From Babble to Pentecost

創世記１１：１ー９
世界中は同じ言葉を使って、同じように話していた。東の方から移動してきた人々は、シンアルの地に平野を見つけ、そこに住み着いた。彼らは、「れんがを作り、それをよく焼こう」と話し合った。石の代わりにれんがを、しっくいの代わりにアスファルトを用いた。彼らは、「さあ、天まで届く塔のある町を建て、有名になろう。そして、全地に散らされることのないようにしよう」と言った。主は降って来て、人の子らが建てた、塔のあるこの町を見て、言われた。「彼らは一つの民で、皆一つの言葉を話しているから、このようなことをし始めたのだ。これでは、彼らが何を企てても、妨げることはできない。我々は降って行って、直ちに彼らの言葉を混乱させ、互いの言葉が聞き分けられぬようにしてしまおう。」主は彼らをそこから全地に散らされたので、彼らはこの町の建設をやめた。こういうわけで、この町の名はバベルと呼ばれた。主がそこで全地の言葉を混乱（バラル）させ、また、主がそこから彼らを全地に散らされたからである。
Genesis 11:1-9
The Tower of BabelNow the whole world had one language and a common speech. As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building. The LORD said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. That is why it was called Babel?because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
使徒２章
五旬祭の日が来て、一同が一つになって集まっていると、突然、激しい風が吹いて来るような音が天から聞こえ、彼らが座っていた家中に響いた。そして、炎のような舌が分かれ分かれに現れ、一人一人の上にとどまった。すると、一同は聖霊に満たされ、“霊”が語らせるままに、ほかの国々の言葉で話しだした。さて、エルサレムには天下のあらゆる国から帰って来た、信心深いユダヤ人が住んでいたが、この物音に大勢の人が集まって来た。そして、だれもかれも、自分の故郷の言葉が話されているのを聞いて、あっけにとられてしまった。人々は驚き怪しんで言った。「話をしているこの人たちは、皆ガリラヤの人ではないか。
Acts 2
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language?
God looked down from heaven, and way down below, there was some construction going on down there on the Plain of Shinar.
神様は高い天国から見下ろして、はるかに遠い所のシンアルの地の平野（へいや）で何かの建設が始められているのを見ました。 It was supposed to be a tower that would reach to heaven, but it wasn't anywhere high enough to be near God in heaven. それは天まで届く塔のはずでしたが、天国の神様に届くには、とっても低いでした。 It was like God couldn't see the puny thing, so he had to come down to see the city and the tower that the people were building. まるで、小さくて見えないので、神様は天から降りて、人々が造った町と塔を見に来られました。 They were trying to make a big tower, but they were using inferior building materials. 人間は大きな塔を建てようと思いましたが、悪い建設の材料を使いました。 Rather than strong stone, they used bricks; rather than concrete mortar, they used tar. 丈夫な石の変わりにレンガを使い、コンクリートのしっくいの代わりにアスファルトを使いました。 Tar would stick things together for a while, but in the hot Middle East summer, the whole tower would collapse. アスファルトが物を一時的に接続（せつぞく）させる事が出来ますが、暑い中東の夏になりますと、その塔は崩（くず）れてしまうでしょう。Ancient towers like the pyramids often had a temple or altar on the top for sacrifices. ピラミッドのような物を含め、昔の時代の塔の上には、神殿や犠牲の為の祭壇がありました。 Maybe the people of Babel wanted their tower to reach the heavens for that purpose. もしかしたら、バベルの人々は、自分の塔が天に届くように造ったのは、その理由かも知れません。 If the temple was for pagan worship, that may be one reason why God was so disturbed by the tower. もしその神殿が異教の宗教の礼拝の為でしたら、神様はその塔の建設が嫌いでしたでしょう。 The pride and ambition of people was too dangerous for God to let it go unchecked. 人間のプライドと野心が危ないと神様は思いました。 So God confused their language in order that they could not understand each other. それで、お互いの言葉が聞き分けられないように、神様は彼らの言葉を混乱（こんらん）させました。 In this way the building project was abandoned and the people scattered from there over all the earth. このようにして、人々はその塔と町の建設をやめてしまい、全地に散（ち）らされました。 The confusion of languages sounds like a curse, but it is also a blessing to control the pride and sinfulness of people.言葉の混乱は呪いのようですが、同時に、人間のプライドと罪を防（ふせ）ぐ為の祝福にもなりました。
But even as people scattered across the face of the earth, so sin too scattered over the face of the earth. しかし、人々が全地に散らされて行くと同時に、罪も、全地に散らされました。 The sin of pride too scattered over the face of the earth. プライドの罪も全地に散らされました。 People became proud of their nation or their race or their culture. 人々は自分の国、自分の人種（じんしゅ）、自分の文化にプライドを持ちました。 People continued false worship which also scattered over the face of the earth.又、偶像礼拝も全地に散らされてしまいました。
Then came Jesus Christ. そして、イエス・キリストが来られました。 The gospel message is John 3:16, "God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten son, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." ヨハネ３：１６の福音の良い知らせはこれです、「神は、その独り子をお与えになったほどに、世を愛された。独り子を信じる者が一人も滅びないで、永遠の命を得るためである。」 "God so loved the world." 「神は世を愛された」と。 And again God came down to this world. それで、神様は再びこの世に降りて来られました。 His love would unify the world and would reverse the curse of Babel. 神様の愛はバベルの呪いを逆にして、この世を一つにします。 His love was not that he created a new universal language, but that he spoke to all people in their own language. この愛で、世界中で使う新しい言葉を作る事をしないで、神様はすべての人々に自分達の言葉で話す事です。That is the message of Acts Chapter Two.これは使徒行伝２章のメッセージです。
The Tower that replaced the Tower of Babel was the Tower of the Cross. バベルの塔の代わりになった塔とは、十字架の塔です。 It was lifted up. それが上に上げられた物です。 It was not that the Tower of the Cross reached up to heaven, but rather it was the place where heaven reached down to earth. 十字架の塔が天国に届く訳ではなく、むしろ十字架は、天国がこの世に届く場所です。 There on the cross, Jesus Christ was God Almighty come down to earth. 十字架上で、全能の神様であるイエス・キリストは、地上に降りて来られました。 By taking the sin of the world upon himself and dying to forgive that sin, he did what the Tower of Babel could not do: that is, he made a name for them, he gave his name to all believers and gave them eternal salvation so that they could not be scattered away from him.ご自分の上に世の罪を取って、その罪を赦す為に死ぬ事によって、イエス様は、バベルの塔が出来なかった事をしました、即ち、信者達にご自分の名前を与え、ご自分から散らされないように、永遠の命を下さいました。
This world is still scattered by different languages, cultures, and false religions. この世は、まだ、多くの国語や文化や偽の宗教によって散らされています。 We all know the effect of this on our own lives. 私達、一人一人の人生にこの影響があります。 We know how pride affects us, the pride of others and our own pride, too. プライドは、即ち、他の人のプライドも自分のプライドも、私達の人生に影響を与えます。 There is the fear of others which leads to intolerance, prejudice, and hate. それで、他の人を恐れますので、いじめと差別と憎しみがあります。 We build towers to protect ourselves and shut others out. 自分を守る為に、又、他の人を入れないように、自分の塔を建てます。 But God will destroy our towers because they are built with shoddy materials, that is, with self love, pride, and sin. しかし、神様は私達の塔を破壊（はかい）します。何故ならば、悪い建材で作られているからです、即ち、自己中心的な愛、プライドと罪によって立てられているからです。
Towers will fall, church steeples will tumble, 塔は落ち、教会の塔も落ちるでしょう。 but the cross of Christ will stand forever. しかしキリストの十字架は永遠に立ちます。 The cross is the tower that reaches to heaven and takes us to heaven. 十字架は天国に届き、私達を天国に送る塔です。
On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit gathers people from all nations and proclaims the Gospel of Jesus Christ. ペンテコステには、聖霊はすべての国々の人々を集めて、イエス・キリストの福音を宣べ伝えます。 We remember this in our worship and prayer today. 今日の礼拝と祈りの中でそれをおぼえます。 We thank the Lord that the Gospel is spoken to us in the language we understand. 福音が自分の理解する国語で話されている事を主に感謝します。
