1 + 1 + 1 = 1. 1 + 1 + 1 = 1. This equation represents the Holy Trinity. この数学の方式は聖なる三位一体を表します。 Mathematically it is incorrect. 数学的に言うと間違っています。 Logically it is illogical. 論理的に言うと非論理的です。 And yet, it faithfully represents how the New Testament reveals God: One God in Three Persons, the Holy Trinity. しかし、どのように新約聖書が神様を啓示しているかは正しいです：一つの神で３つのいかくで、三位一体です。 Since it seems mathematically and logically wrong and yet true at the same time, we call it a mystery. 数学的や論理的に間違っているように見ても正しい事ですので、それを「神秘」と呼びます。 It is something that we humans cannot explain, and yet we accept it as true because that is the way the Bible tells us. 私達人間が説明する事が出来ないものですが、それを正しいと認めるのは、聖書がそのように教えるからです。It is a matter of faith.　これは信仰の事です。

There are a number of mysteries in the Bible. 聖書の中には幾つかの神秘があります。 One of the biggest mysteries is that Jesus died and then on the third day rose again. 一番大きい神秘の一つとは、イエス様が死んで３日目に甦られた事です。 This is medically impossible, it is a mystery. 医学的に言うと不可能で、神秘です。 We cannot explain how God did it, but through faith we accept it as true. どのように神様がそれをなさったか説明する事が出来ませんが、信仰によってそれが真理であると受け入れます。 An even bigger mystery is that death of Jesus is a sacrifice that forgives our sin. それより大きい神秘とは、イエス様の死は、私達の罪を赦す犠牲です。 We cannot see it with our eyes, we cannot feel it. 自分の目で見えないし、感じる事が出来ません。 How does it work? どのようにするか分かりません。 It is a miracle, it is a mystery. 奇跡です、神秘です。 How in the Holy Communion can Jesus be really present in the bread and wine as his holy Body and Blood? 又、どうしてイエス様が聖餐式のパンと葡萄酒の中で、御自分の聖なる体と血として、臨在する事が出来るでしょうか。 It is because he said "this is my body which is given for you…this cup is the new covenant in my blood which is shed for you." (Luke 22:19-20). それはイエス様が言われたからです。「これは、あなたがたのために与えられる私の体である。。。。。この杯は、あなたがたのために流される、私の血による新しい契約である」(ルカ22:19-20) 。 That covenant is the promise of salvation. その契約とは、救いの約束です。However, one thing that is not a mystery any longer is the depth of God�s love.　とにかく、もう神秘ではない事の一つとは、神様の愛の深さです。

There are many mysteries in this world. 世の中には多くの神秘のようなものがあります。 Historical, archeological, medical, social, psychological, philosophical, theological…歴史学、、医学、社会学、心理学、哲学、神学。 God has given humans a mind that is curious, a mind that tries to solve those mysteries. 神様は人間に与えた頭は、によって、その神秘を解決したいと思います。 And so, when a scientist finds a cure to a disease, it is doing God-given work: it is loving the neighbor. それで、科学者は病気の癒す方法を見つけたら、その人は神様から与えられた仕事をしています。隣人を愛する事です。But sometimes researchers run into a barrier and they can go no further. しかし、壁にぶつかるリーサーチの時があり、もう進む事が出来ません。 The mystery cannot be solved without a bigger telescope or faster computer or because of the lack of records from the past. その神秘を解決する為に、より大きい望遠鏡やより速いコンピューターが必要で、又、昔の記録がもうないので進めません。 But even if we do not know all the reasons, we can enjoy God�s creation. しかし、すべての物を理解出来なくても、私達は神様の創造を楽しむ事が出来ます。 We can rejoice in the wonders of nature, we can be thankful for electricity and air conditioning, we can keep in contact with our loved ones with modern technology.　 自然の神秘（しんぴ）を喜び、電気とエアコンの為に感謝して、現代的なで友達や家族とコンタクトを持つ事が出来ます。

When theologians and laymen study the Bible, which is the only reliable source of knowledge about God, sometimes we run into a barrier because God has not revealed all of infinity to us. 教会の神学者達とすべての信者達は聖書を勉強します。聖書は神様についての知識の唯一の信頼する事が出来る源です。しかし、ぶつかる壁は、神様は私達人間にすべての事を啓示しないからです。 Often when we Christians pray and look for answers in our life, we find that God has not revealed everything to us. 私達クリスチャンが祈る時や自分の人生の意味を探す時、神様は私達にすべてを表わして下さらないと分かります。 It can be frustrating. いらいらする時があります。 Living by faith in the midst of mysteries can either be scary or it can be freeing, because we know that God knows everything and will take care of us.神秘のただ中に信仰によって生きる事は、他方は怖いですが、他方は自由を与えます。何故ならば、神様がすべてを知り、神様は私達を大事にする事が分かるからです。

I recently finished reading again the Old Testament Book of Job. 最近、再び旧約聖書のヨブ記を読み終わりました。 In the book, Job and his three friends debate about how God deals with humans, punishing or rewarding them. その書物の中で、ヨブと３人の友達が、どのように神様が人間を祝福するか罰するかについて論じ合います。 They cannot decide what is right. 何が正しいか彼等は決める事が出来ません。 Finally God says, 38:4, "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?" 最後に神様は言われます。「私が大地を据えたとき／お前はどこにいたのか」（38:4）。 In other words, have faith and trust God for everything. 即ち、信仰を持ってすべてのものの為に神様を信頼する事です。 Humans can never fully understand the mysteries of God. 人間は決して神様の神秘を理解する事が出来ません。 However, God has given humans the wisdom to see creation and thank God for it, to see salvation and have faith to believe it, to see their fellow neighbor and respond in love. しかし、それなのに、神様は人間に知恵を下さいます。創造を見て神様に感謝します。救いを見て信仰によってそれを信じます、隣人を見て愛の業で答えます。

My point today is that 1 + 1 + 1 = 1 is not a stumbling block to faith, but like a starting block that Olympic tract event runners use to get a good foot hold for a fast start, for the exciting race in faith. 今日私が言いたいと思うポイントは、1 + 1 + 1 = 1 が信仰のつまずきの岩ではなくて、オリンピックの陸上選手がレースに良いスタートが出来るように足元に使うスターチング　ブロックと言う物のようです。即ち、信仰のレースの出発の為にです。 It starts with Baptism in the Name of the Triune God. 三位一体の神様の御名による洗礼によって始めます。 It is a mystery that Baptism can wash away our sins, not just once, but daily as we pray to God. 洗礼は私達の罪を洗い流し、洗って、その時一回だけでなく、毎日神様に祈るたびごとに私達の罪を赦す神秘です。 Our worship service starts by calling on the Holy Name as we remember our Baptism and remember that we are children of this Holy God. 私達の礼拝の最初に、その聖なる名前を呼び掛けて、私達は自分の洗礼を覚えて、自分がその聖なる神様の子供であると覚えます。 The Trinitarian benediction tells us that as we leave church, we leave as baptized and redeemed and precious children of God. 礼拝の最後に、三位一体の祝福は、私達が礼拝堂を出る時、洗礼を授けられ、贖われた、愛された神様の子供達として出る事を思い起こします。 In other words, we do not explain the mystery, we live it. 言い換えますと、私達は神秘を説明する事よりも、その神秘によって生きる事です。 It is a mystery of God�s love that he would choose sinners like us to be in his family. 神様の愛の神秘で、御自分の家族の為に私達のような罪人を含む事です。 It is a mystery why God sent His Only Son Jesus to die for us and to give eternal life to all who believe. どうして神様は御自分の一人子を私達の為に死ぬ為にこの世に送って、信じるすべての人に永遠の命を下るかは神秘です。 In other words, we do not explain the mystery, we live it. しかし、私達は神秘を説明する事よりも、その神秘によって生きる事です。
