Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth.” イエス様は言われました。｢あなたがたは地の塩である。｣ Salt is very useful and very beneficial to the earth. 塩の使い方は多くて、この地にとって大切なものです。Likewise Christians are also supposed to be useful and very beneficial to the earth. 同じように、キリスト信者はこの地にとって大切なものです。Salt makes food taste better. 塩は食べ物の味を良くします。In the same way, we are to make this world a better place. 同じように、私達がこの世をより良い所にします。Using the words of the Beatitudes, we are to hunger and thirst for justice, be merciful, pure in heart, work for peace, and witness our faith in times of persecution. 山上の説教の「幸い」の言葉によりますと、私達は正義の為に飢え渇きます。憐み深い、心の清い、平和を造る、迫害の時に信仰を告白する者です。In our prayers and work, we work to preserve this world from evil and injustice, to add flavor and culture and joy to the earth.　私達の祈りと仕事に於いて、この世を悪と不正義から守ったり、この地に味をつけて、文化と喜びをあたえます。

It does not take much salt to flavor food. 食べ物に味をつける為には、塩は沢山要りません。Just a sprinkle or two is enough. ほんの少しふりかければ良いです。 It is amazing what just a few Christians can do in society. 社会の中で、クリスチャンの数が少なくても、出来る事が驚くほど多いです。Look at Japan. 日本を見ましょう。Only about 1% of the population is Christian, but the Christian influence can be felt in many areas. 日本のクリスチャンは人口1%にもなりません。しかし、クリスチャンの影響を多くの分野で見る事が出来ます。This started as soon as the missionaries started to preach the Gospel in Japan. クリスチャンの宣教師が日本で福音を述べ伝え始めた時、その影響が広がりました。In Japan, the church was the first to bring education to everyone, especially in the areas of kindergarten and education for women. すべての人々に教育を与える必要な事は教会の教えです。特に子供の幼稚園と女子(じょし)教育です。 And also, social welfare and reform and charity have been pushed by Christians, to the extent that the local governments have learned that it is their responsibility to take care of their citizens. 又、社会福祉や社会改革や慈善が教会の運動でした。Just one more obvious Christian influence is that Sunday is a day off in Japan.　又、キリスト教の目ですぐ見える影響の一つは、日曜日は休みの日である事です。

It does not take much salt. 塩の量は少しだけで良いです。Have you ever got salt in a wound? 傷口に塩が入った事がありますか。It may indeed help to cleanse the cut or scrape, but it stings like crazy! 傷にある雑菌（ざっきん）を殺すかも知れませんが、すごく痛いです。Sometimes we Christians are like that. 私達クリスチャンがそのようです。That is part of our work as being salt. 私達の仕事の一部は塩のように働く事です。There are wounds in our society. 私達の社会には傷口があります。When Christians speak their conscience which comes from their faith, it can sting. クリスチャンが自分の信仰から来る良心を話せば、ずきずきします。 People say, “Don’t preach at me.” 人は「私に説教しないでくれ」と言います。People do not want to hear words of condemnation, but it is often necessary for health and growth. 人は裁きの言葉を聞きたくありません。しかし健康の為に、成長の為に必要です。Christians should always be good people, but we do not always have to be nice. クリスチャンはいつも親切で良い人ですが、やさしい過ぎる事も良くありません。 Salt can bring out the wonderful flavor of food; our well-seasoned words can bring out the best of people. 塩は食べ物の美味しさを出します。同じように、味のある言葉が人々の中から、その人の一番良い性格を引き出す事が出来ます。But there is also a time to be the salt that stings and cleanses. しかし塩には、ずきずきして、ものを清める時もあります。But we need to have the wisdom of the Holy Spirit to give our words enough salt to be good, but not too much to damage. 聖霊の知恵は大切です。私達の言葉には、良い事が出来る十分な塩があるでしょうが、害を与えないように、あまり多くしたくありません。Salt can make iron rust, eventually destroying it. We do not want to destroy other people. 塩によって鉄がさびて、破壊されます。私達は人を破壊したくありません。

Jesus had a lot of salt in his words. イエス様の言葉には塩がたっぷりありました。He gave people hope and joy, and helped them get fullness out of life, to get the full flavor of God’s blessings. 人々に希望と喜びを与えました。完全な神様の祝福の味のある人生を生きる事が出来るように力を与えました。But he condemned the evil of his day. しかし、彼の時代の悪を裁きました。 He rubbed salt in the sinful wounds of his enemies. 敵の罪深い傷口に塩をもみ入れました。So they tried to destroy him by crucifying him. ですから、敵が彼を殺そうと思って十字架にかけました。 But in that very action, he took upon himself our sin. しかし、その事によって、イエス様は御自分の上に私達の罪を取って下さいました。Like salt, he purified us. 塩のように私達を清めます。In his forgiveness and love, we are preserved for eternal life. 彼の赦しと愛によって、私達は永遠の命をいただきます。

Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.” イエス様は言われました、「あなたがたは地の塩である。だが塩に塩気がなくなれば、その塩は何によって塩味が付けられよう。もはや何の役にも立たず、外に投げ捨てられ、人々に踏みつけられるだけである。」 Or maybe it would be like keeping the cap screwed tightly on the salt shaker bottle. 又、塩が入っている塩かけのビンのふたがしかっり閉められているようでしょう。It may be white and pretty to look at, but it is not being put to use見ると白くて綺麗でしょうが、使わなければ役に立ちません。. It is of no value for the Kingdom of God. 神の国の為に価値がありません。Our salt is the Holy Spirit who gives us faith. 私達の塩とは、私達に信仰を与える聖霊です。In this faith we pray and worship and live our lives as Christians. この信仰によって私達は祈ったり、礼拝したり、クリスチャンとして毎日生きたりします。 Christ made this world a better place. キリストはこの世をより良いものにしました。 We continue that work which Jesus gave us. 私達はイエス様から与えられた働きを続きます。We are the salt of the earth. 私達は地の塩です。

You are the salt of the earth. 「あなたがたは地の塩である。」

But in Mexico, you are the hot pepper of the earth. イエス様はメキシコの子供達に「あなたがたは地のホットペッパ」と言えるでしょう。

We are to give the world a good taste, to make the world interesting, and fun.

私達は世に良い味を与えます、面白くします、楽しくします。

India, curry　　インドではカレー

Korea, kimuchi　　韓国でキムチ

Japan, wasabi　　日本でわざび

And to little children, You are the sugar of the earth. So be sweet little kids!

小さい子供に、あなたがたは地の砂糖です。
