In The Upper Room
２階の部屋でMay 4, 2008, Seventh Sunday of Easter
Our church chapel is on the second floor of this building.
私達の教会の礼拝堂は、この建物の２階です。 A lot of churches in Japan are built this way. 日本中の多くの教会はこのように建てられています。 It makes a lot of sense where property is small and expensive. 土地が狭くて高いので、これは良い方法でしょう。 In a lot of churches, the first floor is the fellowship hall, like our church. 多くの教会は、私達の教会と同じように、１階は交わりのホールです。 Or the first floor might be classrooms or a kindergarten. 又、教室や幼稚園の場合もあります。 Actually a lot of churches in the USA are similar, except they have a full basement, but in Japan, basements are quite rare. 実は、アメリカの多くの教会が似ていますが、１階は地下室になっている場合が多いです。日本では、地下室はとっても珍しいです。Another reason I like a chapel on the second floor is because the very first church was built that way.
２階に礼拝堂を置くのが好きな理由のもう一つは、最初の教会がそうだったからです。 In the book of Acts, the disciples met in an upper room. 使徒行伝で、弟子達は２階の部屋で集まりました。 The Last Supper was also held in an upper room, perhaps the same room. 最後の晩餐も、２階の広間で行なわれていました。同じ部屋かも知りません。 So, when I think of our chapel on the upper floor, I think of that room where Jesus and his disciples were: ですから、私達の教会の礼拝堂が２階だと思う時、思い起こさせるのは、イエス様と弟子達が集まった部屋です： before the passion, after the resurrection, after the ascension, and perhaps on Pentecost, too. 苦しみを受ける前の晩、復活の後、昇天の後、そして、もしかしたら、ペンテコステの時です。 We too gather to be with our Lord and to be with other Christians. 私達も、主と集まり、ほかのキリスト信者達と共に集まります。What shall we do in the upper room chapel, or in any chapel?
この２階の礼拝堂、又、どこの礼拝堂でしても、そこに行く時、何をしましょうか。 Just as the disciples and Jesus. それは、弟子達やイエス様と同じです。 We pray. 即ち、祈ります。 Acts 1:14 says, “They all joined together constantly in prayer.” 使徒１:１４によりますと、「心を合わせて熱心に祈っていた」のです。 At the Last Supper, Jesus prayed for the disciples, he prayed especially that they might all be one (John 17:11): 最後の晩餐の時、イエス様は弟子達の為に祈りました、特に彼らが一つとなるために祈りました： one in faith, one in love, one in hope, one in purpose, one in mission, one in union with God. 信仰に一つ、愛に一つ、希望に一つ、目的に一つ、宣教の働きに一つ、神様と一つです。 This is the constant prayer of the church today, too. これは、現在の教会の絶えない祈りでもあります。Today there is confirmation.
今日、堅信式があります。 After studying the catechism book, we celebrate that we are one in faith, one in understanding of the faith, and one in our desire to for salvation in Jesus Christ. 小教理問答書を学んで、お祝いするのは、私達は信仰によって一つであり、信仰の理解も一つであり、又、イエス･キリストによる救いの希望も一つである事をあらわします。But the church does not seem to be “one.”
しかし、教会は「一つ」ではないみたいです。 There are over 1000 Christian denominations. 今日のキリスト教会の宗派は、一千以上あります。 The protestant church is constantly protesting each other and making new denominations. 特に、プロテスタント教会の中には、いろいろの喧嘩があって、新しい宗派があります。Even our own Lutheran church is splintered by many things, from trivial things like what sort of music is best to very serious things like the understanding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. 私達のルーテル教会も、かなり分裂しています。分裂の原因の一つの例えば、音楽の好き嫌いから、とっても大切なもの、例えば、イエス･キリストの福音の理解まで分裂しています。 But can we be one? 私達は本当に一つになる事が出来るでしょうか。 The fragmentation of the Church of God is the greatest of all scandals in the church. 教会の中の一番大きなスキャンダルとは、この教会の分裂です。 Can there be true ecumenical union in Christ? キリストによる本当の一致（いっち）が可能でしょうか。Each one of us is a sinner.
私達、一人一人は罪人です。 Sin pulls us away from God. 罪は、私達を神様から引き離します。The devil tries to split us off and away from God and away from the community of believers. 悪魔は、神様から、又、信者達の交わりから私達を離そうと思います。 The devil says that faith is a personal thing, just between you and God alone. 悪魔が言うのは、信仰は個人的なことである、あなたと神様だけの間のものだと言います。 But he is a liar. しかし、悪魔はうそつきです。 Jesus says that faith is a community. イエス様は信仰が交わりだと言われます。 First, we are made one with Jesus. 先ず、私達はイエス様と共に一つにされています。We are made one with the Triune God in our Baptism. 又、洗礼によって私達は三位一体の神様と一つにされています。 We are one when we gather in the chapel for prayer. この礼拝堂に集まって祈る時、私達は一つになります。 We pray for forgiveness of those sins that separates us. 私達を分裂させる罪への赦しの為に祈ります。 We pray that we will be one with Christ and one in Christ. キリストにあって一つになるように祈ります。 And in that way we are one with each other. このようにして、お互いに一つになります。 Together we are in mission to spread the Gospel of forgiveness, love, and eternal salvation. 一つになって、福音伝道の働きをします、即ち、赦しと愛と永遠の救いの福音です。We celebrate that oneness today. 今日、私達が一つである事をお祝いします。 There are prayers, hymns, the profession of faith, and the Lord’s Supper, which is often called the Holy Communion, which means, holy union, union and oneness with God and with the other saints around the altar. それで、祈り、讃美、信仰告白、又聖餐式があります；聖餐式は、聖なる交わりとも呼ばれています、即ち、神様と一つになり、祭壇の方に集まると皆は一つになります。And so we come together in our chapel of the upper room.
それで今日、私達はこの２階の礼拝堂に集まりました。 Some kids run up the steps, some adults hobble up with weak knees. 子供達が走りまわって、かけて階段を登れば、大人は弱いひざでゆっくり登ります。We come to call upon the name of the Lord in prayer, praise, and thanksgiving. 皆は、主の名前を呼んで、祈ったり、賛美したり、感謝します。Amen.
