We sing the Christmas carol “Silent Night,” but actually the first Christmas was a rather noisy night, I think. 「聖夜」（せいや）の歌のドイツ語の言葉とは、「静かな夜」と言います。 しかし、その最初のクリスマスはかなりやかましいと思います。 First we have Mary and Joseph knocking on doors, まず、マリアとヨセフがあちこちの宿のドアを叩きます。“Do you have a room for the night?” 「部屋が空いていますか」と。“No, sorry, we don’t.” 「いいえ、ありませんよ」と。 In the stable there were the sounds of the animals, 馬小屋の中には、動物の音がありました。 perhaps a cow going “moo” 牛は「モー」、or a sheep or goat going “baa” 羊と山羊は「バア、メイ」、or a horse going “neigh” 馬は「ひひいん」、or chickens clucking.鶏も「コケー」と言います。Then the sounds of childbirth. そして、赤ちゃんが生まれる時の音があり、Then the cry of the Baby Jesus taking his first breath in this world. この世に来られた赤ちゃんのイェス様の最初の息を吸う鳴き声です。

Then out in the pasture on the hills of Bethlehem, there is a new sound. そして、ベツレヘムの牧場の丘には、新しい音がありました。 The Angel of the Lord suddenly appears and the shepherds gasp is terror at the sight. 主の天使が突然に現れますと、羊飼い達は、恐れの為に泣きます。 “Do not be afraid! I have good news for you. Today your Savior, Christ the Lord, was born in David’s city.” 「恐れるな。わたしは、民全体に与えられる大きな喜びを告げる。 今日ダビデの町で、あなたがたのために救い主がお生まれになった。この方こそ主メシアである。」

And then the whole sky was filled with the choir of angels, そして、空全体が天使のコーラスでいっぱいになりました。“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those who have his good will!” 「いと高きところには栄光、神にあれ、地には平和、御心に適う人にあれ。」 Then there is the sound of the feet of the shepherds running into town, knocking on all the barn doors and stable doors, looking for the Christ Child, “Is there a baby here?” そして羊飼い達が町まで走って行った足音です。町のすべての馬小屋のドアを叩いて赤ちゃんのキリストを探しました。「ここに赤ちゃんがいますか」と。 And after they found the Baby, on the way back to their sheep they told everyone they met what they had seen, singing and praising God.　赤ちゃんを見つけた後に、羊の所に戻る、出会うすべての人に、自分達が見て聞いた事を話しました。神様を賛美して歌いました。

Our Christmases can get noisy, too. 私達のクリスマスもうるさくなる事があります。 Department store music, party noises, even our worship can get loud with songs like “Joy to the World.” デパートのBGM、楽しいパーティの音、私達の礼拝も大きい声で「もろびとこぞりて」と歌います。 It makes the season merry. それでこの季節が楽しくなります。 But sometimes the noise is bad. しかし、場合によって、うるさくて悪いです。 If people are completely distracted from the true meaning of Christmas, then we have a problem. クリスマスの本当の意味から目をそらしてしまいましたら、問題があります。 If the song of the angels is heard by the ears but not by the heart, then there is a problem. 心の中ではなくて、耳だけでその天使の歌が聞かれていましたら、問題があります。

Then in the midst of the noise there is silence. 又、違う沈黙もあります。 It is the silence when the Word of God is not spoken or not listened to or is ignored. それは、神のみ言葉が語られない時、聞かれていない時、無視された時です。 I would say that people choose to ignore the true Christian message, because they would rather that the Christ Child just stay in the manger and not go on to Jerusalem to preach the Gospel and preach against our sin and to die for our sin. 人がキリスト教の本当のメッセージを無視します。子供のキリストが飼い葉おけの中に、そのままいてほしいと思います。そうでしたら、 キリストは福音を述べ伝えないで、私達の罪を赦す為に十字架上で死なないでしょう。 People think it is better and easier to live in sin than to have sin forgiven. 罪を赦してもらうよりも、罪の中に生きる事の方が簡単で良いと思います。 The purpose of Jesus coming was to forgive sin, which is what the angel proclaimed.　 　クリスマスの天使が告げたのは、イェス様がこの世に来られる理由とは、罪を赦す為です。

And this time of year some people feel the silence of loneliness. 毎年この時期に、多くの人は寂しさとを感じます。 We think of loved ones who are not with us. 私達と共にいない愛する人のことを考えます。 Or perhaps there is the noise in our hearts from regrets and guilt and worries and pains and disease. 又、自分の心の中には、うるさいものがあるからでしょう：、罪、心配、痛み、病気。 Because of poverty, many people have hardly enough to eat to survive, let alone even thinking about a party at Christmas.　又、経済的に貧しくて毎日の食べ物が足りない人がいます。その人はクリスマスの御馳走について全然考えられません。

That is why now all people, rich or poor, healthy or sick, believers and unbelievers, must hear the good sound, the good news. ですから今こそ、すべての人々、金持ちと人、元気な人と病気の人、信者と未信者も、福音の良い知らせ、良い知らせの音を聞かなければなりません。 It was proclaimed by the angels. 天使はそれを告げました。 Christ is born! キリストがお生まれになりました。 And because this Child was laid in a manger, he experiences and understands everyone’s loneliness and pain. そして、この子供が飼い葉おけの中に寝かされたので、彼は皆さんの孤独や痛みを感じて理解します。 He understands the silence and the noise. 沈黙もうるさい音も分かります。 He is with us. 彼は私達と共にいます。 And that is why the Good News is a Good Sound to our ears and to our hearts. ですから、良い知らせは私達の耳と心の為に良い音です。 It gives hope. 希望を与えます。 It gives comfort. 慰めを与えます。 It gives assurance. 確信を与えます。 And the Good News gives us the reason to merry at Christmas. そして、福音はクリスマスの時期に楽しくなる理由を与えます。 It is because our Savior is born. 即ち、私達の救い主がお生まれになったからです。 Hark the Glad Sound! 素晴らしい賛美を聞きましょう。 Joy to the World!　もろびとに喜びがありますように！
