誘惑されている時、約束を思い出します

March 1, 2009, Lent 1

Mark 1:12-13 (9-15)
¹² At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, ¹³ and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.

Genesis 9:8-17
⁸ Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: ⁹ "I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you ¹⁰ and with every living creature that was with you�the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you�every living creature on earth. ¹¹ I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth."

12 And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: ¹³ I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. ¹⁴ Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, ¹⁵ I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. ¹⁶ Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth."

　　17 So God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth."

9:8 神はノアおよび共にいる子らに言われた、9:9 「わたしはあなたがた及びあなたがたの後の子孫と契約を立てる。9:10 またあなたがたと共にいるすべての生き物、あなたがたと共にいる鳥、家畜、地のすべての獣、すなわち、すべて箱舟から出たものは、地のすべての獣にいたるまで、わたしはそれと契約を立てよう。9:11 わたしがあなたがたと立てるこの契約により、すべて肉なる者は、もはや洪水によって滅ぼされることはなく、また地を滅ぼす洪水は、再び起らないであろう」。9:12 さらに神は言われた、「これはわたしと、あなたがた及びあなたがたと共にいるすべての生き物との間に代々かぎりなく、わたしが立てる契約のしるしである。9:13 すなわち、わたしは雲の中に、にじを置く。これがわたしと地との間の契約のしるしとなる。9:14 わたしが雲を地の上に起すとき、にじは雲の中に現れる。9:15 こうして、わたしは、わたしとあなたがた、及びすべて肉なるあらゆる生き物との間に立てた契約を思いおこすゆえ、水はふたたび、すべて肉なる者を滅ぼす洪水とはならない。9:16 にじが雲の中に現れるとき、わたしはこれを見て、神が地上にあるすべて肉なるあらゆる生き物との間に立てた永遠の契約を思いおこすであろう」。9:17 そして神はノアに言われた、「これがわたしと地にあるすべて肉なるものとの間に、わたしが立てた契約のしるしである」。

誘惑されている時、約束を思い出します

２００９年３月１日、　受難節第一主日

Every year on the first Sunday of Lent, the Gospel reading is about the Temptation of Jesus. 毎年、受難節の最初の日曜日の福音書の日課は、イエス様の荒れ野での誘惑です。 Jesus was in the wilderness desert for 40 days. イエス様は４０日間荒れ野にいました。 He fasted. 断食しました。 He was tempted by Satan to prove that he was the Son of God in ways that would break his trust in God his Father. サタンによって誘惑されました。その誘惑はイエス様が神の子でありながら、父なる神様の信頼をこわすようにというサタンの試みでした。 He was tempted to give up suffering and death in order to save himself. 自分を救う為に苦しみと死を捨てるようにという誘惑でした。 But of course, in doing so, he would not be the Savior of mankind. しかしイエス様がそれをしましたら、私たち人間の救い主になりません。 And so usually have a sermon on how we can imitate Jesus and resist temptation that would destroy our faith in God.　ですから普通この日の説教とは、どのように私達がイエス様と同じように、私達の信仰をこわす誘惑に抵抗する事が出来かです。

I was surprised to find that the Old Testament lesson for today was from Genesis Chapter 9. しかし今日の旧約聖書の日課は、創世記９章であると見た時、非常に面白いと思いました。 That is the story at the end of the Flood when God promises to Noah and to all creation that he would not destroy the world again by a flood. その話しはの後に、再び全世界を洪水によって、この世を滅ぼされる事はないように、神様はご自分と契約を立てられます。その契約はモーセとすべての創造物に対するものです。 And as a sign of that Covenant Promise, God set the rainbow in the sky. そして、その約束のしるしとして、神様は空に虹を置きました。 Then God said, Genesis 9:16-17. "Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth. This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth."創世記9:16-17でこのように言われました、「虹が雲の中に現れるとき、わたしはこれを見て、神が地上にあるすべて肉なるあらゆる生き物との間に立てた永遠の契約を思いおこすであろう」。9:17 そして神はノアに言われた、「これがわたしと地にあるすべて肉なるものとの間に、わたしが立てた契約のしるしである。」

I was wondering why this story about Noah and the Flood should be chosen for today, the First Sunday in Lent. どうして受難節第一主日の為に、このノアと洪水の話が選ばれているかと不思議に思いました。 Maybe it is because it rained for 40 days and 40 nights, just like Jesus was in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights（Mt.4:2). もしかしたら、雨が四十日四十夜地上に降り続いた(創世記7:12)と同じようにイエス様も四十日間、昼も夜も断食したからでしょうか（ﾏﾀｲ4:2)。 The connection was not about fasting, because Noah took plenty of food for all the animals on the ark (Gen.6:21). ここに断食との関係はありません。すべての動物が十分食べる為に箱舟に食物を入れたからです(Gen.6:21)。 That leaves the theme of temptation. 残るのは誘惑のテーマです。 Who was tempted? 試みられたのはだれでしょうか。 First, Noah was. 先ずノアでした。 In the Bible, the word "tempt" often means "test." 聖書の中では、誘惑と言う言葉には、テストする意味がよくあります。 Noah was tested to see if he would carry out God�s command. ノアが神様の命令を果たすかどうかテストされました。 Surely the people around him jeered at him. ノアの回りにいた人々が、確かにノアを馬鹿にしたでしょう。 He warned them of the pending doom, but they ignored him. ノアは来るべき滅びを警告しましたが、彼らは彼を無視しました。 Then there was the huge task of building such a huge floating ark and preparing the food and the animals. そして、そのきょだいなく事だけが出来る箱を作って、動物とその食物を準備する大変な仕事がありました。 But through it all, Noah resisted the temptation to quit working and he finished building the ark. しかし、その働きを止める誘惑があっても、ノアはその誘惑にして、箱舟を作る事をえました。 Then the rains came for 40 days. そして４０日間の雨が来ました。 Then came the 150 days of floating aimlessly on the sea. １５０日間、海の上をさ迷いました。 But Noah did not give in the temptation of despair. しかしノアは絶望の誘惑に落ちいりませんでした。

In contrast to Noah who was a "righteous man, blameless among the people of his time and walked with God," (Gen.6:9), there were the millions of people on earth who gave in to temptation. 創世記6:9によりますと、ノアは「神に従うな人であった。ノアは神と共に歩んだ。」のですが、その反対に、地上の上にある数え切れない人々は、誘惑に陥りました。

Genesis 6:5-8 tells it this way. 創世記6:5-8はこのように説明します。

5 The LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. ⁶ The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. ⁷ So the LORD said, "I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth, men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air -- for I am grieved that I have made them." ⁸ But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.

6:5 主は、地上に人の悪が増し、常に悪いことばかりを心に思い計っているのを御覧になって、6:6 地上に人を造ったことを後悔し、心を痛められた。6:7 主は言われた。「わたしは人を創造したが、これを地上からぬぐい去ろう。人だけでなく、家畜も這うものも空の鳥も。わたしはこれらを造ったことを後悔する。」6:8 しかし、ノアは主の好意を得た。

The Lord God saw the wickedness of the earth. 主なる神様は地上の悪を見ました。 So he decided to destroy the world and start over with Noah and his family. それで世界を滅ぼして、ノアとノアの家族で新しい世界を作ろうと思いました。 God loved his world that he had created. 神様は御自分の創造された世を愛しました。 And so it grieved him, it pained his heart that it was so evil. それで悲しんで、悪のあまりのひどさに心が苦しいほど痛いでした。 And I am sure that it pained the heart of God to destroy the world, too. そして、この世を滅ぼす事も神様の心をしませ、しめたでしょう。 It was so painful that he promised never to do it again. 再び決して したくないほど苦しいでしょう。 God made a solemn promise, a covenant never to destroy the world again by a flood. 神様はい約束を立て、再び洪水によって世界を滅ぼさないように契約を立てました。 And the rainbow was the sign of the covenant. そして、その契約のしるしとは虹です。 The rainbow is like his signature, his official stamp. その虹は神様のサインのようで、神様のハンコのようです。 It was necessary to have a sign or signature on for this contract with creation. 全世界の創造物との契約にそのサインが必要でした。 Because you see, I think that God has been tempted many times to destroy the world again and again and again. 何故ならば、この世を滅ぼす誘惑が何回も何回も何回も神様にあったと思うからです。 If God had not made that promise then I think he would have destroyed the world again. もしその約束を立てなければ、神様は確かにこの世界を滅ぼしたでしょう。He has threatened and has made local cleansings. 脅しもって、地域的に小さな所を清めた事があります。 There is the story of Sodom and Gomorrah which were destroyed because of their wickedness. ソドムとゴモラの悪の為に、その２つの町を滅ぼしました。 After the Exodus from Egypt, God threatened to destroy the unfaithful Israelites in the wilderness, but Moses reminded God of his promise. 出エジプトの後に、不信仰なイスラエルの人々を、彼らの悪の為に滅ぼそうと神様が思いましたが、モーセは神様に、神様の約束を思い出させました。 500 years later, God did destroy the Northern Kingdom of Israel when they turned to idols. ５００年後イスラエルの北の王国が遇像礼拝に陥った時、神様はその国を滅ぼしました。 He destroyed the city of Jerusalem for its unfaithfulness. そしてエルサレムも、不信仰の為に滅ぼしました。 God should have destroyed the whole world because of sin. 実は神様は、全世界を罪の為に滅ぼすべきでしょう。 I am sure the world after the flood soon became as sinful as before the flood. 大洪水の後の人間は、すぐ大洪水の前の人間と同じ程度 罪深かったでしょう。 It is just as sinful today, too. 現在も同じように罪深いでしょう。 Humanly speaking, I am sure God has been tempted to destroy the world many times. 人間的に言いますと、神様は何回もこの世を滅ぼすように試みられたでしょう。

But God did not forget his promise. しかし神様は御自分の約束を忘れませんでした。 Rather than destroying the world, he sent a Savior. 世界を滅ぼすよりも、救い主を送りました。 This time it was not with an ark like at the time of Noah. 今度ノア時代のような箱舟ではありません。 It was with Jesus who on the cross was drowned in the sin of the world. イエス様は十字架上でこの世の罪の為に溺れてしまいました。 We too are drowned in the water of Baptism. 私達も洗礼の水によって溺れます。 But because we die with Jesus, we rise with Jesus. しかしイエス様と共に死ぬので、イエス様と共に生きかえります。 We are cleansed in the water of Baptism. バプテスマの水によって清められています。 The Cross is our Ark. 十字架は私達の箱舟です。 The Cross is our salvation in the time of temptation and sin and death.　十字架は誘惑や罪や死がある時、私達の救いです。

We have times of temptation. 私達には誘惑が来ます。 We have times that test our faith in God. 私達の神様への信仰を試みます。 We wonder about God�s love. 私達は神様の愛を疑います。 We wonder if God will really forgive us. 神様は本当に自分を赦して下さるか疑います。 We wonder if we will go to heaven. 自分が天国に行けるかどうか心配します。 We wonder if God will give us strength and health and love. 神様が自分に力と健康と愛を下さるかどうか考えます。 However, we never need to wonder about the promise of God. しかし神様の約束について、決して心配して疑う必要がありません。 God gave us wonderful signs of his promise. 神様は素晴らしい約束のしるしを下さいました。 He gave the sign of the rainbow, the sign of the cross, the sign of the empty tomb, and the sign of the cross on our foreheads when we were baptized. そのしるしとは、虹を始め、十字架も、空っぽのお墓も、そして洗礼を受ける時に私達の額に書かれた十字架です。 And so Baptism becomes a flood to save us. それで洗礼は私達を救い出す洪水になります。 And those whom we love are also on the Ark of God's love, mercy, and salvation. そして、私達の愛する人もその神様の愛と憐れみと救いの箱舟に乗っています。
