Our Gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh
"私達の贈り物： 黄金、乳香、没薬"

When the Wisemen visited Jesus, they brought gifts with them: gold, frankincense and myrrh. 博士達がイエス様を訪ねた時、贈り物を持って来ました：黄金、乳香と没薬でした。When we come to Jesus, what gifts should we bring?私達がイエス様を訪ねる時、どんな贈り物を持って行くでしょうか。Like the Wisemen, let�s bring our gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.博士達のように、私達の黄金、乳香と没薬の贈り物にしましょう。

The 3 gifts are said to represent the 3 fold office of Christ.その３つのギフトは、キリストの３重の任務である働きを表すそうです。As we studied in the Catechism, the 3 fold office of Christ is as prophet, priest and king.小教理問答書で学んだように、そのキリストの３重の任務とは、預言者、祭司と王様です。Gold is for a king, incense is for a priest, and myrrh is for a dying prophet.黄金は王様の為、乳香は祭司の為、そして、没薬は死ぬ預言者の為です。

To give a gift of gold to a king was more than a simple present. .王様に黄金のギフトをあげる事とは、これがただのプレゼントではないことを表します。It was a sign of loyalty, a pledge of allegiance. それは忠誠のしるしです。When we give our gold to Christ, it is more than just money in the offering basket. 私達がキリストに私達の黄金をあげる時、ただの献金袋にいれるお金ではありません。The offering is a sign of our loyalty to Christ; it is a symbol of our confession of faith that Christ is our King.この献金はキリストに対する忠誠を表し、イエス・キリストが自分の王様でるという信仰告白のシンボルになります。That is why we encourage even children to give an offering in church.ですから私達は子供たちにも教会で献金をする事を勧めます。It is not just training so that they will know how to give when they get older.大人になる時の献金の習慣を身につけるための手段だけではありません。It may be mother�s money, but the action of offering is a confession of faith.たとえそれがお母さんがくれたお金でしても、献金する動作は信仰の告白です。Do you remember the story in the Gospel of Mark when a poor widow at the temple gave only two very small copper coins? (Mark 12:41-44)マルコの福音書の話があります。貧しいやもめが神殿の賽銭箱にとっても小さいレプトン銅貨二枚を入れました。（マルコ12:41-44）。Jesus praised her for putting in everything she had.彼女の持っている物をすべて献金したので、イエス様は彼女をほめました。It was a sign of her faith, of trusting in God her King for everything.それは彼女の信仰のしるしで、彼女の持っている全てのもののために王様である神様を信頼する証でした。Our gold is a sign of our faith and allegiance to Christ. 私達の黄金は自分の信仰とキリストに対する忠誠のしるしです。

In the modern Christian church, incense is not used very much any more.現代のキリスト教会では、香をたく事があまりありません。In the Old Testament it was used every day at the temple.旧約聖書時代では、毎日神殿で祭司は香をたきました。It was used at the time of prayer.祈りの時に使いました。As the smoke of the incense rose up into the sky, so the prayers of the people rose up to God in Heaven.その煙が空にのぼるのと同じように、人々の祈りが天にいる神様の所にのぼりました。In the Bible, incense was used by a priest.聖書には、香は祭司によって使われた物でした。 When the Wisemen gave the gift of frankincense to the Baby Jesus, they were acknowledging that Christ was their priest, that Christ was the One who would pray for them. 博士達が乳香を赤ちゃんイエス様にあげる時、このキリストは自分達の祭司であり、このキリストが自分達の為に父なる神様に祈る事という信仰を表します。Incense was a symbol of prayer.香は祈りのしるしです。The frankincense that we give to Christ is our prayers.私達がキリストにささげる乳香とは、私達の祈りです。We do not need the smoke; we know that our prayers will indeed reach God in Heaven.私達には煙を必要としません、私達の祈りが天国にいる神様に届くと分かるからです。Our gift to the Christ Child is our prayers.子供のキリストに贈る私達の贈り物は、私達の祈りです。We use the expression to "offer prayers," because we give our prayers to God. They are an offering. 「祈りをささげる」と言う表現を使う理由とは、私達が自分の祈りを神様に捧げるからです。ささげものです。We pray for ourselves and those whom we love. 自分の為にも、愛する人々の為にも、全ての人の為に祈ります。

The gift of myrrh is strange gift to give to a baby. 没薬は子供の為には変な贈り物です。Myrrh is a type of spice and was used in Egypt to preserve bodies for mummification.没薬とは、スパイスの一種です。昔のエジプトでは、死者をミイラにするとき、その体を保存する為に使いました。 As a medicine it was a drug with a stupefying effect.又、薬として、体を無感覚にし, まひさせる効果がありました。And it was very bitter.そして、とってもニガイものです。When the Wisemen gave this gift to Jesus, it was a prophecy that Jesus would be killed.博士達がこのギフトをイエス様にあげると、イエス様が殺されることの予言でした。But on the cross when offered a drink of wine mixed with myrrh, Jesus did not drink it. (Mark 15:23).十字架上にいる時、兵士達はイエス様に没薬を混ぜたぶどう酒を飲ませようとしたが、イエスはお受けにならなかったのです。（マルコ15:23）。Jesus had already partaken of the bitter cup of suffering, and he would not lessen the pain of the suffering for the sin of the world.イエス様はもう既にニガイ苦しみの杯を受けたのですし、世の罪の為の罰を受ける為の痛みを小さくしようと思いませんでした。However, when Jesus was buried, he was wrapped in linen clothes with a mixture of myrrh and aloes (John 19:39).　しかし、イエス様が葬られた時、没薬と沈香の香料を添えて亜麻布で包んでいました（ヨハネ19:39）。　Jesus the Christ died as a prophet because as a prophet he had proclaimed the word of God. イエス様は預言者として死んでいたのは、預言者として神様の御言葉を述べ伝えていたからです。That word was the gospel of love and forgiveness.その御言葉とは、愛と赦しの福音でした。He suffered because of he had proclaimed that word of God.神様の御言葉を述べ伝えていたから、苦しみを受けました。His bitter suffering was like the bitter myrrh.イエス様のニガイ苦しみはニガイ没薬のようです。It is our sin that gives him that myrrh.私達の罪がイエス様にその没薬を与えます。Our gift of myrrh to Jesus is when we confess our sins and lay them on Jesus.私達のイエス様に与える没薬の贈り物とは、自分の罪を告白して、その罪をイエス様に載せる時です。Then we receive the forgiveness that came when Jesus died as a sacrifice on the cross. その時、私達は、犠牲として死んで下さったキリストから赦しをいただきます。

We confess that Jesus is our prophet, priest and king.イエス様が私達の預言者、祭司と王様であると告白します。Therefore we offer him the treasures that we have.ですから、自分が持っている宝をささげます。We offer him our loyalty, our prayers, and our faith私達の忠実さ、私達の祈りと私達の信仰をささげます。
