Jesus gives two illustrations to show that the commitment to Christ is to be real and earnest. キリストに従うという為の決心は、真心からのものでなければならないと教える為に、イエス様は２つの例え話を言われました。Building a "tower" is an expensive project. 先ず、大きな塔を建てる為にはかなり費用がかかります。Jesus probably meant, not a water tower or a guard tower, but a monument tower.　　The disciple's whole life is to be a grand, lofty monument to God's glory. 弟子の生涯はキリストの栄光を記念する素晴らしい、綺麗な塔であるはずです。What a pity if it remains unfinished, a monument to the sinner's folly and the bricks become only stumbling blocks on the way to heaven. 建設を完成しなければ、もったいないですし、罪人の愚かさを示す物になったら、もしそのレンガが天国への道の障害物/つまずきになったら残念です。To make a tower is expensive; to raise a cross shaped tower is costly too. 塔を建てるためには、お金が沢山かかります。同じように十字架の形の塔も値段が高いです。The fact is we don't have the resources. しかし実際には、私達には資産や資源がありません。 In the last verse of today's Gospel lesson, Jesus said, "Any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple." 今日の福音者の最後にイエス様は言われました、「自分の持ち物を一切捨てないならば、あなたがたのだれ一人としてわたしの弟子ではありえない」と。If we have given up everything, we have nothing. すべてを捨てたら、もう何もありません。 We have nothing to build a cross-like-tower. 十字架の塔を建てる為に何もありません。We have even given up our claim to offerings and to our good deeds and good opinions. 自分の献金、自分の良い業、自分の正しい意見に基づいているプライドも、もうありません。We can't even claim merit for bearing our cross. 自分の十字架を背負った事の業でさえにも、得点がありません。Jesus would say, イエス様はこのように言うでしょう： "Was it heavy with the sins of the world? 「あなたの十字架は世の罪の為に重かったでしょうか。 No, it wasn't. そうではないでしょう。Was it heavy with your own sin? 自分自身の罪の為に重かったでしょうか。No, because that was carried on my cross! それもないでしょう。あなたの罪が私の十字架上にあったでしょう。 I even had to give you grace and the Holy Spirit to carry your cross. その上、あなたが自分の十字架を背負う為に、恵みと聖霊を与えなければなりませんでした。Your cross is a sign that you have given up everything to follow me." あなたの十字架は、あなたが私に従う為にすべてを捨てたしるしでした。We are bankrupt. 経済の表現を使いますと、私達は倒産の状態です。Only that we find that Jesus carried his cross for us. ただ、イエス様が御自分の十字架を私達の為に背負って下さった事が分かります。 He carried the burdens of the cross and our sin. 十字架や私達の罪である重荷を背負って下さいました。Then on that cross that lifted him up, he died to forgive that sin. そして、御自分を上に上げられた十字架上で、その罪を赦すために死にました。It is that forgiveness and grace which gives us the power and confidence to carry our crosses. この赦しと恵みによって、私達が自分達の十字架を背負う力と自信があります。

　　Then there is the illustration of the king about to go to war against another king. そして、王様同士の戦争の例え話があります。Can he defeat the other king's 20,000 men with his own 10,000? 「二万の兵を率いて進軍して来る敵を、自分の一万の兵で迎え撃(う)つことができる」でしょうか。 Probably not, so he sends a delegation to ask for terms of peace, which might mean paying tribute money and taxes and perhaps losing territory. 多分出来ないだろうと思うので、「使節を送って、和を求める」でしょう。その和の条件はお金やみつぎものを払って、自分の国の領域(りょういき)を失うことでしょう。Discipleship means war against three great enemies: 弟子になると、３つの大きな敵と戦います：the devil, the unbelieving world and our own sinful nature (S.C., L.P.3). 悪魔、不信仰の世界、と私達の罪深い性質です。But the three is like an overwhelming force of 20,000 troops, twice as strong as our own 10,000. この３つの敵はその二万の兵隊のようで、私達の一万の兵隊では全然足りません。In other words, if we rely on our own power and resources, our own good intentions and wit; then we will surely fail. 言い換えますと、自分の力や自分の資産に頼りましたら、自分の良い計画や自分の能力に頼りましたら、必ず失敗します。The point is not that we must surrender to the enemy or that we try to escape the fight from the beginning. ですから敵に降参する事や戦う前に逃げる訳ではありません。That is impossible for the person who wants to follow Jesus. イエス様に従いたいと思う人のために、それは不可能です。 St. Paul said in Ephesians 6:10-17 that we fight the good fight of faith by putting on the armor of God. エペソ人への手紙６章には、聖パウロは言われたのは、私達が神の武具を身に着けて、信仰の良い戦いをします。We need that, because if we are following Jesus, we are following him into battle against the devil and the world. それが必要なのは、イエス様に従うならば、悪魔やこの世と戦う為にイエス様の後をついて行くからです。Jesus counted the costs. イエス様は費用を計算しました。 Before he left heaven, he knew there would be at least one casualty. 天国を出る前に、少なくとも一人の死者が出ると分かりました。Jesus knew that when he did battle with the devil, that he would die on the cross. 悪魔と戦うと、自分が十字架上で死ぬと分かりました。And yet it was that very act of dying that made Jesus the Victor! しかし、その死ぬことによって、イエス様は勝利者になりました！On the third day he rose again! ３日目に復活しました！Jesus did not ask for terms of peace, but rather he dictated them to the devil! イエス様は和の条件を求めた訳ではなくて、その和の条件を悪魔に宣言しました。The terms of peace were of forgiveness, our innocence, our release from death and hell, and eternal life in heaven.即ち、罪の赦し、私達の無罪、私達の死と地獄からの解放、私達の天国での永遠の命です。

　　If a person knows the cost of the building, if he realizes the strength of the foe, and if he recognizes his own poverty and weakness as a sinner, then he should despair, that is give up, to realize that it is impossible to be a disciple. 人は建設費がいくらかかるか分かれば、敵の強さが分かれば、そして、自分の貧困(ひんこん)と罪の為の無力さが分かれば、失望するでしょう。あきらめるでしょう。弟子になることが不可能である事が分かるでしょう。This despair might mean rejecting Christ and the cross.その失望のために、キリストやその十字架を拒否kyohiする事になるかも知れません。We might decide not to be a Christian. クリスチャンにならないかも知れません。We might decide not to take up the tower-cross or to meet the enemy of our faith. その十字架の形の塔を捨てて、信仰の敵から逃げるかも知れません。Or the despair might mean that we look to Jesus. 又、失望(しつぼう)の為に、イエス様だけにたよるかも知れません。We have to rely completely on the grace, love, and forgiveness of Christ. キリストの赦し、愛と恵みに完全に頼(たよ)らなければなりません。Jesus said, "Any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple." イエス様は言われました、「自分の持ち物を一切捨てないならば、あなたがたのだれ一人としてわたしの弟子ではありえない」と。We give up everything, and then Christ gives us everything we need. 私達がすべてを捨てますと、イエス様は私達に必要なすべてを下さいます。He gives us a cross. 即ち、私達に十字架を下さいます。It's no longer a symbol of shame, but a symbol of the glory of God, who loves us and died to forgive our sin. もう、恥のしるしではなくて、私達を愛して、私達の罪を赦すために死んで下さった神様の栄光のしるしになります。

　　Is it worthwhile being a Christian? クリスチャンになる価値があるでしょうか。Do you want to be a follower, a disciple of Christ? あなたは、キリストの弟子、即ち信者になりたいと思いますか。Adults who are baptized or kids in the confirmation class have to give a public answer to that, so we study the Bible so that we can be sure. 洗礼を受けて、公に信仰を告白する前に、その信仰を確信するために、私達は聖書を学びます。When we come to church and confess our sins, recite the Creed and receive communion, we are declaring our faith and saying that we do find it worthwhile. 又、教会に来る時、罪を告白する時、使徒信条を言う時、聖餐式を受ける時、私達は自分の信仰を宣言して、価値があると言います。Because in following Christ we have forgiveness of sins, eternal life and salvation. 何故ならば、イエス様に従う事によって、罪の赦しと永遠の命と救いがあるからです。
