What is a "saint"? 「聖徒」とは何でしょうか。I want to speak of three categories of saints. 聖徒の三つの種類について話したいと思います。There are 1) the famous saints of old, 1）昔の有名な聖徒、2) all those saints who have died in the Lord, 2）主なる神様を信じて死んだ聖徒、and 3) all the living saints who are following in their footsteps of faith and witness. そして3）その聖徒の信仰と証の足跡（あしあと）に従っている現在生きている聖徒です。

1. The first category of saints is those saints who have the title of Saint before their name. 最初の聖徒の種類は、名前の前に「聖」と言う肩書が来ます。This is like St. Paul, St. Peter, St. Francis and the others. 例えば、聖ペテロ、聖パウロ、聖フランシスコなどです。These are the great men and women of the church, the heroes of our faith. これは、教会の偉大な人達で、私達の信仰の英雄達です。 These are the people we look to for guidance and for an example of how we should live our lives as Christians. どのように私達が自分の人生をクリスチャンとして送るべきかと考える時、その導きと模範(もはん)の為にこの人達を見ます。 Some of these saints were teachers, この聖徒のある人は教師でしたし、some were active in charity, 聖フランシスのように貧しい人の為に良く働いた者です。and others were martyrs who died for the faith. ローマ皇帝ネロの迫害によってキリストにある信仰の為に殉教者として死んだ多くのクリスチャン達などの聖徒達です。Today we remember them, honor them, and try to live the Gospel as they did. 今日、私達は彼らを覚えて記念し、尊敬(そんけい)して、彼らと同じように福音によって生きようと思います。

2. The second category of saints is all those people who have died in the faith. 二つ目の聖徒の種類は信仰を持って死んだ人です。Most are not famous Christians. この中の多くの人はまったく有名ではない普通のクリスチャンです。 They are ordinary people who believed in Jesus as their Savior and who have been called by the Lord to eternal life in heaven. 彼らは普通(ふつう)の人で、イエス様が自分の救い主として信じて、永遠の命に天国の主に召された者です。They can be our grandparents, family members, and other Christian friends or acquaintances. 例えば、その人は、私達のお爺さんやお婆さん、ほかの家族の人や他のクリスチャンの友達、知人（ちじん）などです。Today we remember them, honor them, and try to remember the good that was in their hearts so that we can be like them. 今日その人達を覚えて、尊敬し、その人々の心の中の良い事を思い出して、そして、彼らと同じようになります。If we knew them personally we also know their sins and their faults. よく知っている人でしたら、その人の罪や欠点も知っているでしょう。We do not want to copy the bad parts; rather we forgive them, just as Christ has forgiven them. その人は私達に悪い事をして、私達を傷つけたでしょう。しかしその罪を赦します。なぜならキリストが私達を赦して下さったように、彼らをも赦して下さったと知っているからです。

3. And the third category of saints is all the people in the world alive today who believe in Jesus as their Savior. 三つ目の聖徒の種類は、イエス様を自分の救い主として信じて、現在この地上に生きているすべての人です。Their sins are forgiven through the blood of the Lamb. 神の子羊の血によって罪が赦されました。They have been made holy through the death and resurrection of Christ. キリストの死と復活によって清められて聖なる者になります。That makes them saints. それで聖人です。This is the category that we today are in. 　 私達今日、この聖徒の種類です。This day on the church calendar is not for giving honor to those alive. 今日の教会カレンダーは、生きている人々を記念する日ではありません。However, in remembering the saints of old, we are blessed and our faith is made stronger. しかし、昔の聖徒を覚える事によって、私達が祝福されて、私達の信仰が強められています。 That is why this day is important to us. それで、この日は私達にとって大切です。 We are given hope. 希望が与えられています。We hope to join the saints in eternal life. 永遠の命の中で私達が聖徒達と加えられると言う希望です。We look forward to the day when we can see our loved ones again. 再び私達の愛する者と天国で会う日を待ち望みます。And so today is not a sad memorial day, it is not like a funeral. ですから、今日は淋しい記念会ではありません。お葬式のようではありません。 It is a day of rejoicing. むしろお祝いの日です。

Amen. アーメン。

Let us confess our faith in the same words that the saints also have confessed their baptismal faith in the words of the Apostles’ Creed. 聖徒達が自分達の信仰を告白したと同じ使徒信条の言葉で、私達の洗礼の信仰を告白しましょう。
