There was a single mother who had an only son. あるやもめに１人の子がいました。 This son had died. この息子が死にました。 As the funeral procession came out of the town toward the cemetery, a famous traveling preacher named Jesus came by. お葬式の行列は町から出て、墓地の方に進みましたが、そこにイエス様がやって来ました。 Perhaps he would give a comforting sermon at the funeral. 彼らはイエス様がお葬式の為に、慰めを与える説教をして下さると思ったかもしれません。He could talk about the love of God and the resurrection at the end of the world and eternal life. イエス様が神の愛、世の終わりの復活と永遠の命について話すでしょう。 He could give comfort and hope. 慰めと希望を与えるでしょう。He told the woman not to cry any more, but the widow could not stop grieving. イエス様はこの母親を見て憐れに思い、「もう泣かなくともよい」と言われました。しかし、悲しむ事を止める事が出来ませんでした。 He saw the widow, the young man being carried on the funeral bier, and Jesus was filled with compassion. イエス様はその母親を見て、棺にいる息子を見て、イエス様は、憐れみに満たされました。 He understood her feelings, and in his heart he felt the same sadness, perhaps his eyes were beginning to fill with tears, too. イエス様は、その母親の気持ち、その感情が分かりました。同情があったので、ご自分の心の中にも、同じ悲しみがありました。イエス様の目にも、涙がこぼれそうだったでしょう。 Then he spoke words that are never spoken at a funeral. そして、お葬式で決して話した事がない言葉を言われました。 He said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." 「若者よ、あなたに言う。起きなさい」と言われました。And the dead man sat up and was so fully recovered that he began to speak. すると、死人は起き上がってものを言い始めたのです。 Soon everyone one began to speak, and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!" そして、すぐ、皆が話し始めました、「大預言者が我々の間に現れた」と言い、また、「神はその民を心にかけてくださった」と言いました。And this report about him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country. イエスについてのこの話は、ユダヤの全土と周りの地方一帯に広まったのです。

In this Gospel reading, we see the resurrection power of Jesus, and we see the reason that Jesus reveals that power. この福音書の日課で私達が見るのは、イエス様の復活の力です。又、どうしてイエス様がその力を現して下さったか、その理由をも見ます。 In this story we see the power of the compassion of Jesus. 即ち、この話しには、イエス様の憐れみの力があります。Because of the love and compassion of Jesus, there is hope and comfort in the time of death, and in the time of trouble, and even more so in the time of happiness and joy. 愛と憐れみがあるので、人が死ぬ時に、困っている時に、またなお更に幸せと喜びの時でさえも、私たちには希望と慰めがあります。

There are times in our lives when it seems that life is one big funeral. 時に、人生は一つの大きなお葬式でしかないと感じる時があるでしょう。If someone is not dead, then someone is dying. たとえ人が死なくても、だれかが死にかけているでしょう。 If not physical death, then someone is being taken away from us by work or addiction or arguments or mental problems and the like. 又、物質的な死ではなくても、私達から人を引っ張るものがあります；例えば、仕事、くせ、喧嘩、精神や心の問題などです。　　Sometimes it seems that we are the ones who are dying. 時に死にかけているのは自分だと感じるかもしれません。The Psalmist called this "walking through the valley of the shadow of death." ダビデの詩篇の表現は「死の陰の谷を歩む」事です。 The hymnist called it "trials and temptations." ("What a Friend we have in Jesus") この死の陰の谷は｢試練｣や｢試み｣をもさします。

Jesus comes to us at times like this. このような時、イエス様は私達の所に来られます。He sees our tears and he knows our fears. イエス様は私達の涙と恐れを見ます。He has compassion, he feels our sorrow and pain, and our pain leads him to tears. 憐れみと同情で、私達の悲しみと痛みを感じます、そして、その痛みで、イエス様の目に涙が流れてくるでしょう。It may be hard to imagine Jesus in Heaven, sitting at the Right Hand of God with tears in his eyes, but he does sorrow for this world. 父なる神様の右の手に座る天国のイエス様の目に涙があると想像しにくいかも知れませんが、イエス様がこの世の為に悲しみを感じます。Those are the same tears he shed in the garden of Gethsemane. それはゲツセマネの園で流した涙と同じです。 They are the same tears that were shed when his good friend Lazarus died. 良い友達ラザロが死んだ時と同じ涙です。It is the same love and compassion that he had when the widow's son died. やもめの息子が死んだ時と同じ涙です。

What would have happened if the widow had sent Jesus away? その母親がイエス様を追い出したらどうなるでしょうか。 "Don't speak nonsense to me! ｢私に馬鹿な事を話さないでください。 Don't touch my son!" 私の子に手を触れないでください。｣That is what unbelief does. これは不信仰がする事です。 Unbelief refuses to let Jesus into our lives. 不信仰は、自分の人生の中にイエス様が入る事を許しません。Unbelief refuses the comfort and hope of God. 不信仰は神様の慰めと希望を拒みます。Unbelief only believes in the power of death and the devil, because death and the devil seem to be in control in the world. 不信仰は死と悪魔の力だけを信じます、何故ならば、死と悪魔しかこの世を支配していないように見えるからです。That is why it is so important to believe in God. ですから、神様を信じる事はとても大切です。Not only to believe in his almighty power, but to believe in his almighty love and compassion. 神様の全能の力だけではなくて、全能の愛と憐れみをも信じる事です。We believe that in his almighty love and compassion, Jesus gave up his almighty power to die on the cross to forgive our sin, and in this way to overcome the power of the death and the devil. その全能の愛と憐れみを持って、イエス様はご自分の全能の力を捨てて、私達の罪を赦す為に十字架上で死にました。このようにして、死と悪魔の力を征服しました。

Jesus touched the bier (the stretcher upon which the man was being carried) and said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." イエス様は、棺に近づいて手を触れられると、「若者よ、あなたに言う。起きなさい」と言われました。 In the same way, Jesus touches our places of death and sin. 同じように、イエス様は私達の死と罪の所にも手を触れます。He says to us, "I say to you, arise." 私達にも、「起きなさい」と言われます。And this is the power given us to rise. この力によって私達は立ち上がる事が出来ます。 This is to be born again. これは、再び生まれる事です。 It is to repent and believe. これは、悔い改めて信じる事です。 It is to rise and follow Jesus in our lives. これで、私達は立ち上がって、人生において、イエス様に従って生きます。 It is to rise and to live a life that is really alive. 起き上がって本当に生きる人生です。We are alive in Christ Jesus. イエス･キリストによって生きているからです。 In this faith we daily arise from the baptismal water and live in the power of the Holy Spirit. この信仰によって、毎日洗礼の水からあがって、聖霊の力によって生きるのです。
