament. 旧約聖書の預言を成就しました。 But today, as we celebrate Epiphany, we celebrate that Jesus was the Savior of not only the Jews, but of the Gentiles, too. しかし、今日、顕現主日をお祝いするのは、このイエス様が、ユダヤ人だけの救い主ではなくて、異邦人の救い主でもあることです。
The Wisemen were not Jews, but rather they came from the east, probably from the area of modern-day Iraq. 博士達はユダヤ人ではなくて、東の国から来た人でした。多分、現代のイラクの国の当たりから来たでしょう。 They were not Jewish believers, rather they were pagans. ユダヤ教の信者ではありませんでした。 They are called "Magi,” from which we get the English word "magic" and “magician.” 「占星術」の学者と呼ばれています。ギリシャ語では「マゴイ」です。その言葉から "magic" と"magician" 「魔法」と「魔法使い」が来ます。They were "Wisemen" because they studied many things, for example, the stars. ★「博士」と言って、多くの物を学びました、例えば、★です。 They were not astronomers who studied the stars for science, rather they were more like astrologers, who wanted to cast fortunes and tell the future. 科学者としての天文学ではなくて、星占術の方でした。 We Christians denounce astrology and horoscopes because we trust God to take care of us now and in the future. キリスト教会は星占いなどを認めません。何故ならば、今の為にも未来の為にも、神様を信頼するからです。 So, the profession of the Wisemen is embarrassing for us. ですから、博士達の職業は、私達の為に恥ずかしいと思います。But, you know, for all our embarrassment, God worked a miracle in the sky so that the Birth of Jesus could be proclaimed throughout the entire universe. しかし、私達が恥ずかしくても、神様は天の空に奇跡を行いました。それは、イエス様の誕生を宇宙に宣言する為です。 Psalm 19:1 says, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands." 詩編１９が言います、「天は神の栄光を物語り／大空は御手の業を示す。」 Modern theologians and modern astronomers do not know what star ★ or special phenomena the Wisemen saw. 現代の天文学者や神学者は、博士達が見た星★や天の現象は何であったか分かりません。 There are a number of guesses but that is all they are. いくつかのすいそくがありますが、分かりません。 Maybe it was a comet or a nova or the position of the planets in a constellation. 例えば、水星、ノヴァ、一つの星座の中の惑星の位置かも知りません。 But somehow, God revealed to them the meaning of the star. しかし、何かの特別な方法で、神様は博士達にその星の意味を表して下さいました。
And so they came to Jerusalem and said, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him." それでエルサレムに来て、言いました、「ユダヤ人の王としてお生まれになった方は、どこにおられますか。わたしたちは東方でその方の星を見たので、拝みに来たのです。」 It is interesting that even though they knew the child was the king of the Jews, the revelation of the star in the sky was not enough to guide them to the Christ Child. 面白いと私は思いますが、生まれた子供がユダヤ人の王であると分かりましたが、星は子供のキリストがいる所までに導く事が出来ませんでした。 The detailed revelation was in the Bible, and it took the Bible scholars to reveal the information about the birth place of the Christ to the Wisemen. しかし、その詳しい啓示は、聖書の中に有りました。聖書の学者達はすぐ分かりまして、教えました。
『'In Bethlehem in Judea,' they replied, 'for this is what the prophet has written: "But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel." ' 』「ユダヤのベツレヘムです。預言者がこう書いています。 『ユダの地、ベツレヘムよ、／お前はユダの指導者たちの中で／決していちばん小さいものではない。お前から指導者が現れ、／わたしの民イスラエルの牧者となるからである。』」 And then the Wisemen went out and were overjoyed when the star led them right to the house where Jesus was! 博士達は出かけて、星を見て、そして、その星は子供がいる家まで導いたので、大喜びました！ Then "they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of frankincense and of myrrh." 「彼らはひれ伏して幼子を拝み、宝の箱を開けて、黄金、乳香、没薬を贈り物として献げた」のです。 These treasures just right for Jesus: イエス様の為に、ふさわしい贈り物でした。 gold is fit for a king, 黄金は王様の為にふさわしい物ですし、 incense is fit for a priest during worship, 乳香は礼拝でいけにえと祈りをささげる祭司の為にふさわしい物ですし、 and myrrh is fit for the Savior who would die on the cross. そして、没薬は十字架上で死ぬ救い主の為にふさわしい物でした。The gifts revealed the truth about Jesus.この贈り物はイエス様について本当の事を表しました。
And then God makes another revelation to the Wisemen in a dream, to return to their country by another route and not to tell Herod about Jesus. そして、夢の中で、神様は博士達にもう一つの啓示を告げます。即ち、ヘロデ王に何も話さないで、違う道で国に帰るように告げました。
In the story of the Wisemen, God has revealed to us a great mystery. この博士の物語の中で、神様は私達に大きな神秘を啓示して下さいました。 It is not revealed by a star or other natural wonder. 実は、星やほかの自然の現象によって啓示されていません。 Natural wonders of beauty can reveal the power and glory of God, but true understanding is given through the Word of the Bible. 自然の素晴らしくて綺麗な物は神様の力と栄光を現す事が出来ますが、本当の理解は神様の御言葉である聖書によって啓示されています。 In the Bible, the great mystery we learn is that Jesus, the King of the Jews, is also the Savior of the whole world. 聖書を通して教えられている大きな神秘とは、ユダヤ人の王として生まれたイエス様は、全世界の救い主でもある事です。 The Wisemen were only the first Gentiles to come and worship Jesus. 博士達は、ただ、最初に来て礼拝する異邦人でした。 Not only Jews, but Gentiles also are saved through the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus. ユダヤ人だけではなくて、異邦人もイエス様のお生まれ、死と復活によって救われています。 Jesus' death on the cross was to forgive the sin of the world and so give the "peace on earth" about which the Christmas Angels sang. イエス様の十字架上での死は全世界の罪を赦す為でしたので、クリスマスの天使が歌った「地上に平和」を下さいます。 In today's Epistle lesson from Ephesians, St. Paul clearly reveals God's plan to save all people. 今日の使徒書、エフェソ３章には、聖パウロはすべての人々を救う神様の御計画についてはっきり話します。
The Wisemen were told not to tell anyone, but rather to return home in secret. But we have been told something different. 博士達は誰にも話さないように、密かに国に帰るように注意されていましたが、私達には違う事が教えられています。 We have been told to tell everyone about the Christ Child. この子供のキリストについてすべての人々に話すように命令されています。 Jesus revealed the Great Commission to the Twelve Disciples and to all people who have become his disciples. 天国に帰る前に、イエス様はその１２弟子、及び、すべての弟子になる人々にこのように言われました。 “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”「私は天と地の一切の権能を授かっている。だから、あなたがたは行って、すべての民をわたしの弟子にしなさい。彼らに父と子と聖霊の名によって洗礼を授け、あなたがたに命じておいたことをすべて守るように教えなさい。私は世の終わりまで、いつもあなたがたと共にいる。」
When we give our offerings in Church, we are like the Wisemen. 教会の礼拝の時に、献金をささげる時、私達は博士達のようです。 Our offerings are a symbol of our worship and faith. 私達の献金は私達の礼拝と信仰のしるしです。 But our gifts to God are only a fraction of the wonderful gifts that he has given us. しかし、私達の神様への贈り物は、神様から下さった素晴らしい数多くの贈り物の小さな部分です。He has given us life, forgiveness, salvation and eternal life. 命をも、赦しをも、救いをも、永遠の命をも下さいました。 And these are gifts that we can give to other people too, as we proclaim the Gospel. そして、福音を宣べ伝える時、私達はこの贈り物を多くの人々に与えます。 We tell the message that the Gospel is not for just a few people, but for all people who believe that the Christ Child is the Savior of the World.福音は少ない数人だけの為にではなくて、子供のキリストが世の救い主であると信じるすべての人々の為です。
