I like the greeting "Peace." 私は「ピース」の挨拶が好きです。I think it is fun to give the "V" for "victory" sign.
勝利の「ビクトリー」の「Ｖ」サインをすることも楽しいと思います。After the fighting comes victory and final peace. 戦いの後に勝利、そして最後に平和が来ます。 In some Christian art, Jesus gives the "peace sign," and when he holds up his hand, you can see the mark of the nail that held him on the cross. あるキリスト教の芸術の中では、甦られたイエス様は「ピースサイン」をしています。御手を上げると、イエス様を十字架に付けた釘の後をその手の平に見る事が出来ます。It is only through the cross and death that Jesus brought victory over death and the devil and so gives us true peace. 十字架と死を通す事だけによって、イエス様は死や悪魔の上の勝利を得たので、誠の平和を下さいます。It is peace that comes through forgiveness and reconciliation, when enemies no longer fight, when there are no bad feelings between people, or between people and God. その平和は、赦しと和解によって来ます。その平和の時に、敵がもう戦わないし、人間と人間の間には憎しみがないし、神様と人間の間にも争いがありません。 And so the peace sign is a sign that gives blessing. それで「ピースサイン」は祝福を与えるサインです。
Jesus said to his disciples, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." イエス様は弟子達に言われました、「わたしは、平和をあなたがたに残し、わたしの平和を与える。わたしはこれを、世が与えるように与えるのではない。心を騒がせるな。おびえるな。」Jesus knew his disciples, and he knew that their hearts were very much troubled and that they were very afraid. 弟子達の心と思いが非常に騒がせられて、非常に恐れているとイエス様は分かりました。This was the evening before Jesus was arrested and killed. これは、イエス様が逮捕され、殺された前の日の晩でした。 The disciples knew that the Jews planned to kill Jesus. 弟子達は、ユダヤ人がイエス様を殺そうと計画していたと分かりました。 They were afraid for Jesus, as well as for themselves. ですから、イエス様の事も、イエス様の弟子である事から、自分達の事も恐れました。 Some of the disciples did not understand Jesus when he talked about his death and resurrection and ascension. 御自分の死と復活と昇天についてのイエス様の話が、分からない弟子達がいました。When Jesus said he was going to go away and then come back to them, maybe they thought he was going to run away to exile in Egypt or something, maybe they thought he would die and come back at the end of the world. イエス様が旅に行って帰るだろうか、エジプトのような安全な所に逃げるだろうか、死んで世の終わりに戻るだろうかなど考えたでしょう。But Jesus meant his death and resurrection, and his ascension. しかし、イエス様は御自分の死、復活と昇天を話しました。 After those things happened, then they understood, but now they were confused and afraid. その出来事の後で始めて弟子達は理解しますが、今の時点では、心が混乱して恐れました。 So Jesus had to give them peace for right then, and for after his ascension, too. ですから、今の為にも、昇天してからの時も、平和を弟子達に与えなければなりませんでした。
"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." 「わたしは、平和をあなたがたに残し、わたしの平和を与える。わたしはこれを、世が与えるように与えるのではない。心を騒がせるな。おびえるな。」The peace that the world gives is nice, of course, but Jesus has promised something even better. この世が与える平和は勿論ありがたいものですが、イエス様が約束するものははるかに良いものです。The peace of this world lasts only until the next war. この世の平和は、次の戦争までしかありしません。 It lasts only until the next time we fight with someone. 今度誰かと喧嘩するまでしかありしません。 It lasts only until we get sick or worried again. 今度病気になるまでしかありしません。 Some people might say there is no peace at all in this world, it only comes when we die, and then they write on the tomb stone, "Rest in Peace." ある人によりますと、この世の中には平和が決してない、死ぬまでに平和がないので、墓石に「平和の休み、安らかに寝る」と書きます。 That is too pessimistic. それは悲観的すぎると私は思います。 The world does offer a lot of peace. この世は平和を与えます。 There is the peace of money in your pocket and a good, paid-up insurance policy. 例えば、ポケットにお金があれば、健康保険があれば安心です。 There is the peace of knowing you have friends or parents who will help you in any problem. どんな問題があっても、あなたを助けて下さる友達や親がいると分かれば、安心です。 People search for peace in many places: in nature, in sports, in entertainment, in religion, in self-help classes. 人は平和を多くの所に捜します：自然の中に、スポーツの中に、娯楽の中に、宗教の中に、身の上相談の中に、趣味の中にもです。
There is a difference in the peace that Jesus gives. イエス様が与える平和は違います。Whereas worldly peace is to find calm between times of trouble, Jesus gives calm in the middle of the trouble. 世の平和は、争いと争いの間の静けさでしたら、イエス様は争いの中の静けさを与えます。As Psalm 23 says, "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me." 詩編２３編が言うようです、「死の陰の谷を行くときも、わたしは災いを恐れない。あなたがわたしと共にいてくださる。」There is peace because Jesus is with us. イエス様が私達と共にいるので、平和があります。There is peace because we are not alone. 自分が一人ではないので、安心があります。In today's Gospel lesson Jesus says that the disciples, and therefore we too, will not be alone. 今日の福音書の中では、弟子達、ですから私達も、決して独りではないとイエス様は言われます。Jesus will be with them. イエス様が彼らと共にいます。 The Father will be with them. 父なる神様も彼らと共にいます。And the Holy Spirit will be with them. 聖霊も彼らと共にいます。 And this is not just an occasional event. そして、これは時々だけではありません。 Jesus is not with us only when we are praying or when we are in church. 私達が祈っている時や教会に通っている時だけではなくて、イエス様がいつも私達と共にいます。 I like the expression that Jesus uses, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him." イエス様が話した表現が好きです、「わたしを愛する人は、わたしの言葉を守る。わたしの父はその人を愛され、父とわたしとはその人のところに行き、一緒に住む。」 I like that expression, "we will come to him and make our home with him." 「その人のところに行き、一緒に住む」という言葉が好きです。 Christ is not a visitor in our lives, he is a permanent resident. キリストは、私達の人生に時々来るお客様ではなくて、定住者です。 Our hearts are the place where the Holy Spirit lives, 私達の心は聖霊の住まいです。Ephesians 2:22, "And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit." エペソ２：２２，「キリストにおいて、あなたがたも共に建てられ、霊の働きによって神の住まいとなるのです。」 The Holy Spirit is not like a worker that gets transferred all the time. 聖霊は、会社の転勤族のサラリーマンのようではありません。 He has a job to do in our hearts, and He stays there! 私達の心の中に仕事があり、そこに残ります。 When working conditions are bad or there is an economic crisis, workers usually move or find new work. 仕事の環境が悪くならば、経済状態が悪い時、働く人はよく移動して、新しい仕事を捜します。 But when our heart has problems, that is when the Holy Spirit is working the hardest. しかし、私達の心の状態が悪い時、その時こそ、聖霊はよく働いて下さいます。 When we are troubled, lonely, worried, sick, fighting, at war: this is when the Holy Spirit works the hardest. 問題がある時、淋しい時、心配する時、病気になった時、争いや戦争がある時こそ、聖霊が働きます。 We may feel unworthy, we may think our sin will drive the Holy Spirit out of our sinful hearts. But it is the work of the Holy Spirit to make us holy. 自分には価値が無いと思いまして、自分の罪が聖霊を自分の罪深い心から追い出すと感じるかも知れませんが、聖霊の働きとは、私達を聖なる者にする事です。 This is done by proclaiming through the Word and Sacraments the forgiveness of sins through Jesus Christ. これをするために、聖霊は、御言葉と聖礼典において、イエス・キリストによる罪の赦しを述べ伝えます。 In faith we accept the grace of Christ. 信仰によって、私達はキリストの恵みを受け入れます。 The expression in today's Gospel lesson is, "But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you." 今日の福音書の表現は、「しかし、弁護者、すなわち、父が私の名によってお遣わしになる聖霊が、あなたがたにすべてのことを教え、私が話した事をことごとく思い起こさせてくださる。」 He will teach and remind us about the Gospel, the Good News of what Christ has done for us in his death and resurrection. 教えて思い起こさせて下さるのは、福音です、即ち、御自分の死と復活によってキリストが私達の為になさった良い知らせです。 And this gives us peace: peace with God, peace with ourselves, and then peace with others.そして、これこそが私達に平和を下さいます：神様との平和、自分との平和、他の人との平和です。
Is the peace of Christ going to end wars and poverty and disease and greed? キリストの平和は、この地上の戦争や貧困や病気や欲張りを終わらせるでしょうか。 Eventually, yes, and St. John saw that heavenly vision in Revelations 21:22-27. 最終的にはします、聖ヨハネがその天国の幻を見て、黙示録２１章２２−２７節で顕わしました。 Will there be that sort of heavenly peace on earth? この地上に、その天国的な平和が来るでしょうか。 If so, then this earth will have become part of heaven, and the old world will have passed away. 来ましたら、この古い世は去って、新しい世は天国の一部になるでしょう。 That is the work of Christ, and we leave it to Him. それはキリストの働きで、キリストにまかせます。 But Christ has given us that vision. しかし、キリストは私達にその幻を与えられました。 As we live now in this sinful world of war and hate and disease, the Holy Spirit has taught us the Gospel and reminded us of the love of God. 私達がこの戦争と憎しみと病気がある罪深い世の中に今住んでいますが、聖霊は私達に福音を教えて、神様の愛を思い起こして下さいました。 It is this love that makes Christians want to love other people. この愛があるので、キリスト信者は他の人を愛します。 It is this love that makes us work for peace in this world, peace in all of its forms: big and small, physical and emotional, private and for the whole world. この愛のために、私達は世界平和の為に働きます、すべての形の平和です：大きなものも小さいものも、物質的なものも霊的や感情的なものも、個人的なものも、全世界のものもです。
Finally, how do you really make the "peace sign"? 最後に、「ピースサイン」をどのようにしますか。 Is it the "V sign" 「Ｖサイン」でしょうか、or the sign of the cross? 
それとも 十字架のサインでしょうか。
May the peace of God which passes all human understanding in you hearts and minds, through Christ Jesus our Lord. 
どうか、人知ではとうてい測り知る事の出来ない、神の平安があなたがたの心と思いとを、キリストイエスにあって守るように。Amen. アーメン。
